Hi All,
I dont know anything about carnatic music but from various articles in the internet i could know which song was based oin which raaga.I found that 75% of my fav songs are based on "MOHANAM".For example geetham sangeetham, ninnukori varnam, nilavu thoongum neram, kanmaniye kathal enbathu, idhayam oru kovil etc etc...are all my top fav's..
So can everybody tell which raaga is their favourite and quote some songs...

CRAM,
You are most welcome. I hope I was able to communicate the concept.
RV, 'Amudhe Tamizhe' from 'Kovil PuRa' is not BOWLI, but a raga called 'Rasika Ranjani'. This beautiful morning raga has rarely been used in Krithis.
IR, of course has used it in 3 occasions. The other two songs being,
'NeelakkuyilE UnnOdu NAn PaNpAduvEn' ('film: 'Magudi') and
recently in 'Bharati' (IMO, the best song of the film), 'Edhilum Ingu IruppAn Avan YAro'
KeeravANi is one of my fav. ragas in TFM and there are many gems from IR's repertoire like
1. 'Kaatril Endhan Geetam' (Johnny)
2. 'Unnai NAn ARivEn' (Guna)
3. 'EnnuLLE EnnuLLE' (VaLLi)
4. 'Thanga Changili' & 'BhoopALam Isaikkum' (Thooral Ninnu POchu)
5. 'MalargaLile Aaradhanai' (Karumbu Vil)
6. 'POvOmA OorgOlam' (Chinna Thambi)
7. 'KeeraVaNi IravilE KanavilE' (PAdum ParavaigaL)
8. 'MalayOram Veesum Kaathu' (PAdu NilAvE)
9. 'Oh PApA LAli' (Idhayathai ThirudAthe)
10. 'NenjukkuLLE InnArennu' (POnnuMaNi)
11. 'Nee ThAna Nee ThAna' (ThAlAttu pAdava)
12. 'SuththAde Bhoomi ThAyE Nil' (NilavE Mugam Kaattu)

peeps,
if my memory is correct, the todi based (not pure todi) song is gangai karai mannanadi from varusham 16. I read it in 'Classical Illaiyaraaja' by SLRaamkrishnan's article. He says in pallavi and charanam the thodi is heard but in the interlude music the raagam degenerates to the lighter sindhu-bhairavi or something like that.

there was one pure todi song in the film called Thodi Raagam by kunnakudi vaidhyanaathan. Carnatic vocalist T.N.Seshagopalan was the hero. In that film one song Thodiyil paadugindraen Odi nee varuvaai muruha in a kutchery style. That song was set in Thodi Raagam (courtesy 'Classical Illaiyaraaja' by SLRaamkrishnan's article)

sriranjani, another beautiful ragam (well, which one isn't?). IR gave a great song in this ragam - naadham ezhundhadhadi from gopura vasalile.
Neels,
we ought to discuss more ragams, like charukesi and arabhi, and how they have been handled by our composers.

Thanks a lot for your educative mails.
* In one of the earlier films of IR (Mudhal Iravu), IR used Mayamalava Gowlai in Manjal Nilavukku, with a WCM orchestration.
* Charukesi in Raghavendrar film song - ??
* Arabhi in Erikkarai mele poravale, Mannavane Mannavane (Thandhuvitten ennai) and Madhurai vazhum Meenakshi (Pudhupatti Ponnuthayee) are nice ones.

Vedam Nee Inya nadam nee is Gowli and not thodi
classical song Pranamayaham Gowri Sudham is set to Gowli u can make a connection between these two songs there no relation of thodi whatsoever in Vedam nee song.
IR has composed a song 'Gangakarai Mannadi'
in Varusham 16 based on thodi set to mishra chapu thalam

My first time here. And what a bloody brilliant forum! Born and educated in Mas. settled in Delhi, from a Carnatic household, and currently totally out of touch.
What a way to get back into talking Carnatic!
Need some answers pls :
What ragam is Thenral vandu theendum pothu "Avataaram"?
And Yenna chatham inda neram from "Punnagai Mannan"?
And pls can someone give me more examples in this ragam both from TFM and HFM(pls. I'm married to a Punjabi who incidentally loves IR!)
Many thanx

great to find someone who still remembers those greats. how many singers can you find today who can hold you in thrall with just their voice? not many, and none in the class of MKT or TRM.
talking of TRM, he's most famous for senthamizh thenmozhiyal (though i don't like it as much now as i did when i first heard it). but some of his less-famous songs are what appeal to me.
eg: naanandri yaar varuvaar

Mine is NALINAKANTHI - This features in the BGM of the movie Kandukonden Kandukonden and also as part of the title song, which has Kadhanakuthuhalam and shades of Maand mixed with it.
IR did the best Nalinakanthi, in my book - this being 'ENDHAN NENJIL NEE PAADUM THENDRAL NEETHAANA'.
It is quite a Rare Ragam , with only a few Krithis - nowadays, people are writing Varnams, Thillanas, e.t.c. in it. The famous Krithi in it is 'MANAVYALAKIN CHARA' by Thyagaraja. Another one is 'Nee paadhame gathi Nalinakanthi Madhi' by GNB

Nandu narasimhan,
You may find the following link useful. It is a good reference database for RAGA BASED FILM SONGS:
http://asp.newtfmpage.com/list.asp
Please note the last column in the table that shows whether a record has been confirmed yet by experts.
UV,
'AdAtha manamum uNdO' by the Late M. L. Vasanthakumari is set to 'LatAngi' raga (notes similar to KalyaNi, the difference is: Dha2 of KalyaNi is replaced by Dha1.) The above raga has recently been used in the song, 'Enge Enathu Kavitai' in KKKK (Music: ARR) in the charanams ('MARan Ambugalin..)' before raga Sindhu Bhairavi takes over.
cram,
'Vasanta mullai pole vandhu' (film: SArangadhAra) is a classic example of Charukesi.
It is also used in the Ragamalika song, 'Pudhiya paRavai Siragai adikka thudkkirathe' (film: Andha Oru Nimidam; Music: IR). Refer to the lines, 'Chozhakkuyil pAdugayil Cholaik Kuyil Oyvedukkum, mellinangaL pAdu kaNNe, vallinangal vai valikkum'. It's pure Charukesi.
Other instances of Charukesi are:
'Thoodu Selvaharadi, Urigidum Podhu Seivathennadi' from 'SingAravelan . Music : IR)
'ThoongAtha KaNNindu Ondru' (one of my favorite oldies, Film: Kunkumam(I think) MD: Viswanathan & Ramamurthy) is a good example of Charukesi used in a very light way.
Arabhi hasn't been used very much in films. As mentioned in this thread, 2 such instances are 'Erikkarayin Mele' (though some say it is DevagandhAri) and 'Asai KiLiye arakkilO puLiye' (film: Tambikku Entha Ooru). There may be some real old numbers set to this raga, but I am not ware of them.
Arabhi has been used in the Tamil dubbed version of the Telugu hit, 'Seeta RAmaiyyagaru Manavarulu' (I think the Tamil name is 'VandhAL Mahalakshmiye'). There is a song that follows the Tyagaraja Pancharatna krithi, 'SAthinjane O ManasA).
