'poottukkaL pOttaalum veettukkuL' is very nice song with West. Class. influence. At the end of charaNam - 1, when the pallavi 'poottukkaL pOttaalum' repeats for the second time, in the BG, it is heavily backed up with the waves of group violins which shows the WC nature of the tune. And also gives a clue to us tht how this piece can be easily made a full WC piece in the instrumental version.. but at the end of the song, same lines are converted into 'whistle' which conceals the 'classicness' and makes it more colloquial... and ofcourse its IMO. ;)))

Are u suggesting that this song is a good candidate for conversion into an instrumental (as part of the bgm project) ? If so, I agree. :-)
Thanks

sort of yes! And I have one more candidate:
'chittuk kuruvi vetkap paduthu, pettaik kuruvi' from the film chinna veedu. I have a feeling tht this also has 'something' to explore ;))

Some one pointed out "Chittuk Kuruvi Vetkap Paduthu...:
Indeed a great song. Folks, you should listen to this amazing composition by IR, especially if you love "fugue" in the "baroque" style. There are three types of fugue that is between (i) female singer and violin (ii)some kind of organ and female singer and (iii) that organ and violin; and they alternate in layers.. You should listen to it!
Someone also said about "Kaalangal Mazhai Kaalangal". It has some wonderful "fugue" in the interludes, between flute and violin and chello or a combo.
I think these are absolutely great compositions, with the former sort of romantic and the latter sort of triumphant. Both would make wonderful instrumental pieces.

Some one indicated the song, "En iniya Ponn Nilavae.." as may be a jazz composition. From my experience it does not sound like Jazz nor a classical Western style piece. I think it is the absoulte IR's original style!. The song appears to be mostly made of different layers of guitars (lead/background) with the baroque style violin pieces merging in interludes. I hear some instruments which I could't figure out. But this song seems to be one of those original gems that cannot be catagorized into Jazz (may be the drums give that feeling) or baroque (may be the violin/chellos give that indication) or pop (from the guitar's rhythms) or other. I think when we can't fit IR's songs in any catagory, we may conlcude it's his original style. An absolute gift from IR!. I just revere him for this song alone! Any thoughts from others?
A clear Jazz piece that I can make out is "Rum bum bum...Aarumbum.." in Kamal's movie. It probably is the closest to Jazz, I can think of, of all of IR's compositions.

Do you guys have any comments on the 'Malai Kovil' song from 'Veera'. It sounds like some kind of tribal drumming still there is some western classical flavor to the whole song.

Song of Good melody, Rythm, Great Interludes in Violin and Guitar. Ideal Westernised song for Pathos mood. Sung by SPB and Humming by Sailaja.
Guess what actors are Radhika and Thengai Srinivasan.
Could you guys able to Remember? It was a great hit song in late 70's.
Still this song is popular among Inter College light music competitions.
The Song is "Chinna Pura Ondru Enna Kanavinil" from Anbe Sangeetha.

u are right, suren. rum bum is rock'n'roll, but then the blues had two kids, one was called jazz and the other rock'n'roll.
for songs more of the classic jazz variety, check out MSV-TKR's comp. of the 50s and 60s. they were heavily influenced by it.

I do feel RUM BUM BUM belongs to Rock-n-Roll. It even has the lines 1'O Clock 3'O clock (made famous in a Chuck Berry number, I think)
Another oldie, an absolute gem from IR is "Engum Niraindha Iyarkayil Enna Sugamo" (I forgot the film). An unconventional pallavi, mind-blowing interludes and expert singing by SPB and Janaki makes this number one of his best efforts.

Talking about the above song,
Earlier I have heard Vairamuthu saying that his song in 'Moondram Pirai', "Vaanengum Thanga ViNmeengal" has the 'longest pallavi' ever written for a TFM song. But I feel the Pallavi of 'Engum Nirainda' is as long as VM's song. I don't know the lyricist though:
'Engum Niraindha Iyarkkayil Enna Sugamo; Pongi Varum Chinnan Chiru Ullangalil Enna Kanavo Ennangalil Enna Suvayo"
Vaanengum Thanga ViNmeengal Vizhiyimai Mooda Sooriyan Vandu Kadal KuLittherum Neram; Vaanil Oru Deepavali; Naam Paadalam Geetanjali'
Another song, "Kan Maniye Kaadal Enbadu" from 6 ilirundu 60 varai also has a long Pallavi.
All the above songs have been excellently tuned by IR.
Any more that you guys know of?

How about "Siru ponmani asaiyum adhu therikkum pudhu isayum iru kanmani pon imaigalin thaala layam"? a forgotten gem from "Kallukkul Eeram" penned by Gangai Amaran I believe.

Udhaya,
My friend once told me that Kallukkul Eeram has some great numbers; I havent yet had a chance to listen to even one! That's unfortunate, huh? Well, Ceylone Radio used to be my ready reckoner but unfortunately I have not heard any number from the above film. Is there any site where I can find some of these? Please let me know.
I love this number from Karayellam Shenbagappoo "Eriyile Elandamaram Thangachi Vacha Maram" , a very beautiful folkish number, with some great use of vocals. It brings so much joy, you want to sing along...
Another ever-green number that comes to my mind is "Thaalattude Vaanam" from Kadal meengal. What an amazing song! A 'complete song' where every bit and piece comes together beautifully. A flawless composition. Well, his creative juices were overflowing during this period, I guess!
Have you heard 'Pon Vaanam Panneer Thoovudu Inneram' from 'Indru Nee Naalai Naan'? WOW! one of IR&Janaki's best, in my opinion. I wish he gave more such songs for the current generation to appreciate! It's unfortunate that all these songs aren't available on CDs.:((

Dont worry! We can soon expect our re-cycle MD's to take on this tune, and make it available on CD!!

Neels,
'thalaatudhe vaanam' had a great impact on me even when i was a kid. somehow, i always used to imagine myself going in a boat in a lake during dusk, when i hear this song. and well, that's how it was picturised in the film too! this song is an extreme example of how IR's songs had depth and melody in those times. jeyachandran's voice is really soothing. a classic!

Talking about long pallavis and 'complete songs' I feel the new crop of MDs seem to change the beat during the course of the song. I feel as though I have heard more than one song. I think IRs creative genius lies in seemlessly uniting the lyrics with the musical interludes.
I am trying to find out for what all movies Oriental Records have copyrights. If not our only bet is to arrange for an IR tour in the US/Canada and let him play these songs and release the CD with live recording. I am seriously thinking about it. But we have to get SPB, Janaki, Chitra, JeyaChandran and others.

Neels and vijay, 'Pon vanam panner thovuthu inneram' is an amazing number. It gives you a sense of drencing in the rain. We
talk about IR giving the best BGM score but he is also the MD who gives the apt songs (tune and rthym) for the situation. I
sometimes think that directors sometimes (alteast old ones, BR-mani-Robert rajasekar-bhagyaraj-BaluM) used to tell IR the
entire situtions and even how they want to picturise the song. I still remember the leading music of 'Agaya gangai pesum kalam'
by uma ramanan in paneer pushpangal (is the name right?) in which the suresh (actor) takes a stick and taps it against the rail
fence when he walks. How the music blends with the song aswell as the picturisation. Was it Pictureised based on the song or
was the song made for the visualisation Rob-Raja had in mind?. What a humming by SJ for the song for 'paruvakalangalin
kanavu' - The scene - A lady travelling in speed in a bike siting behind her lover. In 'thoral nine pochu' the interlude music for
one of the songs where the hero and heroine go on the river in a 'thoni' circling around. I could go on and on...

Guess, I got a bit carried away:
'Agaya gangai pesum kalam' should read as 'Anatha Ragam kekkum kalam'.
