Agnoticism is based on a Sampoorna Melakartha ragam #8 - "HanumaThodi"...Equal Temperament tuning system might not allow us to completely match it with the carnatic scale...Here are the western notes C C# D# F G G# A# C
"This might have shades of Sindhubhairavi..."

Hello all,
good to be back here at the forum.....one of my new compostions this one's got a lead sax and jazzy feel(?) to it!
http://www.geocities.com/dbhowman/carnaticJazz.mp3
Alternatively you could go to mp3.com to hear a version of the same song without my voice in it.

ADITYA,
I had a chance to listen to one of your old compostions (months old probably) rythmicselfrealization. Thats a very nice piece. I should say impressive. I really liked that song! Excellent job on that song....

Hi Jay,
Thanks for the link. It was very useful. I will settle for a good sound card which I can use externally.
I have one more question. I cannot get 'multipad' sounds (I use Yamaha PSR 540) into cakewalk or even my onboard sequencer. Is there a way to get those sounds recorded in my songs ? I think I could get them as .wav files, but I would like to know how you guys handle it.
Thank You.

Da Vinci,
Check out www.edirol.com, they have USB devices, which help you record and output digital audio. I suggested, one of these - DA-3D, I think, which Naveen (who is a piano virtuaso here) bought and is quite happy with it.
You could get some software synthesizers to get the sounds you want. Also, there are sound samples available for Cakewalk.
BTW, I am not into music composing, just listening, I was interested in the USB devices, so that I can get good sound out of my computer. Also, s/w synth can play MIDI files and there tons of MIDI of western classical music. For eg, edirol.com has a s/w synth HQ-OR Orchestral, with this, I dont think I need to buy any classical music anymore, fantastic sound. I can download the MIDI files and not only will I have good sound, I can even have control over the sound/mixing etc, which I cannot with a CD.

hello all,
one of my friends here in D.C challenged me to compose and play a carnatic raga in his Steinway Grand Piano. I chose Hamsadhwani. It turned out really well. He really liked it!
I added the cello part later in the recording session. I have uploaded the file as an mp3. here's the link...lemme know your comments

Divakar:
Beautiful Hamsadhwani with an interesting accidental note! I liked this composition and also the performance on Piano....
Phrase "Pa Da Sa Da Pa" with Dhaivatham as an accidental note at 1:47 makes it interesting even though from purist stand point it's not hamsadhwani note...From western point of view, it shouldn't matter...
Good Job! I wish to see you some more good work on Piano and Guitar.
I really like this composition and your performance. I would like to seek some more from you for which you can choose not to oblige...Perfectly fine as I understand how busy each of us are otherwise - How about in the middle you shift the root note of this scale to it's perfect 5 and get another beautiful scale "Nagaswarali" - "Sa Ga Ma Pa Da Sa"...and then further improvise this composition with some more melody.
Regards,
Aditya

How coincidental! - one of my friends (he has been playing the piano for the past 15+ years) and myself were randomly jamming and we took up hamsadhwani for exploration. He played the piano, and improvised on HD. After a while we decided to move to another ragam. And guess what he comes up with - nAgasvarAvaLi!
It is indeed a beautiful ragam, SankarAbharaNam janyam, I think.

Aditya,
Thanks for the comments and suggestions....
I can compose another piece that touches both hamsadhwani and its perfect fifth transformation(if you will) which gives Nagasvaravali.....
BTW nAgasvarAvaLi is a HariKAmboji Janya.
I am gonna try this on my piano. Aditya will let you know once I am done with this and uploaded.

Summary
=======
CDEGB ( Hamsadhwani ) - root note of this scale is C -> Shift the root note to G -> without any transpose of the original scale, rearrange the scale as GBCDE ( nAgasvarAvaLi ).
Since nishadam and rishabam are missing in nAgasvarAvaLi, there could be an ambiguity to find it's father whether sakarabharanam or harikambhoji:-))
When you play pure indian way with gamakas etc., I guess this ambiguity with father can be resolved by ears...

Aditya and Divakar
Karnatic.com says that nagaswaravali is a janyam of harikambhoji - so I stand corrected.

Once in a while it happens - suddenly:-))...seems like it's an old fashion to do or talk about these kind of things.
It's good to enjoy the music ( composition and performances )along with it's execution part
(gadgets, sequencers, sound cards etc.,).

I like Divakar's spontaneity and I appreciate it...I believe it's not that far that he will establish and settle to deliver pretty good music...
Did you guys listen to him?

Aditya,
You seem to be one of the privileged few who can open Divakar's files ! Geocities has limited bandwidth and I have never been able to hear many of his files.
He is certainly spontaneous as far as I have heard him too.

Divakar,
I have the same problem as Da Vinci. I have not heard any of your latest work, although i wish i could. However, I am very impressed with your dedication to keeping this thread alive with your music alongwith the other composers.

Goto the folder...

RMB click on the file and then click SaveAs from the Contextual Menu

Thanks Aditya for that information. Good to know that you found a way to defeat the Geocities bandwidth limit system.
Divakar,
Improvised has a beautiful melody. I loved your selection of instruments, especially the predominance of the flute above the others. I am afraid i cant give a more technical review. All i can say is that i really liked your latest piece. Good Work!!
