Hi All,
I dont know anything about carnatic music but from various articles in the internet i could know which song was based oin which raaga.I found that 75% of my fav songs are based on "MOHANAM".For example geetham sangeetham, ninnukori varnam, nilavu thoongum neram, kanmaniye kathal enbathu, idhayam oru kovil etc etc...are all my top fav's..

was watching thiruvilayadal this morning. two golden voices (actually 3, illa 4..) reminded me of how they have enriched TFM. KB Sundarambal, TR Mahalingam, Balamuralikrishna, Sirkazhi...what a landmark this movie was for TFM.

Aabheri is my favourite raga. I believe it was once believed in tfm that this raga is a lucky raga and melodies like Vaarai nee Vaarai, Anbe en aaramudh vaarai, Sarasa mohana, Singara velane deva, proves it. I do not know why such ragas are not being used by music directors now.

Any instances of the usage of raga SRI in TFM?
This raga hasn't been explored well in classical music as well. 'EntarO mahAnu Bhavulu' and a popular varNam being the only reference point for many.
Madhyamavathi, a raga that comes pretty close to Sri has been used extensively in TFM.
To me, the song from Imayam, 'Gangai Yamunai Ingu thAn Sangamam' sounds like Sri.
Any opinion?

My fave would be Charukesi and Simmendra Madhyamam. But I do feel that Sivaranjani is the oft used raga in Indian films. Someone had mentioned in Nayandi Darbar that Mayamalava Gowlai is the most used raaga in songs from middle east!
Back to my raagas, IR's 'aananda raagam' from Panneer pushpangal is my fave for simmendra madhyamam. IR has scores of songs for charukesi as everybody has already mentioned. But his song 'chakara katti' from Ulley velia is my personal fave! Lovely use of chaarukesi!
Has IR done any film songs in raaga revathy?

Hindolam...mmm...
some of beautiful songs in TFM history have come out of this raaga...
i quote them for S.L. Ramakrishnan's(Classical Illayaraaja) mouth:
1) Sreedevi en vazhvil
2) Dharisanam kidaikaadha
3) om namachivaaya
4) Naanaga naan
5) pothi vacha malligai mottu
6) Unnal mudiyum thambi thambi
7) naan thedum sevvandhi poovidhu
8) Kannae unai thedugiren vaa
9) o janani en suram nee
Could any of you list Songs in Hindolam by MSV(-TKR), GR, KVM, ARR, Deva(!)

IR also used simmendra madhyamam in a classic song from Oruvar Vazhum Alayam, Nee pournami endrum en nenjile.
as for revathy, i have been told that sangeetha jadhi mullai from Kadhal oviyam is in revathy. pundits, pls clarify.

cram,
'Sangeeta JAthi Mullai' is indeed Revathy.
I thought "Amma Azhage Ulagin oLiyE' from the same film, 'Kadhal Oviyam' was also set to Revathy. Only later did I realize that it has no 'Ni1', but a 'Dha1'. (refer to the ending of Sangeetam En JeevanE' in 'Dha1'). That should make it raga MALAHARI.
Remember the popular Geetams in Malahari, 'LambOdhara Lagu Migara' and 'Paduma NAbhA Parama PurushA' (the former also featured in the sound track of AlaigaL Oyvatyhillai' when actress Radha learns music).
The other instance of Revathy is in the famous Visu comedy, 'MaNal KayiRu'. It had a song, 'Mandira Punnagai Minnidum Menakai'. MD: M. S. Vishwanathan.

Recently i had the great oppurtuniy to listen to the song "Sangathil(Santhathil??) paadatha kavithai Angathil yaar thanthathu" from Auto Raja for the first time in Sun TV(Vijayakanth hits)..
Great song..very different from other songs..Can anyone please say which Raagam it is based??
But the picturisation was worst...I loved this song more than the malayalam version "Thumbi vaa" by S.Janaki..

Madhyamavathi is a ragam which leaves the audience in a peaceful state of mind. Muscians do not sing further after they complete a mangalam in Madhyamavathi.
Neelambari, similarly puts the listener , into a peaceful, sleeping mood. Make your mind at ease.
Two great ragas, indeed.

peeps, Interesting thread! Here's my take. I have a few favorite RAAGAs, and they are, in random order (with 3 or 4 or so examples):
1. Hindolam
- Pongiyathe Kaathal Vellum (Manukkul Vairam)
- Ammammammaa (Thaalaattu Paadavaa)
- Sri Devi En Vaazhvil (Ilamai Kolam)
- Ennathil Etho Sillendruthu (Kallukkul Eeram)
- Vantha Naal Murai (Paava Manippu)
- Unnal Mudiyum Thambi (UMT)
2. Sudhasaveri
- Aasai Kiliye (Thambikku Endha Ooru)
- Innarul Tharum (Athma)
- Malargalil Aadum (Kalyanaraman)
- Kaathal Mayakkam (Pudhumai Penn)
- Unakkaagave (Rasigan Oru Rasigai)
- Kalakalakam Maniyosai (Eeramaana Rojaave)
3. Panthuvarali
4. Mohanam
-- according to me, these raagas has the greatest scope for sweet flavor in songs.

IR has tuned a wonderful Revathi raaga song in film 'Oru Odai Nadiyagiradu' song 'Kanavu onru thonude
athai yaarodu solla' sung by SJ.It is a rare gem.
IMO 'Vizhiyil vizhundu idayam nuzhaindu' song from Alaigal Oyevathillai is also from Hindolam/ Sudhadhanyasi.
Similarly, 'Metti oli kaatrodu' from film Metti should also be either Hindolam/Sudhadhanyasi.
Experts please clarify

Sorry. When i tried playing 'Aasai Kiliye' on my electronic keyboard, I couldn't find out where the notes E and B came in. From what I understand, the Aarabhi raagam is a compound raaga having **ascent=Sudhasaveri, descent=Shankarabharanam**.
HAving an electronic keyboard, or any musical instrument for that matter can be a a very useful tool in figuring out raaga's of particular songs. For instance, through experimenting with different raagas on the keyboard, I found the following songs to be in the following raagas:
Ennathil Etho (Kallukkul Eeram)- Hindolam
Kalakalakum Maniyosai (Eeramaana Rojaave)- Sudhasaveri
Sri Raamane (Kangalin Vaarthaigal)- Sudhadhanyasi
Panjuppola Nenju (Punniyavathi)- Sudhasaveri
etc.
Being a MD-in-training, I always want to learn new melodic scales. What notes are in the Sri raagam? Huseni? Varali? Peelu? I would be very happy if someone would pl. reply.

It sounds Aarabi only and your Suddhsaver/Sankarbaranm theory is right.Cinema usage permits an occasional Ni(B)(to indicate Aarabi pattern ) and an occasional Ga(E) to show signs of Chama too.(Hope your basic starts with Universal C)
To understand the difference play the following songs to get the ragam for "aasaikiliye" right.
Kovil mani oosai -Kizhake pogum rail-SD
Kannile Kudiyirunth - Imayam-Chama
Kadhal Mayakkam -Pudhumai penn -This too might get into Aarabhi.Suddha saveri confusion.
Aadiyile perukkeduthu aadi varum kaveri
I dont suggest "Erikarayin mele"(Mudhalali) /Mounathil (noolveli)since you might use Keyboards without "Pitch bender".I have the facility but not comfortable using it.
I suggest a site something like "Bagavdasampradaya" which lists all the rags with their aarohanam and avarohanam.
Sri( 22 Karahrapriya Janyam),Varali(39) must be certinly availble as we have standard carnatic music songs in these ragas like "Entharo".Peelu being the hindustani version may not find a place.
Keyboard usage has really made me too understand music better. But Suddhadhanyasi/Hindolam confusions have always occured initially with older model Keyboards.
Sri Ragam usage i suggest "Deviyar iruvar muruganukku" from Kalaikoil.
