hi,
In junior vikatan they are publishing an interview of ARR. it started last week & i think it will go upto 10 or more issues. this week there is an interesting Qn. & more interesting answer. I'll try to translate it for U !
Q : When IR was in top of music indudtry., he did music for 4 or 5 films at a time., but he was able to show some variety in songs. none of his 2 songs released at same time will be similar. But u r doing only one film at a time., u take lot of time but the final result -- ??., almost of all ur works look similar ! Why this happens ??
A : This may be due to the fact that i use same set of instruments in all songs with different combinations !
WHAT A 'MAZUPPAL' ANSWER !
DFers., what do u think about this. I think the Qn. is quite valid. for e.g take GUNA & THALAPATHY which are released on the same day. see the variety IR is able to produce between the songs of these films. IMHO ARR is lagging in this & thats why he didn't tried to object the Qn.
UR OPINIONS PLEASE !
NagasubramaniaN

"Scratch pad, lead guitar, warm pad, slap bass 1,2,... etc., ellAm instruments. If you want different kinds of instruments, you have so many lead keyboards. We are talking about tunes. Engineering the tune with different sounds, is not the issue here. Creativity is the issue.
The question here is very simple: "tunes are all the same" There is no variety!! Mere filling the tune with some new instruments or synthesizing the instruments does not lead us anywhere!!
Hmmm... you make it sound as if the whole process is so simple! If it was so simple to score like ARR...
I am really surprised that you dont find ARR creative! To me he is one of the best composers TFM has seen...
ARR scoring only for Arvind swamy(??)
I think he scored for
Arjun (Gentleman, now Mudalvan), Prabhu (Duet, Uzhavan), Prabu Deva (Love Birds, Kadalan), Kamal (Indian), Vijaya kumar & Naploean (Kizhaku cheemayelae), Prashanth(Jeans, Thiruda Thiruda), Raja (karuthamma), Abbas(kadhal desam), vineet (may madham) Rahman (sangaman), kunal (kadalar dhinam), manoj (tajmahal) just to name a few.
Even in hindi he seems to take scored for (Sharukh khan, Aamir khan, askshayee khanna, sanjay dutt) and is scoring for virtually every other hero. Refer to popular rahman site if you want details!
I dont know what you mean my manin manbu!
I think he is trying to give atleast one song rooted in carnatic song per movie. I feel his music is predominantly (south)Indian. Personally I was very surprised at the MSV type music he had scored for Iruvar (esp the song pookodiyin ponnagai).
you are entitled to your opinion that uyirae is junk, but the fact that it is still at the top of the charts (despite the movies poor showing at box office) goes to show that a lot of people allover India like it (even TFM polls seem to say so :-).
Also your posting seem to suggest that he doesnt have a commercial value. A lot of movies sell / run bcos of his music. Let us also not forget that movie goers today also have the option of watching song sequences in cable tv as well as video tapes. The very fact that a lot of hindu directors opt for him, shows the kind of impact he has made.
Srikanth:
Why dont you talk about some of the novelties that rahman has brought in to TFM in the creativity of ARR thread. Being a musician yourself I think you will be able to explain things better.

There was a typo in the earlier posting!
Read 'that a lot of hindu directors opt for him' as 'that a lot of hindi directors opt for him'

Nagasubramanian:
I have the last two weeks' issues of Junior Vikatan (Nov 25, Dec 2)
in front of me. It has ARR's answers for fans'
questions. But I did not find that particular
question that you have mentioned at the intro
to this thread. Can you clarify in which JV
issue that particular question appeared?
There are one or two questions involving IR,
but otherwise there is nothing much in all those
Q & A's!!

ARR is the best music director now in the Indian Film Industry. We can divide Tamil Film Music into 3 eras. The first one was that of MSV, second IR and now it is the third, that of ARR. Please don't compare between music directors. Each has his own style. ARR has lot of creativity and he has taken TFM to great heights like IR. There is no doubt in that. He has composed music for 'Jeans' and 'Iruvar'. Don't you feel there is lot of variety in the music of these two films?

Iruvar - MSV type music, because, the movie belonged to MGR/KK era:)))
Otherwise, I dont wish to 'indulge' in this talk anymore. (two years of IR-ARR tishum tishum in tfmdf is enough, i presume. nAn joots:))

Hi guys,
I can see a lot more maturity in his words these days compared to earlier ones. Especially in his answer to KJY's comments. It shows a lot of maturity, as also his answer to the question concerning IR. Of course, he was "smart" to avoid answering anything he had learnt about music from IR.
"smart" - implies he is still insincere and not genuine about having learnt even some musical knowledge when working with IR.
BTW, he was also good enough in accepting to some extent that his music may be sounding repetitive because of usage of same set of instruments. No MD would even venture to admit things to such an extent. That to me is appreciable.
Finally, even if his songs are repetitive how does it matter one bit ? As long as his market value stays at the same point it does not matter one bit, right ? If people like his repetitive songs, well and good.
Maybe it may not impress some of us so much. So what ?
Also, given the level of analysis that takes place in TFM-DF I feel it is completely futile to discuss in terms of a complete album. I liked Poovukkul and Kannodu only in Jeans. In Iruvar I liked narumugaiye and "starting piece of hello mR" and some pieces in Kannai katti and viduthalai songs. Why does anyone want to come up with a score for a complete album - instead of individual songs.
Looking at it this way I have only Ratchagan (I did not like the lyrics in Chandiranai) and Romeo and a few others which as a album I did not like.
He gets all my respect these days only because he was able to give a good competition to IR and also I see him respecting IR these days.
