Remember the Music Director trio Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, the music directors of Kamal Hassan's Alavandhaan. They seem to be missing in the Tamil scene for the last 2 years and they are doing really good in the Hindi field. They have given solid musical hits in Hindi such as; Mission Kashmir, Dil Chahtha Hai. I think they can be brought to the Tamil films again. I feel they are definitely better than Deva and a few others. I think they are the best as far as Hindi Film Music goes after A R Rahman.
I would like healthy comments who listen to Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy and have a fair knowledge of Hindi Film Industry.

Thanks for your mail!
No I am not saying that south indian culture is the best or anything. Ofcourse I am proud that we are overtaking everybody after a brief period of langour.
Ok now that you talk about assamese culture. In Dil Se a terrorist rightly points out and says - "For you people (the pseudo-intellectuals), India is Delhi! You do not care if a person dies in Assam!"
Isn't this statement true? Yes I agree they should not take up terrorism for that reason! But how many people in the North really care about us?? Except for idli Sambhar what do you guys know abt Tamil Nadu??
Come to chennai, I will show you theaters that screen most of the Hindi movies! Go to any casette shop here you can get Hindi Casettes! Can I do the same in North???
You people are unwilling to accept our culture! We watched your Lagaan in Hindi. Cheered for it in the Oscars! Did you people watch any of our movies in Tamil or Telugu atl;east with subtitles???
You did watch lots of dubbed movies like Hindustani(Indian), Roja(Roja), Bambai(Bombay). Tell me, would you guys have cared for these movies if it were not for the name 'Bombay', common issue of terrorism in Roja etc.??
AR Rahman was once asked in an interview why Hindustani instruments and feels are commonly used in Tamil songs but North Indian songs hardly use Carnatic instruments and feel?
AR Rahman asnwered: "We south indians are more broad minded. We accept hindustani music and any music. But if we put south indian music in north they would not enjoy it and would complain it sounds too southish"
This is an irrefutable argument! People like Mr. Swapan have themselves complained that SPB sounds too southish and AR Rahman tunes are too southish! If you guys really love our culture like you say, why would you complain then??
Take tamil music. In every movie album that releases there is a sitar tune, a tabla or a santoor! So you wanna call us narrow minded??
I refuse to appreciate the good things in North unless the south is given full recognition!! The only place where we get some reasonable justice is at National Awards! Malayalam films and Bengali films bag most awards! I am happy becos recognition is given to worthy efforts!
But why did you send crap like Devdas to the Oscars while a gem like Mani Ratnam's Kannathil Muthamittal(freedom award jerusalem film fest; third place toronto film fest; anothet jury award in a californian film fest forgot which one) never even got noticed??
Isn't this bias?? How many of you know Shivaji Ganesan, the winner of highest civilian honor for arts and culture from France Govt, Honorary citizenship of Egypt. Sivaji Ganesan was recognised abroad but our shameful brothers north of Vindhyas were so busy idolizing the Kapoors and the Bachchans!
I can name any chief minister of any state in the north. I know what reforms are undergoing in Punjab, I know what is happening in UP politics. I know how efficient Shiela Dixit is in Delhi. I know about the power crisis in Madhya Pradesh.
Now truly tell me apart from Idli Sambhar Dosa, Jayalalita, Chandrababu naidu, kaveri dispute what else do you guys know abt the south??
Did you know that the American Embassy in Chennai issues the most no of visas in the whole world?? Did you onw that the GDP of TN, Andhra and Karnataka together surpasses most states in India? Do you know that the literacy in South is 20 % higher than north - india average?

Hi V!
Stop this "WE" and "YOU" business, please! For God's sake!! Try to feel that you are an Indian.
Yes, I agree that many people do not know about South Indian Culture. This is mainly due to the language problem. That is why, the brilliant works in South India remain unnoticed. Can you deny the fact that except the four South Indian languages, all other eastern, western and northern languages are closer to Hindi?
Regarding ARR music, Swapan did not mean that it is too Southish. He tried to say that the music dominates the voices. But it is of course not entirely true. Initially, yes, this was true. But later ARR understood this deficiency and has given importance to voices.
Regarding Hindi films and Hindi Music, they are meant to represent India. Because Hindi is the most spoken language here. People from north, south, east and west go to Mumbai to work in Hindi films to get all India recognition. So, Hindi films are not the properties of the north Indians. They are supposed to be of all. So, people copy the Hindi film heroes and heroines. I do not say that this copying is good or bad. But it is a fact. You admit that or not?
Let me here mention that I have grown up in the Assamese and Bengali culture. I have seen the same kind of grievences among the Assamese and the Bengalis that I see among the South Indians for not getting all India recognition. But let me point out that it can never be possible. How can a regional thing compete with an all India thing in the popularity level? It is never ever possible.
So, grievences are there in every part of this country - not only in South India. But one should really understand why the situation is like this. Before understanding that, one should not undermine other cultures.
At least regarding Bengali culture, I can tell you there have been experiments in the music world to try South Indian kind of instruments. Right from Rabindranath, everybody has done that.
Hope I have clarified the situation to you.

Thanks for the email again.
I agree that most non-south languages are close to Hindi. But my brother I have nil Hindi knowledge but I still watched Lagaan.
Why? Because it is a good movie which deserves a single watching atleast!
Are ytou trying to tell me that Language is so constraining that even beautiful South Indian movies cannot be appreciated? I dont think so. I could watch Company and Lagaan and did not understand a word but could relate to the emotional aura of the film and I cheered for the cricket part so much!
Yes I also agree that in every part of the country they are greiving for recognition. But my friend, we in South India feel secluded! I atleast am personally pissed off that people like Kamal Hassan, Mohanlal, Mamooty, Mani Ratnam, AR Rahman, Ravi K Chandran, Santosh Sivan, Sreekar Prasad, Suresh Urs, VT Vijayan are not given the credit they rightly deserve.
Ofcourse the following people are recognised because they had something to do with hindi cinema.
Kamal Hassan - Ek duje eliye, Sadma etc.
Mani ratnam - Dil Se
AR Rahman - all his hindi albums
Ravi K Chandran - Dil Chahtha Hai, Koi Mil Gaya, Calcutta Mail
Santosh Sivan - Tehzeeb, Asoka, Fiza
Tell me, if these people did not do any of those Hindi films listed you think people inm the north would have given a damn abt them?? No!
I feel the same way about the low budget film-makers from Bengal! But atleast for bengali they are able to wipe their tears and enjoy several things since their culture is atleast more related to North indian mannerisms. But for us?? Why wouldn't we feel betrayed??
If we were really united and unbiased, why dint Kannathil Muthamittal or Mundo meri uphakyaan(sorry if i murdered the name) or Nizhalkuthu go to the Oscars??
The powerful and biased lobby sent a nasty trash like Devdas to the Oscars!
To give you a different perspective, USSR broke up into small countries and most of the youth in these countries hate it when you call them Russian. A guy from Georgia (former USSR) is proud that he can now speak Georgian and that the Russian cannot force their language and culture on them. Same thing is happening here in India. Hindi and hindi culture (which is great I agree) is forced on us. This is highly irritating sshit!

Hi V!
You just tell me what is the alternative? Sanskrit is almost a dead language. Many people do not understand Urdu also. Both these languages are richer than Hindi. So, can you choose Sanskrit or Urdu as a common language (I mean link language)? No! But you need a link language. So, Hindi is chosen. Because majority in the country understand this. At least six states speak Hindi as their main languages (Bihar, UP, Uttaranchal, HP, MP and Chhattisgarh). Is any other language spoken in so many states? No! Even after 190 years of British rule in India, English is still considered (general feeling) as a foreign language. So, English also can not be the link language. Therefore, Hindi is the only alternative.
Now, whatever happen in Delhi and Bombay get more importance because they are respectively the political and business capitals of the country. So, they represent India in some sense.
Yes, there are so many languages in India! But the degree of closeness to Hindi is different. When I joined a public sector job, we were told that we should learn Hindi by 5 years. Otherwise, there will be no increment. Now, while learning Hindi, I came across that as per closeness to Hindi, India is divided into 4 regions:
A-Region: Hindi speaking people.
B-Region: Punjabis, Gujaratis and Marathis.
C-Region: Assamese, Bengali, Oriya etc.
D-Regions: The South Indian states.
Now there were three levels of the course: Prabodh, Praveen and Pragya. Those in the D-region start from Prabodh. Those in the C-region start from Praveen and those in the B-region can start from Pragya. This is how, the degree of closeness (or rather degree of difficulty in understanding Hindi) is explained.
So, those who are more close to Hindi, enjoy more identifiability with Hindi culture. That is why, there are so many Punjabis and Gujaratis in Hindi films. It is a fact.
Let me tell you many South Indians like Hindi culture, Hindi language and Hindi films. So, there are so many South Indians engaged in various aspects in Bollywood. Kamal Hassan or ARR are not new or trend-setters. Even in fifties, we had a famous MD called C.Ramachandran in Bollywood. Because, people want recognition for their work. How can you ignore Hindi films?
After I joined that PU job, we had training in Chennai. There a Tamil gentleman explained the need of Rajbhasha (Hindi) to us in a lecture.
If you tell me about grievences, then every state has its disappointments. As regards Bengal, did Uttam Kumar, Soumitra Chattopadhyay or Hemanta Mukhopadhyay get any recognition for their hard work? At least from South, Nageshwar Rao and Shivaji Ganeshan got Dadasaheb Phalke. Correct me if I am wrong.
So, in a nutshell, performances at regional levels do remain unrecognised. We have to live with that.

It is funny to see a thread completely changed its course.
