Guys & gals, I have already put this stuff in one of the therads. But, owing to the poor response, I am starting it as a topic. I am sure if some of us get together, we can sponsor an album of say, IR's great BGM pieces or something like that. I really miss listening to them. I am sure we could raise the funds over a period of time.
Interested people, please respond in this thread. We will have to plan out the details also.

srinath,
I have always been an observer on the tfm. I saw all yr posting and thought I'll throw in my idea for a song.
How about 'Adho Mogham, Adho Dhaagam...' from Kozhi Koovudhu. I read in a magazine many years back that IR showed some of his works to a Hungarian musician( Dont remember who) . And he was very impressed with this one....
Goodluck to all of you on this effort.

Guys,
Don't you think Poongaatru pudhidhaanadhu is a good representative of IR's handling of flute, violins, percussion and bass.

srinAth,
i think we can include the yenvAnilE interludes but not the song. there is a beautiful counterpoint for acoustic guitar in the song pUndhaLirAda in pannIr pushpangaL. short, simple and sweet. besides that the song is a bore. i would like to add this also to the list of tidbits.
i am cursing my memory now. there are so many songs of his with excellent counterpoints and i am not able to recollect them.
shrinAth you can listen to o pApA lAli at rAmasAmi girIsan's site at http://www.m59.big.ac.at/~grama and click on classical iLayarAjA. it's the 14th song. listen to the interludes, the second one especially and observe how beautifully the violins interweave.
i think we can include some songs from guru. dhEva sangItham for operatic music; guru charaNam nAthA and arnNa kiraNa nAtham for orchestration. how about that murattuk kALai song?
(1) nalam vAzha
(2) kARRil endhan gIdham
(3) pani vizhum malarvanam
(4) O papA lAli
(5) dhEva sangItham nAthA
(6) aruNa kiraNa nAtham
(7) murattuk kALai song.
i am skeptical of nalam vAzha also, but if we don't come up with a better one i will like to have that song.

Bingo ! Poongatru has the most creative orchestration that I have ever heard ! Just to think of the pallavi, charanam and the interludes together is mind-boggling ! The charanam especially is so classical (beautiful table beats !) and the interludes (especially the part where the Violins and Flute tango with each other !) so innovative. The pallavi is more western. But how beautifully IR has merged all three ! Incredible song ! IMO, Poogatru is a must-include ! What say Arul ? We can drop "Nalam Vaazha" if a suitable sustitute can be found !

guys,
i will be back after an hour. i am desperately going through my collection to select the gemmest of the gems. pUngARRu is a great choice. nalam vAzha goes out the window :-)
(1) pUngARRu pudhidhAnadhu
(2) pani vizhum malarvanam - mow i feel doubtful of this :-)
(3) kARRil endham gIdham
will be back later.

I second "EdhO mOgam! EdhO dhAgam" from 'kOzhi koovudhu' - Great interludes. Even I have heard that iLayarAjA showed this piece to get the previous symphony chance...

for the 3 eras,
1.baroque - aanandha raagam (typical bachian interludes)
2.vienna - aruna kirana (a good development, allegro(?) ).
3.romantic - chandhiranum sooriyanum (probably the purest WC without mix of carnatic from IR).
endhap poovilum vaasam undu was supposedly a spin off from dvorak..so, that shouldn't be taken.

Leave out HTNI and NBW ? You guys must be mad. These should be No1 and No2. Also India 24 Hrs.

Chandhirarum, Sooriyarum makes my list !!!! I love that interlude where the violins and the honky-tonk piano (?) come together, with the piano changing pace midway thru' a piece !!!
"Chandarasu sami velu (rickshawkaran cough :-))
Koothu meda onnu katti vaippen
Aaravalli, sooravalli, allirani vedan valli veshangala poduravan,
Nondhu vaadidaama paathukkuvaen !
Mukkiyama seyya vandha soli onnu vuttu poche,
periyaasupaththuripol oorukkonnu katti,
Noi nodiye illama Ottuvaen !
Vellakaara doctargala thedi kondaanthu, Ponnammavin kann thuranthu kaatuvaen !,
Duyaa, dara duyaa.......
The italicized line changes so beautifully from the previous line ! An instrumental of this song would rate as an all-time great by any standards ! But I think we can take a chance with IR's voice for this song ! It is DEFINITELY worth it, IMO !!!

Hmmm pg is the first to express an opinion (strongly enuff ;-))) in favour of HTNI and NBW making the grade - I still don't think so. My favourite past-time - shall we take a vote ? ;-)) I am against NBW and HTNI being included. Who's for and who else is against ?
My list so far is -
Sure-shots:
1. Poongatru Pudhiraanadhu
2. Chandirarum Sooriyarum
3. Katril Endhan Geetham
Probables:
1. Vegam Vegam
2. Pani Vishum Malar Vanam
3. Aananda Raagam
4. Yen Vaanile (they're not going to understand Jency's mispronunciation anyway ! Her voice doesn't detract much from the song either, IMO)
5. Nalam Vaazha

anyway,
1.why continuing education dept? IR enna course edukkappOraaraa:)
2.that name madhan mentioned is not there in CSO admin page.
3.what's the use in giving half baked WC numbers and not even a sonata or so?
4.they might want score sheets and not cassettes.
5.i doubt if a conductor will even look at these numbers (that too with jarring vocals in it) and this might just end up in "world music" in ravinia...

Edho Mogham is considered to be one of IR's best - I remember reading somewhere that he mentioned that the French appreciated it a lot during a world tour of his. But somehow, I have never taken a liking to that song in particular - but I am not opposed to it as it has a veritable track record of impressing almost everyone who has heard it !!!

Friends , actually Kaushik Sriraghav had sent an e-mail informing me that
he is sending HTNI and GURU albums to the Chicago Symphony Orchestra -
since I felt that it is a must for all of us to be in regular touch
from now on, for a concerted, collective promethean effort to achieve
something in this context, I am forwarding our conversations to all of
you ------ IF ANY OF YOU HAVE BETTER SUGGESTIONS, WHICH IAM
SURE MANY OF YOU WOULD HAVE, PLEASE DO COME OUT WITH THEM THICK AND
FAST AND LET US ACT !! oh Goodness me, I feel more tensed and excited
than I would be when preparing to present a research paper in a
National Conference!!
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dear Kaushik,
Well I have a lot of things is my mind regarding the material we can
send to the CSO on IR's works - darn my research work - in this hot and
humid Goa, with all the pending work on my head - nevertheless, here I go:
1. Firstly, we should decide about sending only CDs - I don't think
sending cassettes would be a good idea .
2. Sending NBW, HTNI, India 24 Hours, Guru is a must . But we should also
try to get a collection of IR's best under the title
"AVANTE GARDE MUSIC FROM Maestro.Illayaraaja"
We should inlcude songs like
i Andhi mazhai ,
ii Pani vizhum malar vanam,
iii Ninnukori varnam,
iv Roja poo aadi vandhadhu,
v chinna poo chinna poo, kannellam vannappoo,
vi O vasantha raja,
vii Yengengo sellum yen yennangal,
viii Megam kottattum,
ix oru poongaavanam pudhu manam,
x pon maanai thendudhey
xi valai osai kala kala vena
xii needhaaney yendhan pon vasantham
xiii idhu oru nilaa kaalam - from "TIK TIK TIK"
xiv netru indha neram - from "Tik Tik Tik"
xv poongadhavey thaazhthiravaai
xvi sandhana kaatrey senthamizh ootrae
xv yennuyirae vaa yennuyirae from "Poonthotta kaavalkaaran"
xvi yen iniya pon nilaavey
xvii yen vaaniley, from "JOHNNY"
xviii pottu vaithha kaadhal thittam from "SINGAARAVELAN"
xix pooviley medai naan podavaa from "PAGAL NILAVU"
SOngs which are sheer melodious delights :
i pon vaanam panneer thoovudhu inneram
ii puttham pudhu kalai
iii paruvamey
iv Three songs from Eera vizhi kaaviyangal
v O Butterfly
vi Ninaivo ou paravai
vii Kannan vandhu paaduginraan
viii Maharaajanodu raani vandhu serum
ix yennai thalaatta varuvaalo
x uravenum pudhiya vaanil
xi nalam vaazha from "Marupadiyum"
xii yennulley yennulley from "Valli"
xiii Kodiyiley malliappoo
Another list of songs based on the wonderful chord progressions -
for this we need to get the advices from regular TFM DFers - will it
be possible for you to browse the TFM DF tonight ot tomorrow - I will
once again post in detail about the suggestions I have.
Kaushik, since whatever we are sending would be making the first
impression of IR on the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, I suggest we send in
only the very best, accompanied preferably by an Introductory letter
/note nicely written /printed explaining the choice of the songs on
the basis of chords, melody and classical elements, punctuating the same
with examples of song No in CD number one and so on.
Will see you in DF for the rest.
In the meanwhile you may please go ahead in sending HTNI and GURU CDs to
the CSO preferably with an intriductory letter - I will send another mail
to you immediately following this E-mail as to how the intro.letter
may look like.
Madhan.

In this regard, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra with its stellar foundation
and reputation in promoting good music should play a significant
role, which will definitely bring some sensational, brilliantly
sublime music of Mr.Illayaraaja, to the millions of music savvy ears
in the West.

the Chicago area ? Then I suggest if it is possible for you , please do
try and visit the contact person I had mentioned in CSO in person and hand
over the CDs to him/her in person.
Kaushik, one last thing - We may encounter a few hiccups here and there
- but our supreme objective is to get the things done in the end - so a
bit of tact, a bit of suave diplomacy, a bit of good Public Relation
tactics, a lot of patience and perseverence in what is called for now -
for all this, we need to be regularly in touch with each other - please
do visit the TFM DF -
In the meantime, we should also write a letter to IR about our efforts
and directly ask him for suggestions..

shrinAth,
regarding jency's pronounciation, people in the western hemisphere do not like sharp female voice except for the operas. i have heard so many times people claiming lathA jAnaki and even chiththrA et al sounding like school children (of course these are commoners, not the musical elite !?!?!) jency had sung that song pretty badly. i would strongly vote against that.
my opinion on chandhirarum sUriyarum is that it is more an austrian marching bands kind of song than romantic. it is a good song tho'. i would like to place it in the waiting list.
in my list HTNI, NBW goes out the window. I24H has a couple of good numbers we can add them. i will come up with them this afternoon.
i am listening to innum ennai enna seyya pOgiRAy. the opening piece is awesome. besides that the song goes like a pop song. the interludes are good not great tho'.
my sure!list:
(1) kARRil endhan gIdham
probables list:
(1) pUngARRu pudhidhAnadhu
(2) Anandha rAgam
(3) chandhirarum sUriyarum
(4) endhap pUvilum vAsam uNdu
