Thanks so much - wow, that is some information to digest.
Aditya - I did glance at the website whose link you have provided. Lots of info there. Much of that stuff and also what you guys think is basic stuff (midi keyboard, cakewalk etc) has all gone above my head, somewhere!!
I have to say, I am on the negative scale as far as anything techno is concerned. Of course, I am interested to learn. I need to do some research/learning on this myself.

I am posting the very basic of MIDI recording with a PC (I found this reply elsewhere):
------------------------
There are a couple of steps in the process. To record from your keyboard, first check to be sure it is MIDI capable. Check on the back to see if there are MIDI in and MIDI out ports. If so, then you are ready to go.
Next step is to connect the keyboard to the computer. You will need to connect this via MIDI. If your HP has a SoundBlaster compatible soundcard, then all you need is a MIDI cable connector. These are available at most computer stores. You connect the cable from the back of the soundcard to the MIDI keyboard. If you don't have a SoundCard, then you need to purchase a USB MIDI interface. There are lots of vendors that service music educators including SoundTree (www.soundtree.com), J.W. Pepper (www.jwpepper.com), Lentine's Music (www.lentine.com) and others.
Now you need to select recording software. For Windows, I recommend Cakewalk Home Studio. It can record multiple tracks of MIDI as well. Home Studio can also convert its files to WAV for burning to CD. The steps for this are in the HomeStudio manual.
Finally, you will also need a CD burner in your computer, which I assume you already have. After you have recorded your files and converted them to WAV, you can assemble the CD using your CD burner software.
It is a good idea to purchase your software and other gear from a company that provides tech support so you can get help along the way. The companies I mentioned above, as well as others, offer tech support which is a good thing.
I hope this information is helpful. Good luck!

Nice Panthuvarali piece. First, I liked the beat. One can decode the swaras and just sing the whole piece as a swarajathi, I'm sure that would sound good too.
Also, I wished you ended the piece with the portion that had a slower tempo i.e., 3.22 to 3.35 min (I liked this little portion) instead of the way you ended it. But it is only a personal preference, of course.
And by the way, I read quite a bit in that pcrecording website you suggested. Lovely site. I learnt about some of the terms you guys keep using here. I'm not sure though if I am ready for such a big step in recording my music. I will have to think.

Hi Aditya,
Exellent piece.I really enjoy that swara-korvai. The rhythm is perfectly matched with the main piece and like the strings also.

aditya - really nice. In a scale R, PanthuvaraLi has the combo of both Rmajor and R#minor coming up which gives a nice feeling of "urukkam" in a slow tempo and "bhayam" in higher tempo. BTW, do u do your bass all by yourself ? Seems like your work is very structured. The gentle introduction of the piano sound followed by violins...seems like one leads to another which is what call coherence in theme. Good good. DO more to keep us entertained :-)

Aditya,
I appreciate your expertise in handling your sound modules, your mixing abilities and particularly your deft handling of the bass. You sound very good, technically.
By the bye, I am reminded of a certain Ilayaraja song. (You can't say it is a feeling of 'deja-vu' for sure here :)).
I feel that you didnt develop the theme of the tune and it was like listening to a partially completed tune.

Aditya,
I didnt mean to be cryptical. I was just expressing my feelings as I was listening to it. I am glad you didnt take it negatively. We all learn from comments from fellow musicians and I am glad you take it in the right spirit.
I know that you have a classical background. I learned it too, but I am more comfortable with the Western scales and I feel at ease to visualize any music (except for Indian Classical music, of course :)) in those flexible scales (flexible in the sense of the kind of music we are trying to produce here). It is a different game, I feel, to look at a development in classical style in the scale of a raga and I wouldnt confuse it with the music we find here. I am not saying it is not a worthwhile attempt for a classical musician to try something out of his boundary. But then, when one makes an attempt at something which falls outside its conventional boundaries, it is better to look at for what it is.
I feel such expressions of music that fall outside the boundaries of Classical music have been well experimented by quite a few cine music directors (Salil Choudhury, MSV-TKR, the earlier MSV, Ilayaraja's folk songs...)and I try to look at any musical attempt with their standards. If I had made any comments here, it was based on that.
To come back to your piece, I felt like you didnt develop a musical structure based on a theme, and was rather carried away by the effects. The tune, I believe, has a structure that organically develops from its theme.
And Aditya, I am sure, you wont find me cryptic with this posting :)

Da Vinci: My vocabulary to bring the familiarity with some boundary doesn't mean that I am strict with such boundaries. It's my pleasure to be an introspective musician who's always looking for next step of improvement - I don't loose if I learn some more buddy:-)) Yes ofcourse there's a history, legacy and heritage as standard...
I honor them. Thanks again for your comments...
Whether you mean it or not, every musician must constantly improve...

Aditya, I liked this piece. I think there is a song in the same raagam in Nandhaa by Yuvan (?). Your recent trend of mixing drum/bass sounds and strings can quickly push you into the commercial arena (not that it is bad ).
BTW, can you work more on the strings.. like writing for different parts ? Actually, I am a fan of your strings usage.
