Neels
i don't know remember the year of release of "oru oorla oru rajakumari" but i distinctly remember that enya's album came out around 1993-94. But Neels, u have to understand that the humming part and the violin mixes are a STRAIGHt lift from Enya's songs !! Now, that sure is a copy, right ? I mean, I adore IR's music and i think its in a class by itself but when there is a copy, i think we shud admit and accept it ...

as MS points out in the new releases of ARR thread, kurukku siruththavaLE from mudhalvan seems to be "inspired" by pardesi pardesi jaanaa nahin from raja hindustani.

Anand:
I beg to differ from your view altogether. To put my point on a strong ground, I hereby provide the link for all the songs (in midi format) of Enya (shepherd moons). I am also giving the link for "vandhaaL vandhaal". It is in NO way a copy. But I agree it has a very similar setting. Hence personally, I discard your observation as unfounded. It is for the rest of the DFers to decide if I am right.
But, I thank you for intorducing me to such a wonderful genre of music. Enya's music is just too good.

Anand,
I too have a collection of Enya's songs, and was immediately reminded of "Vandhaal Vandhaal" too, but I definitely dont think it was a "straight" lift. The style is definitely the same though!
BTW I've heard such sounds on a KORG keyboard (though I dont possess one), so maybe Raja was just using a new sound on his synthesiser!

I am listening to Enya's Shepherd Moons as I'm typing this. I'm sure it is going to be added to my list of all-time favourites.
I agree that Vandhaal Vandhaal is not copied from any of the songs in this CD.
However, I discovered that the Titanic theme is indeed copied or atleast heavily inspired from the piece "Smaointe..." (the last one in the CD). Listen to the bagpiper kind of sound in the middle of this song. It is very similar to the Titanic piece.
BTW, was Enya the one who sang the song in Titanic?

SRK: No,thats Celine "Yawn" Dion ! :-) and I think Titanic's music as well as the music for "My heart will go on" was composed by James Horner.

Actually, there's another debate going on in the English version Film Music Discussion Forum where everyone knows James Horner likes to lift Jerry Goldsmiths compositions & other classical stuff not forgetting Enya's work for Titanic.

Did anybody notice ARR's use of hollywoodian style of chrous BGM in Mudhalvan? To be more precise, listen to The Omen or First Knight by Jerry Goldsmith.
Also, has anybody noticed how maestro John Williams' score towards the end celebration in Phantom Menace resembles that of our maestro's many chorous works?
The above is just to quote but one.
IR is truly a genius indeed. Amen.

Please view the movie "RUSH" in RealVideo, The background score is royalty-free-music and it none other than ARR's Taal or Taalam. ARR has not yet quit using royalty free music but weird thing is-- he credited as if he the is original creator of the piece.

Song: En jodi manja kuruvi
Film: Vikram
The tune for the lines 'Kaayadha vakkapporu
Un gooda akkapporu" ending lines of charanam
are straight melody lift from Jewish tune
Hava Nagila.
http://www.laurasmidiheaven.com/International/cgi/index2.cgi?dir=Jewish
Earlier we found that the intro for this song is a
straight lift from a spanish bull fight. (Earlier in this thread).
All said, the song is an excellent medley of
various styles.
Interesting, Ilayaraja has used the first phrase of
Hava Nagila and the words themselves as My Dear Marthandan's inspiration (Uttalakadi)
