Yesterday watched a movie 'The Ghost in the Darkness'. I was shocked to listen to the 'End credit Title' which was very polishly moulded by Deva in 'Minnalai Pidithu' in the Vijay & Simran starrer. I think the movie is thullatha manamum thullum. The tamil version is just a copy of the Instumental bit of this Michel douglas movie.

I was playing the songs of 'Boys' to my African American colleague. On listening to the song, "Enakkorru girlfriend venumadaa", he said "Man!!... this songs sounds familiar to me. It is similar to Chaka Khan's 'Tell me something good', an old sonf from 80's". There after, I'm trying to find the Chaka khan song in net, but I couldn't.
Karthik, any idea, whether this could be true?

Never put any songs of ARR to any American/UK/Australian guys. That BOYS song is a DIRECT lift from one of the pop albums. Damn, I listened to it a coupla days back.
If you want to impress any of our overseas colleagues, IR is the best bet! Try - How to Name it - for those who are involved in Music. Some of his filmy albums for those who are not so involved.
We dont know , from where all ARR lifts! Even for his 2nd/3rd film - Gentleman - he lifted from a song from OSIBISA - who as a band played in Chennai during late 70s/early 80s.

Not bashing ARR (as a follow-up to my post above).
Lagaan was very good. Just that its a better bet with IR than ARR with overseas colleagues - 'cause ARR lifts often. IR that way, is more original with his compositions.

If you want to take Indian songs to an american/British ARR is the best one.
He has also proved by Bombay dreams.
IIR is good but he copies and reworks western symphonies so we can't take Shri.IR to an Australian or a britisher.
IIR for his Sethu film lifted a famous Willu Pattu tune to make annan Sethuvucku.
Even Webber is impressed by Dilse, it's only a pity a few adamant IR fans refuse.
God bless them and Shri IIR with Luck.

Sheela, your narrow a$$ is good just for farting...You need to have knowledge in western music to understand the way Raja has handled them. HTNI is just an example...
ARR's techno beats are nothing new to the westerners.. the techno loops are now available for free. All you need is those loops, an octopad, a keyboard, a music editing software and a Mac PC to create ARR's kind of music.. This is what all the current MDs are doing.. nothing original. Even I can produce a 5 minutes track with exceptional audio quality in a couple of hours. Its a shame you guys dont realize this. You guys can be proud to listen to such beats but for the westerners, they have variey of music that's what they have been listening for ages... so first know where you come from, understand the difference in music, and what kind of knowledge it requires to produce good music. Then you would automatically learn to appreciate IR's music..
It's funny when people accuse IR for copying.. ARR copies a lot of stuff in each album.. He is no different from Deva. He is an intelligent lifter.. I can write pages on that topic... but I know that won't get into your head and so I dont want to waste my time on that..
btw, western music is no way superior than our Indian music. What do they know about our carnatic and hindustani music? First learn to appreciate our music and be proud of it.. Ilayaraja's music is a blend of both the worlds and He is the only one capable of doing that in this whole world...

dei stop_bashing_IR (@ 65.95.114.108),i want u to write me 5 pages of topic on ARR beeing a lifter,u wont waste ur time at all,im waiting, make sure u keep ur promise,or else i will rate u GONE as ur IR..
the joke is : Ilayaraja's music is a blend of both the worlds and He is the only one capable of doing that in this whole world...
ARR is the only 1 can do that,IR is only good in doing folk music,u want westerners to dance to "Viru Viru Mandi Virumandi" ????than ur in ur dream land!

Mr becareful, hoe u knew IR also lifts many many songs,ARR is def the best,u know, many of my oversease frens laughed at Punnagai Mannan songs???u wnat me to bet IR to them,IR is like a poochi for them,Shakalakka baby is the song which made wsterners dance to our Indian music..nothing else ok??!!!!

Dinesh,
I think, you got the whole thing wrong! You are talking about music for the westerners to dance?! Is that what you understand by 'western music'?
Then they can't dance for songs like 'soukiyama', 'manoothu mandhayile' either.. Man! what to do? Maybe you should ask them to learn barathanatyam, kavadi etc etc.. huh?
Your overseas friends laughed at punnagai mannan? They will laugh at any indian song for that matter.. it's their taste in music. Looks like you are with a bad circle of friends..It's not meant for them... looks like its not meant for you either!
fyi, ARR was also playing keyboard for IR in punnagai mannan.
If you want to listen to a song that has a perfect blend of western notes and indian folk? Listen to 'etho mogam' from kozhi koovudhu. (Now dont show your ignorance by saying that westerners cannot dance for that song!)

you cant say that ilayaraja and rahman copies there r instances where ur composition mite b like someones and this can happen without their knowledge

No point in reasoning to somebody who thinks.. Shakalaka Baby is THE one to be shown to Westerners. Sure, they will listen, may be, even dnace. But, it will be one more of -- their own -- type song. I doubt they will identify it to be anything from an (Indian) original composition.
I repeat. Lagaan was very good. That is one album which has a good blend of Indian + Western music. Has universal appeal. Shakalaka Baby ? We appreciate it, because it's Western Music. But for Westerners ? It's just one more song.
Coming to IR. There are many, and most of his compositions have the best blend of Western + Indian (carnatic to be precise). Try Saagara Sangamam (Salangai Oli) for e.g.; Try 'Enna Satham' in Punnagai Mannan i.e. if you want to impress them with "Indian" music. Not some Western type songs beign paraded as an Indian song.
----be careful..
