P.Susheela's songs are life of 20th century's melodious.

In a not so recent Tamil film, a blind Revathi asks Nasser how green colour would appear, to which Nasser asks her to recollect the colour she "feels" when a breeze comes into contact with her. Similarly, if a deaf person asks as to how P.Susheela's voice sounds, the best way to explain to him would be to ask him to taste honey and "feel" the voice in his mind through his tastebuds.
Thanks,
P.B.Mohan

"Nee Pogum Idammellam Naanum Varuvaen Po Po" (P B Sreenivos/P Susheela-Idhayakamalam/K V Mahadevan/Kannadasan)..A demarcated metrical stability in their vocalise in particular diva P. Susheela....the composition sorta north-south amalgamation of the 60s and a different musical arrangement from KVM.
Brings memories of immortal"Unchained Melody" by "Righteous Brothers". "Pachaikillayai Maaralam" or Judy Garland singing “Somewhere Over The Rainbow” ....."Ullam Ullathu Ennidam...Urimai Ullathu Unnidam"...what an alcarity in verbal expression. PS/PBS have had much collaboration during their hey-days, but this one definitely made a mark.
I heard this masterpiece a very long time ago-but, it was’nt until now that I undertook to express my view on this. This is my absolutely favorite song, another example of classic lyrics and soothing melody, and that’s what romantic music is all about. Did KVM record it with big band arrangement? I don’t think so. The lyrics tell a story of a beautiful but lonely woman. Fans like me liked this song for its simple, predictable melody.
Listen to “Sentimental Reasons” (medley) recorded by Nat King Cole and I will tell why…I compare ..because they seem to fit well together and create a very romantic mood. I think I absorbed the melody even though I didn’t know all the words or euphemisms associated with the lyrics, and it has stayed with me all this time. Phonetically beautiful. I have never heard like these before. I thought it was a complete crossover to the mainstream by KVM.
Simply put, the man (KVM) and his compositions are unforgettable. Something was higher though, Smt. Susheela’s apt vocals. But it suited her almost perfectly, and she gives a deep, compelling performance on this recording. The mezzo-soprano tessitura was comfortable for her voice, and the role did not call for a pretty sound. Nor did the composer require the kind of huge vocal power expected of an artiste of her stature.
Her powers of vocal characterization are undiminished, but does one misses a certain amount of charm and sexiness that’s associated with her voice during those times…..No not at all. Nevertheless, in common with all of her work, Smt. Susheela’s interpretation of the libretto is an accomplishment.
Patrons and Listeners committed to Smt. Susheela certainly need to have this recording. She still exhibits adequate control over her accomplice, with KVM’s conducting, are combined in such as way that when examined as a whole, this could be one of the great Carmen (Georges Bizet- Maria Callas or Jessye Norman). Smt. Susheela was very poignant, seductive, and hussy as she conveyed a feeling of hopelessness with her unique brilliance. You will probably love this composition the first time you listen to it, or if you have not had any exposure to the 'great vocalise” Smt. Susheela, and will also appreciate it for what it is.

Some of PS's best songs are those in which the lady of the film sings out of sheer joy of youth or out of the pleasure of being in love. Some examples could be:
*The 4 gems of Vennira Aadai (Ammamma, Kannan Ennum, Enna Enna Vaarthaigalo, Neeraadum)
*Chiittukkuruvikenna (Savaale Samaali)
*Kaana Kan Kodi Vendum (Major Chandrakanth)
*Paruvam Enadhu Paadal (Aaayirathil Oruvan)
*Kalyanachchandayile, Aalayamaagum, Or Naadagam (Sumathi En Sundari)
(Only a coincidence that the above are picturised on the same actress)
*Love Birds (Anbe Vaa)
*Malar Edhu (Avalukkendru Or Manam)
*Chithirai Maadham (Raaman Ethanai Raamanadi)
*Naan Yaar Yaar (Pattanathil Boodham)
*Thedinen Vandhadhu (Ootivarai Uravu)
And a lot many more.
PS's voice played a real important role in enhancing the then "Cho Chweet" image of many an actress of those days
Thanks,
P.B.Mohan

Is Naane Varuvaen Indrum Endrum by PS? Also, talking of "thigil" did PS have a haunting solo in Adhey Kanngal? (I know there was a "aavi" sort of song in the film, I just can't get the opening lines rightaway>)

Also just recalled this one, kalai -
Mannavane Azhalama Kanneerai Vidalama...this has some "thigil" interludes...and the song is picturised on KRV's appearance as a "ghost" in Karpagam? Will that qualify?

Kalai & Naaz,
Talking of thigil songs by PS, apart from Naane Varuven, a few are:
Vaaaa Arugil Vaaaa (Athey Kangal
Pon Maeni Thazhuvaamale & Mullil Roja (Yaar Nee - The situation makes these songs out to be love songs; but the lady of the movie (double-action) is portrayed in such a spooky manner that whatever she sings stimulates thigil)
Incidentally, is the really eerie Venmegame in Aayirum Jenmangal by PS?
Thanks,
Mohan

Kalai & Naaz,
With those shrill screams, Enna Thaan does qualify.
Some comedy(ish) numbers could be:
Naan Satham Pottuthan Paaduven - Velli Vizha
Then Kinnam - Then Kinnam
Thanks,
Mohan

Comedy songs by PS. Good start by Kalai. PBMohan, good listing. Well hearing such songs really makes me wonder if so much expression and liveliness have come out of this humble frame!
1. Aduthaathu Ambujatha (Edhir neechal)
2. Vadiyamma Vaadi (Saroja Devi starrer - dont remember the film! The best is when PS sings "Tho tho tho thot". LRE is equally good in that song.)
3. The Theru koothu song in "Navarathiri".
4. The song in Navarathiri at the Mental Hospital (dont know if PS is one of the singers).

Kalai,
One more thigil(??) song
nE yengE en ninaivugal angE from mannippu (This has TMS version too..)
Mohan,
veNmEgamE veNmEgamE from Ayiram jenmangal is by SJ
Ravi,
I think you are refering to the song "vantha nAl muthal intha nAl..." (This is a mimic version of Pallum Pazhamum TMS song) I think this is by k jamunA rANi and not by PS..

Thanks for the line that was so close on my tongue and yet so far...Vaa Arugil Vaa is the song from Adhey Kanngal that has been haunting me for so long, and still I was not able to put the words into a tuneful line. Great song. Mp3 version anyone? Please.
It is to PSs immense credit that even her song that could be termed "horror" (=thigil) have more than trace of sorrow and poignancy. Emotionally, the songs could fill any dried up thennaga kulam to the brim. The songs you mention (except the Nanal one and the one from Yaar Nee - I'll have to listen to them again to be sure) are on the same pedestal as LM's "Naina Barse" "Kahin Deep Jale Kahin Dil" "Kya Jaanon Sanam" "Gumnaam Hai Koi"...
What about the song - more thriller than horror - from En Thambi?
Thattattum Kai Thazuvattum...? I situation and picturisation of this song was both intense and invigorating. Whips and Roses. Some films were so ahead of their time (without even knowing it.) :-)

first line: songs not song.
last line: "like the" is missing after "I".
