it is easy to count the flops if IR rather than talk about his hits.. we will be talking for ages then..
recently (about 6 years back!) there was a movie called 'Idhu Namma Bhoomi' - such a junk collection. Hard to believe that it is by IR.

Dear Raghavan,
I am a new comer to this site and would like to tell you that I have got some appreciable aquaintance with Raja's songs. In "Kilippechu Ketka Vaa" the hit song was "Sivagami Ninappinilae". It is a beautiful song with a rhythm so different from that of all the other regular songs.

According to me IR's songs can be categorized as follows:
1. Male Female, very melodious duets.
2. 99% Carnatic raga based songs.
3. Tamil Folk based songs.
4. Eastern based tunes with Western music treatment.
5. Tappanguthu songs.
6. Other miscellaneous songs.
The first 5 categories each probably had about 12% of the songs and the last category miscellaneous songs had the balance 40%
Also in general most of IR's movies had a nice mixture of songs in 2 or 3 of the above categories. Some people like me prefer the songs of the first 2 categories while there are others who prefer the other categories. Also depending upon one's tolerance with standards the grading of the music can fluctuate. I believe I have listened to atleast 75% IR's songs from Annakili to Aboorva Sagotharargal and I can listen to only 5% of his songs repeatedly. Also I can listen to only 1% of MSV's and I can count the songs I like by KVM, Shankar Ganesh, Ganagai Amaran, T. Rajendar etc. I like Chalapathi Rao's music. I am in the process of developing a taste for AR and Vidyasagar. By the way even though Deva has put some excellent hit songs I somehow feel that he does not have that much originality and I think he tries to adapt the tunes of both IR and AR.
I would love to hear from you if you agree/disagree with any of my above opinions.
Karthi Gopal

Dear Karthik Gopal,
I am not in full agreement with you on the classification of IR's songs. The songs in GURU donot fall under any category if we neglect the the last one - the miscellaneous. The song - "Thatharam Mozhi Amma " cannot be put under any of the groups you have specified and I have not heard a song like that from IR himself before. It was of a new breed. "Guru Charanam" seems to be both like a bhajan as well as a WC tune. This is because of the unconventional (I mean WC) usage of notes. It reads "S R2 G2 M1 P D2 N1 S". The "N1" in the swaras generally does not form a scale in the WC. Only God and IR know what he is trying to give us.
On the other hand, I accept your opinions on Deva with some reluctance. He too has had good tunes (hope original). In the film Kalki, there is one rendered by Chitra - "Porul Thedum Bhoomiyil". It is a good tune and I have not seen any similar tune before for him to copy. You may also hear to "Un Udattora Chivappay","Karuvelam Kaattukkulley", "thendralukku Theriyuma ", "Konja Naal Poru" and "Metti Metti Velli Metti". All are good tunes. You may enjoy them.
Regards

Digression:
A little while back, I was listening to the songs from 'Adhiradippadai,' a 1994 release. My impression was, Goodness, what a mediocre album! Not a single number I'd want to hear again! It makes 'Rajakumaran' look like a blue moon classic!
