  MS, just noticed this. The much talked about Charukesi 'manmatha leelayai vendrAr uNdO' (which made even greats of those days to take up this raaga in concerts) has its pallavi recycled from the famous 'kripayA pAlayA' by Swathi ThirunAL.
  
  Rajesh, in 'Ayiram malargaLE', the pallavi in NataBhairavi but the charaNam is fully in Sudha Dhanyasi, its janyam.
  'en iniya pon nilAvE' is fully mostly in NB, but D2 and N3 get introduced in the charaNam as embellishments.
  
  The santhams in your example sound the same alright, but composing was not his profession, just a means to another end:)) But this seems to be the trend in some cases in songs set to the same raaga in TFM. 'vanthAL mahAlakshmiyE' (kalyani) has the same santham as 'mugaththil mugam pArkkalAm' set to the same raag. 'yAr tharuvAr intha ariyAsanam' (atana) is nearly the same as 'varugirAr unnai thEdi'. 'kaNNAmoochchi EnadA' has the same santham as 'radha samEthA krishna' (non-TFM:).

  another example of same raga songs having more or less similar sandham is "thoodhu selvathaaradi" from singaravelan(charukesi) possessing more or less the same sandham as "aadal kalaiye thevan thanthathu"..of course the similiarity ends with the first line..however in this case the notes are quite close too..

  Is "Nilavu Paatu Nilavu Paatu" from Kannukkul Nilavu a pure THODI raga song? Yesterday SAPTHASWARANGAL programme, it was mentioned to be THODI...well?
  if yes, will someone explain where in that song that essence comes out typically...(would it be of help to compare it with Gangaikarai Mannanadi from Varusham 16)

  MS, nothing on swarams (kripaya starts with Pa whereas manathaleelayai starts with Sa). I meant that the structure of the pallavi was nearly the same. Esp. the ending at the words 'uNdO' and 'sourE' respectively.
  
  IR Fan, 'nilavu pAttu' , offhand it sounds like Sindhu Bhairavi, but I do not remember the tune too well. A good example of a 'light' thodi would be 'rAjAvin pArvai rANiyin pakkam' (atleast most of it). 'nilavO athan oLiyO' in Arunagirinathar, copied from Salil Choudhry's 'tasveer tEri dil mein' is also in the thodi scale.
  
  Vijay, another one with nearly the same santham, 'AdAtha manamum uNdo' , but the raaga is Latangi.

  imho:
  in the saranam there some major notes...like major ga comes "porana nilavo" (something like in mangkuyele..."kurapatu selai" goes to major chord)
  
  I think calling this light todi..is mere mapping of notes..:):)...this song is more western classical number, starts with C major (prelude), then song goes to Aminor, has a good scale change in the bgm.

  Harimuraleeravam is indeed a mallu song in the film "aaraam thampuraan". One of my all time favs and an irreproducible number from yesudas.

  Srikanth, Vidhya, the whole pallavi is in Hanumathodi scale only..ofcourse IMHO:)). There is an introduction of D2 however later. I noticed this trend in another MGR duet, 'pEsuvathu kiLiyA illai peNNarasai mozhiyA'.'nAn pArththathilE avaL oruththiyaiththAn' comes close too.

  Dear MS, is this the response on the question of whether "Nilavu Paatu" in Kannukkul Nilavu is in Thodi raga?..
  
  and Sriram Lakshman...can you please listen to the song once more and clarify if it is sindhu bhairavi? Then why would A.V.Ramanan, host of SAPTHASWARANGAL programme allow a participant to sing this song as THODI..or is this "Nilavu Pattu" contain Thodi & SindhuBhairavi as well?

  IMO, though the song nilavu paatu seems to be following the keys of thodi ( + n3) it has a great fel of sindhubhairavi in it. That is why I said both harmimuraleeravam and nilavu paattu are in sindhubhairavi.
  
  ONe song which can be used to compare against it is "oru naaLum unai maravaadhu"

  No. "un pErai sonnaale uLLamdhaan poo pookkume" is another case of implicit scale changes. IT is a combo of mohanam and sudhdhadhanyaasi.
  
  IT goes like:

  The confusion of scales comes only because the final d. The songs seems to have a good feel of sudhdha dhanyaasi too because of the same. the final resting swara d imparts an SD feel since it seems to confuse the listneer in fixing the scale note.
