These are the great lines of Kaviyarasu Kannadasan in the movie Ratha Thilakam where he acts in the movie singing these lines. ( Song.. Oru Koopayilae yen kudiyiruppu)
What a visionary he was ? Indeed, he is NIRANDARAMAANAVAN.
I share some of my observations about Kavingyar. I want all the fans of HIM to join this discussion and add more quality material in praise of his great works.
This is the only way we pay tributes to this GENIUS.
WILL WE EVER GET BACK A KAVINGYAR LIKE KANNADASAN ??

Mahendra Raj,
i think you are mentioning the song "Isai thamizh nee seydha" sung by the great T.R.Mahalingam(TRM).
btw one more great song "pazham neeyappa gnaana pazham neeyappa" sung by the great K.B.SundraamabaaL(KBS) is also there.
this is the film in which 4 great singers are having great songs showcasing their full calibre.
irony is that these four songs have done other great songs like "podhigai malai uchchiyilae purappadum thendRal", "neelachchaela kaattivandha samuththira poNNu", pale.
Wait! this hasn't ended. you have two more great songs "paaththa pasumaram" and "ondRaanavan uruvil iraNdaanavan"....
appappa solli maaLaa inimai. APN-KKD-KVM aendRaal udanae ninaivukku varum padalagaL thiruviLayaadal paadalgaL thaam.
its a all time great movie in thamizh in all aspects, esp. songs.

This is in response to Ramachandran's query again.
Contrary to what has been impressed upon, kaviarasar had had encouraged many budding poets through his 'Thendral' periodical. He offered cash incentives etc. to best contributions from greenhorns. Even, through popular and widely circulated weeklies like 'Kumudham', kaviarasar encouraged would-be poets by coming out with the first stanza and asking them to respond by completing the whole poem in the subsequent issues.
It was a well-known fact that new lyricists in the Tamil film industry used to consult him. He did'nt mind at all and he obliged them taking in his stride.
There were three assistants who used to work with kaviarasar, namely, Panju Arunachalam, Rama Kannappan and Kanmani Subbu (his son). Panju Arunachalam, gradually broke away and went on his own to become a film producer, screen-play writer and lyricist. Rama Kannappan (his cousin) went on to write memoirs about kaviarasar whilst Kanmani Subbu now writes songs and screen plays for tv serials. He had written the song "What a waiting" ('Ninaithalae Inikkum' (1979) and in 1985 was awarded the best song writer ("Naan thedum sevvanthi poo ithu"). He is now making his debut as a tv serial director.
Kanmani Subbu related to me of his father's disappointment after seeing 'Anbulla Athan' (1981) where Kanmani Subbu was trying to make his mark as the director whilst his brother Kalaivaanan was playing the hero with kaviarasar penning the three songs. Kaviarasar told them point blankly that he is saddened that none of his off springs could take off after him in the Tamil cinema after seeing the quality of the film!
Therefore, kaviarasar was not to be blamed.

Kupps, thanks for the info.
Actually what I was trying to impress was that the song "Isai Thamizh nee seythaarutsathanai", "Oru nal pothuma" and "Paatum naanae" were inter-connected to the story situation scenes appearing one after another in a single screen-play but with different perspectives. All songs written at one go, save for the temporary pause for "Oru naal pothumaa"!
Btw, the actual title of the song "Oru naal pothuma" is "Naathamaa Geethamaa". Dr. Balamurali Krishna shot to overnight fame after this song although he had had earlier sung a duet "Thangaratham vanthathu veethiyilae" ('Kalai Koil' 1964).

HI Sriram,
Gnana Pazhathai by K.B. Sundarambal was by Sankaradas swamigal. Except that song all the songs are written by Kaviyarasu in that movie. ( 9 songs for that movie by Kaviyarasu out of total 11 songs)

Hi Sriram,
I agree that there was an issue surrounding "Paatum Nanae". It was claimed that since Ka.Mu.Sheriff being a Muslim the name of kaviarasar was purposefully inserted so as to lend authenticity to this Hindu epic film. But it was proved that kaviarasar had indeed penned the song.
Similar controversy arose for the song "Irukkum idathai vittu" ('Thiruarutchelvar' 1967) where again Ka.Mu.Sharif's name was involved. Kaviarasar clarified that he lifted the theme from a sitther's song.
Kaviarasar was also careful enough to let the first stanza as it is like in "Un kannil neer vazhinthaal" ('Vietnam Veedu' 1970) and of course "Gnanapazhathai pizhintu" which was followed by his own "Pazham neeyappa" which had undoubtedly overtaken the former due to the fast-paced rythm.
Kaviarasar had lifted themes from various sitthars including Kanbar, Pattinithaar, Bharaathiyaar and simplified them for the layman to understand them better. He had no qualms over this as he felt that he was doing a service for the ordinary folks. Above all, he did not go on denial or defence. He was gracious enough to admit and justify his actions. That is kaviarasar!

Today is kaviarasar's 22nd death anniversary. A whole new generation and still he is being talked about, discussed and debated.
Can folks in Chennai recall the mood this day on October 17, 1981? It will be helpful to his fans outside of India.
Thanks

I just happened upon this website and this thread. It makes for some great reading. Thanks to everyone who contributed.
There is no doubt he was a great poet and had a wonderful ability to capture the essence of a situation in a very meaningful manner and often a deep and thoughtful manner. He didn't write abstractly but often used an imagery or an idea that people could easily relate to. For instance, I love the lines below from Baagap Pirivinai:
Angam Kuraindhavanai
Angam Kuraindhavanai
Alagillaa AAn Maganai
Mangayargal Ninaipadhundoh Ponnammaa
Veettil Manam Paysee Mudippadhundoh Sollamaa
Manam Paysee Mudippadhundoh Sollamaa!
A handicapped and not so handsome man is on the verge of loathing in self pity and the character asks a very germane question very poetically. The words are very simple and evocative, and you are filled with a deep love for Tamil.
Our school systems for the most part have not managed to convey this feeling even after years of schooling. People seemed to have loved to make Tamil seem convoluted and arcane. The curricula seems too rigid in its focus on grammar, punctuation and the different kinds of la's and stuff like that, but the essence and beauty of the subject is lost.
Sitting in North America, we often wonder how to convey this feeling of the Tamil language, culture and heritage to our children, and wish we could somehow make our kids appreciate some of these marvelous reflections on the human condition, even if only through the medium of cinema.
Some of the opinions here tend to be slightly overstated, but maybe this is as it should be. I hope we also generate similar threads on Valluvan, Bharadhi and other modern poets and thinkers who have shaped Tamil poetry, literature and thought to what it is today.
