can you pinpoint one musical wonder (in theory) arr did the past 10 years.
Srikanth avargaLE, this is not fair ! YOU of all people shouldnt say this. I hope you said this just for fun :)
I strongly believe that an objective discussion abt music is a contradiction, because music IS extremely subjective.
But u say musical wonder in theory .... that means, I assume you are defining something called wonder , which is impossible to do in music.
The word theory suggests that you are comparing his musical score with some predefined (over centuries) patterns/ rules/ theoretically established WC/Carnatic norms etc...
Music theory is important to the composer as a starting point to do his own thing..., but it cannot be used as a means of value judgement to call a creation wonderful or otherwise.
All IMHO.

hari, i think u got Sriks wrongly.... iam sure Sriks would be the last person to put down ARR :-).... probably he was asking Bharath to list the wonders that ARR had done.... iam sure he did not mean that ARR has not done any wonders.....

//if you think I am off track , then so are you. If you want to post something, post something which makes sense, I did not see anything related to ARR's experiments in your posting and the result was my, another unrelated, posting. //
May i pls know JAG what u are hinting at ?

//I personally dont know how I can handle 15 courses in 1 semester and I do know I would get less grades in some of the courses. //
one of my classmates passed 14 papers in a semster! (9 arrears). all with first class!!
in your words, he may be great, but you (and me too)are the greatest!!
i am just being curious. whether you participate in this df and discuss in a lateral way, just for psychological analysis.

//"also dont question or insult others and their musical ability, it is much more than you.. "//
now where did this happen?
what are you testing me for. I have told before I am not a composer? I have told a million times I represent an average man!
I dont know/care who you are? I have not followed your posts b4 to have some pre determined prejudices about you? (like the way u have about me)
Please see my postings in this thread b4 you'll better understand and reevaluate your prejudices about me.
b.t.w You are not taking me task at all. Infact you have nothing else other than suspicions of me being a anti-IR person to back your claim! I make sure my words leave me politically correct. I also make sure to leave it open to interpretation.
Your reaction and others included has been a fascinating experience. I have challenged you in some way for you to react so strongly! But the challenge has not be obviously in my words but in the gaps between it and as to what it might have suggested!

In my opinion, the most innovative album from ARR till date is thiruda thiruda-pity this came so early in his career and he has been so bogged down by commercial aspects.one advantage IR had was the parallel emergence of creative film makers in tamil like bharathiraaja, BM, maniratnam, rudriah, mahendran etc in tamil.people like vamsi etc in telugu.ARR has been totally let down in this dept imho

Yaaro..i agree with you there..Thiruda Thiruda can easily be the most innovative work of ARR..The Sopratic "Konjam Nilavu" and "Veerapandi Kotaiyile"....the refreshing "Thee Thee" and "Putham Pudhu Bhoomi"..unforgettable !
The picturization couldn't match the musical nuances well then that maybe too much to ask for !

guys, I happened to see Laagan, the backgrounds were very impressive. Way to Go Arr.
also something to ponder,
for some reason I thought the song that people dance to brings rain (Gan gan) was too rich for the situation. This song is really nice to hear it in the CD. , but when i saw it the video I felt it was the score and arragement were too rich and colourful. But the people who dances are not shown colorful.
I basically compared it with the song from Thaneer thaneer (Msv) "megam karkuthadi"...similar situtation, the vocals and instrumentation were apt for the situation for that song. Only difference here is hindi audience, but still wan'st it too bright.
Next question is who is to blame here,. ARR or the director?
Any comments ?

cosmician,
//"The picturization couldn't match the musical nuances well then that maybe too much to ask for !"//
enna ithu! I think Konjam Nilavu and thee thee will go down as one of the best picturized songs in tfm history.
But I know what you mean. the first time i listened to those songs I had a totally different imagination of how the picturization wud be.
trivia:
1) the film used by PC and MR for thiruda thiruda was futuristic and very expensive it seems. (it cost 1 lac a meter)
2) Thee thee was inspired by "in the closet" video of MJ. The french cinematographer who took "in the closet" it seems was PC srirams hero ( I read this in "the week" i dunno if its true. but there is definite resemblance)

..,
From the movie's theme point of view,I think the picturization is appropriate.ARR added some additional layers to the song which were unnecessary(my opinion after seeing the picturization).-)
Making different people sing(lip-synch) was a good idea to set up the prominent characters quickly.
OTOH,"Chale Chalo" surely had a better effect in the movie.-)

I was also impressed by
1) the simulation of an "irish bagpipe" sound in come on come on oh! kamakshi
2) the fusing of apache indian style of singing with a tamil song.
3) aslam mustafas effort in "samba samba" was different.
ofcourse picturization was nasty for all 3 songs
In iruvar
1) venilla vennila was a song of different genre, although most style of music used was not typically indian in that movie it was a travel back in time
2) the use of saxophone as a charatcter in duet. wonderful utilization of kadri's skills. I loved the transition in "en kathley " song. It was a wonderful number by spb
3) reggae style song- "chinna chinna aasai"
4) the BGM for thiruda thiruda, i have talked abt this a lot, but the cool rap song "thiruda thiruda", the humming of "sooryo sooryo sambhe" and that "aathukulai ayilai meenu" bit as bgm was really different.
5) use of bharathiraja's voice in "kaadu ..." song
6) for a south Indian born and brought up in south India to compose with the likes of NFAK and composing "zubeida" which was also incidentally a retro movie was also a class act.

//"regarding work ethic-what do you mean bharath-was anything unethical going on before advent of ARR?:-)
"//
The work ethic i wanted to elaborate was that the singers and the orchestra neednt be present for recording at the same time. I have heard in hariharans interview that even for duet songs he wud sing separately and go away and the other singer will complete it when he/she arrives.
The music is added separately later. A lot of time the singers have been surprised at the final product. because arr had added a lot after they had sung and left.
this is good because the recording need not stop because of unavailability of 1 person.
nocturnal work ethics have led to shift system i guess :-)

Bharath,
Correct me if I am wrong, isn't this what track recording is about?? I guess this must have been going on before ARR too.
SPB was mentioning in an interview that they were doing a three track recording for Kaathal Ooviyam.

Andhaman kadhali was the first Tamil film in which songs were recorded using track recording.

Digression :
Bharath...
Yes...by the standards prevalent those days and even now..those songs will remain the best picturised in Indian Film...i read one film critic who had said that Dil Se had one of the best picturised songs in Indian Film history !
My only complaint is that the choreography of our songs..movements, steps, expressions, sets, costumes, situation are excellent...where we still lack is in the Camera movements...have you noticed that most of our song sequences still have stationary frames...more like a stage performance.
Even "Thee Thee" and Konjam Nilavu" - the camera movements couldnt match the pace of the songs.
Prabhu Deva had brought in some variations..notable are "Malargale Malargale" but even he likes to show off his choreographing skills through long takes.
The song picturization that takes the cake until now is from a little known 1996 Tamil film...there is a song "Magic Magic" (any one of u remember? - I dont remember the name, or the MD, saw the song on Sun TV)..camera movements were excellent and fast and gelled with the dance movements and music.
Another song with excellent camera movements was "Hey Shabba" from Karna...there is a sequence where the Handicam is put to good use...
Maybe if the camera movements start gelling with the dance steps and music...we have to step into a MTV video style of picturization and maybe Indian audiences wont like that. But I feel that this will add an extra dimension to the song picturization and enthrall the viewers if done well.

If at all Mr.(Padmashree) A. R. Rahman have conducted any experiment with music, where's the results, there seems to be only discussions and never ending conclusions about him. I think ARR have wanted to spray novel coatings onto the already painted Great Wall of TFM, thats all.
Only lately, he's really trying somethin new just to be different from others in the field. Consider.
