A.R. Rahman Stuns! Release date fixed?
- 30-12-2003
Ever since the audience heard AR Rehman's compositions in 'Kangalaal Kaidhu Sei', they have been eagerly awaiting the film's release
The year 2003 had been a fabulous one for AR Rehman. He has had three big hits this year- 'Boys', 'Yenakku 20 Unakku 18' and 'Kangalaal Kaidhu Sei'.
The film 'Kangalaal Kaidhu Sei' is a film wth a difference. After a long gap, Bharatiraaja is touching yet another favorite topic of his- Crime thriller.
The story is different, so is the music'- this was Bharatiraaja's compliment to AR Rehman. He also said that Rehman had composed music that suits the film's story and also appeals to the younger crowd.
Bharatiraaja launches two good-lookers in the film- Vaseekaran and Priyamani.
The film had been postponed because Bharatiraaja had got involved in 'Eeranilam'. NOw, this film is ready too and was first scheduled to be released for Pongal, but, Bharatiraaja decided to avoid unnecessary competiton in the Pongal crowd with newcomers and has therefore postponed his film's release to January 26th.

Kiran...
Just because the movie is set in urban mileau, don't go for such declarations,BR has already proved his mettle in handling movies like 'Tik tik tik' and 'Sigappu Rojakkal',did he lose his touch after that?

Rest are BS. Too much techno. Not pleasant. I think ARR is becoming lazy to do some real work.

Kiran,
I agree with your point. I share the same feeling.
ARR music is sweat and very good. But his approach is album centric not movie centric. He aims to sell maximum number of audio, compromising nativity.
For example in Taj Mahal, Tirupaachi Aruvallai song. You will hear, jingles like music in middle of the song. Alle Alle Ey Alle, something like that. It does not fit a village folk at all. But cool in album.
Another song from Muthu. Kuruvallile. Who other can do this purachi. Oru Northern Singer koopittu, Oru tamil Kalanda Malayala paddalai paada solli, Athukku western kalanda musicai pootu Atai oru Kannada kara nadigarai vaiasaikka sonnare. Jokes apart, this song again cool in album, but Rajini has to become comedian while acting for it.
ARR tried movie centric music in KM. I personally liked the songs, but album did not sell that well.
On the other hand IR's approach is otherway. He is fully movie centric. Whatever movie demands he gives and it may not appeal in audio in some cases.
Ex. Kaadalluku Mariyadai. There is a song Ayya Voodu. When I heard this song, I thought why IR is not leaving this trend. When I saw it in movie, it exactly fits the bill. Interestingly ARR does the hindi version of it. The song is Kevarae kevaa. The song is excellent in audio and more polished for Fisherman's to sing.
But ARR's success in audio sales, gives a parallel revenue to that of the actual movie itself. So the directors also started making nativity compromise.
I am not belittling either IR or ARR. I just shared the observation with Kiran and gave my explanation. That's all.

Anbe sivam, nice points there. But I feel it is upto the director to motivate an MD by giving him good situations to do music. For example, the "kathalankattu vazhi" and "manoothu madhayile" songs in kizhakku cheemayile are full of nativity and yet they were a huge hit audiowise. These songs fit the movie perfectly.
When it came to karuthamma, the songs were all of a totally new kind, folk mixed with western beats. It was a conscious decision made by Bharathiraja and ARR to do something new. Both of them acknowledged this in interviews. If you listen to the "Kaadu potta kaadu" the voices sound rustic, but the beats sound western. It is just the urge within ARR that makes him want to to do something new.
In the case of Muthu, the "kuluvalile" song was not supposed to be sung by Rajini. It was supposed to be sung by one of the dancers along with rajini.
True, IR may give songs with genuine nativity, but how long can you listen to the same beats again and again, with nothing new to enjoy. Once again, when you listen to IR songs, you like them instantly. That is because you have already heard them before and have already liked it. So when you hear a similar song, you like it instantly. But when it comes to ARR's songs, even the hardcore fans initally hate them. But the songs (almost) always grows after listening to it a few times. This is because, everytime ARR comes up with something new, something different, something audacious (like the "Yedoma...Yedomaathiri" song in KKS). When you have not heard something before, you cant like it instantly, it just takes some time, thats it.
Come to think of it, that is why ARR does not want to do tamil movies anymore. While IR is willing to do the same thing again and again in the name of nativity, ARR wants to free his shackles (the same situations over and over) and keep doing something new. If he wants, he can give n number of "Kulicha kuttalam"s, "Edhukku pondatti"s or "Jumbalaka"s. I am sure he does not want to be in the tamil industry for more than 25 years with around 800 movies to his name and still keep doing the same thing, all in the name of nativity.
He showed his intentions clearly by going for the private album "Vandemaataram". His prime reason:"I can create the music I want to create, there are no situations that constrain me like the introduction of hero/heroine, or a romantic duet, a hero teasing a heroine, or a pathos song, etc." He is the kind of artist who wants to constantly keep doing something new.
Even though, both are geniuses, I guess this is the difference between IR and ARR. If IR is happy doing that, fine... It is just that ARR does not want to do that. You do only what you want to do, not what people expect you to do.
