Hi All,
I dont know anything about carnatic music but from various articles in the internet i could know which song was based oin which raaga.I found that 75% of my fav songs are based on "MOHANAM".For example geetham sangeetham, ninnukori varnam, nilavu thoongum neram, kanmaniye kathal enbathu, idhayam oru kovil etc etc...are all my top fav's..
So can everybody tell which raaga is their favourite and quote some songs...

My choice is Hindolam. And the song that is such a beautiful rendering of the raga is 'Dharisasam Kidaikkatha' from Alaigal Oyvadillai.

OISG, I see where you are coming from when you say that you find it hard to differentiate from Sudhadhanyasi and Hindolam. Here is a simple exercise you can practice to understand better:
Try playing the notes in the pattern shown:
1 3 4 3 5 4 5 1+
1= C or sa
3= F or ma
4= G or pa in Sudhadhanyasi
G# or da in Hindolam
5= A# or ni
Trust me, you will hear a difference. :-)
p.s., thanks for the link.

It is not just playing the keys.Your ears should get the raga when you listen.
My maths on music is same as that of yours but getting things right in the ear is what matters.
I shall get it soon.

Vanakkam,
I am a remixer, who wants to get into the next phase - try to create my own dance tracks. I want to get a good keyboard which I can use for multiple thigns (synthesizer, sequencer, looping, sampling, etc).
I briefly looked at the KORG TRITON. I am willing to invest some money into this. Can someone please help me? Please specify the models as well (Le vs workstation vs 61 key, etc)
nanRi,
Kapilan

Okay, my favorite raagas?? Here's the real story! My favorite is Aarabhi, on two accounts:
1> It's a lot of fun to work with, and
2> The name is COOL.
Other raagams with cool names:
Dhenuka
Shyamalaangi
Saalagam
Thaanarupi
Hindolam
Maand
Bilahari
Oh, there are so many...
[btw, Mythila = Vardhini, yes?]

REVIVAL
******
Alright, after extensive considerations, I feel I can now properly give my opinion.
What I said above is true. Aarabhi is one of my preferred ragas. It makes me feel energetic somehow. I especially love the song 'Sandhakkavigal Paadidum' in Metti. Also, 'Nattu Vatcha Rosa Chedi' in Aranmanai Kili seems to based on this raaga (at least the pallavi anyway).
Three Malayalam songs I know of in this raaga are 'Harichandana Murali' from Kannezhuthi Pottum Thottu, 'Dheem Thanana Thana' from Soothradharan and 'Mandhaara Poovente' from Njan Salperu Ramankutty.
I also mean it when I said Sudhasaveri is another one of my fave ragas. It is a fairly common raaga for devotional and karuna songs. I love hearing this raaga or Aarabhi when mooning over a dream girl (with my pants up!!). Some of the best songs in this raaga include 'Rettai Kiligal Andraadum Pesum' in Ore Oru Graamathile,
'Sithagathi Pookkale' in Rajakumaran, the all-time classic 'Kaathal Mayakkam' in Puthumai Pen, 'Thaamthaa Theemthaa' in Pagalil Oru Iravu (may also be considered Mohanam), 'Unakkaagave Naan' in Rasigan Oru Rasigai, and 'Sugam Sugame' in Naan Potta Savaal. There are also some songs with partial usage of this raga, such as 'Raasave Unnai Naan Ennaithaan' in Thanikkaattu Raja, 'Nadu Saamathile' in Mrs. Pazhanisaami and 'Ponnaaram Poovaaram' in Pagalil Oru Iravu. In the realm of nonfilm devotional songs, we have 'Kudasa Sri' in PS' 'Durga Laxmi Saraswati', 'Annaamalai Unnai' in SPB's 'Sivamalai', and 'Pazhamuthir Cholaithane' in some KJY album, just as a few examples. In Malayalam, I like 'Kudamurai Kalyaanam' by Ouseppachan in Chilambu, 'Thaaraattu Paadidum' in Kakakum Poochakkum Kalyaanam, 'Paal Nilavilum' in the same film, 'Dheepam Kayyil' in Neelakadambu, 'Poo Veno Poo Veno' in Desadanakili Karaiyilla, and 'Pularikal Sandhyakal' by the legendary G Devarajan in Neeyethra Dhanya.
Finally, we come to my third favorite raagam, Chakravagam. I like it because I feel it has an interesting swing to it, which somehow or other makes for a sobering feeling. Some of my favorite songs in this raga include 'Chalakku Chalakku Selai' in Chembaruthi, 'Iniya Malargal Malarum Ho' in Poonthottam, and 'Munnooru Naal Sumanthu' in some film whose name I know not, sung by SPB. I think the best Chakravagam I've heard yet is in SPB's devotional album Sivamalai, in the song 'Malai Valam Seyya Vaarunga.' Aww, that song is so good!
Hope you guys will contribute some more. I would like to hear opinions from people like Vel, Mythila, vijay or the likes. :-)) Ciao.

Wait! Not done quite yet. I thought of a fourth raga I really like; Pahadi. I like it because it has a sentimental and sweet spin to it, and can be used for romance and pathos. Examples of Pahadi include 'Ninaithathu Yaaro' in Paattuku Oru Thalaivan, 'Ore Naal Unnai Naan' in Ilamai Oonjalaadugirathu, 'Edhedho Ennam Valarthen' in Punnagai Mannan, 'Raasaave Onnai Nambi' in Muthal Mariyaathi, 'Vaan Nilaa Thenilaa' in Kavithai Paadum Alaigal, 'Enge En Jeevane' in Uyarntha Ullam, 'Seer Kondu Vaa' in Naan Paadum Paadal, 'Intha Maan Unthan Sontha Maan' in Karagattakaran and 'Vaigai Nathiyoram' in Rickshaw Mama. There is also a very sweet devotional song in Pahadi raagam sung by the great KJY, 'Thiruchendurin Senthil Murugaa.'
Okay. I'm really done now.

i need to learn about raga's. But, I find that mostly music of Jewish and Indian composers seem like they are coming from way back when. very very nostalgic of a deeper past....
especially, Woody Allen' movies features some tunes composed by Jewish composers..... it is amazing...
From India, many composers have brought that feel, especially MK Arjunan and Ummer in Malayalam are at unbeatable (maaney in Picnic, raaga dheepam) also Devarajan, Salil Choudry, Ravindra Jain... that pastoral ancient timeless feeling .......
in Tamil, Naidu, GR, TRM sung songs have really deep and classical tunes...
MSV, IR and S-G have given lots, I am trying to know the timeless and most profound raagas as heard in these songs:
Kanchi Pattuduthi
Aagaya Panthaliley
Nee Ennan Sonaalum
Kallellam Manicka
Paattum Naaney
In my musical understanding, these ragas have no peer elsewhere outside Indian psyche..... I am pretty sure....
One S_G song that blows me away is Paniyum Naaney Malarum....
Many IR songs also, particulary Enakkaga Kkathiru just bewilders me on the usage of extraordinary raagas:
O Maya
Pani Mazhai Vizhum
eg: malargaliley aradhanai - karumbu vil
adi penney, senthazhampoovil - mullum malarum
This is a deep topic worthy of research on antiquity and origins of cultural maturity, brought up in another thread ;-----))))))
