  Aravindan: It seems that Mukkala takes most notes from Karaharapriya. I would guess that apart from a few accidentals, it is KHP.

  vaa kalaaba mayile is in charukesi. Pengalai nambaathe I think is a ragamalika.
  "vinnodum" looks like based on pentatonic scale.

  Kaana Inbam is Bageshri. Vinnodu is really intriguing. I also tend to think that this could be a pentatonic raga. Will post if I am able to figure this out.

  Hari has suggested that Vinnodum mugilodum is in natabairavi scale.
  anbAlE thEdiya is basically in Harikambodi scale, but occasional traces of ni3 are there.

  I had a chance to listen to "Putham Pudhu Poo Poothadho ennagalil" from Dhalapathi. If I remember right this song sounded similar to a hindi song featuring Reena Roy, Rishi Kapoor and Jitendra which goes like "Mere Saanson mein....Pehli pyar ki kushuboo...". There was an old programme on Music Asia "Raagon se filmon tak" in which this song is featured under Purya Dhanasri raag( Iam not good at Hindustani raag names and this some info I am not all too sure about ). Can somebody tell me the Carnatic equivalent of this raag or the raagam of this film song from Dhalapathi

  'paartha vizhi' by KJY from guna is supposed to be in kaanakaangi.but it seems very close in raga to
  kana kana ruchira a thyagaraja pancharathna krithi (composed in raga varaali i believe) .

  I find similarity between 'amudhE thamizhE azhagiya mozhiyE' and 'Neelakuyile unNoduthan pann paAdineyen'. Are these songs based on Rasikaranjani? Also 'Santhakkavigal paAdi varum' from Metti and 'Kadhal mayakkam' from Pudhumai Penn. What is the ragam for these songs?

  Songs in sivaranjani I can think of.
  
  1. Aval oru menagai, en abhimaana thaaragai (just the pallavi)
  2. Nalanthaana, Nalanthaana (thillana mohanambal)
  3. There mere beech mein (ek dhuje ke liye)
  4. Ezhisai geethamae (rasigan oru rasigai)
  5. Jaanae kahan gaye o dhin (mera naam joker)

  The Metti song and Puthumai Penn song are both based on Suddha Saveri.

  Purya Dhanshri's equivalent is Panthu Varali. Almost. The song "Putham Puthu Poo" is not based on Panthu Varali. I guess it is based on Hamsanandi. Correct me if I am wrong.

  I too thought that the Guna song "Paarta Vizhi" was Varaali. But you can hear Kalyani in that also. Maybe Bhaavani is correct.

  As for Paartha Vizli - It is NOT in BHAVAANI(from Mela 44(Bhavapriya), the prathi Madhyama of Todi), but in PAAVANI, Melakartha Number 41. I thought it was Gowli Panthu before. Varali is a Suddha Madhyama ragam, while Paavani is a Prathi Madhymam Ragam, hence the Kalyani sound you hear.

  I dont' know how much this is relevant to this thread. But i wanted to ask b'cos there are a lot of people in this thread with good knowledge about swarams and ragams.
  1. Is there a machine (or a s/w) that can identify a raga?
  During the last Dec' music season i saw the demo of a cd rom on carnatic music by sowmya and sasikaran. it can find ragas(only some - in the demo version). but u have to press the keys on the k/b displayed. i'm talking about a s/w which when inputted with a song (maybe digitalized), tells the raga.

  Haris: That sounds excellent. Where can I get hold of it? I guess that's how I learnt to identify Ragas, where I would play it on the keyboard, get the notes of the song, see the scale, then check it in a book, like Raga Pravaham. Therefore, if one plays the song, then it should be able to use the same thought process algorithm to identify the ragam. The only problem is that it will have limited scope, as some ragams can be identified by paryogams, liek Sri Ranjani and Baghayashree, which take the same scales, but are distinctly different to listen to, because of the paryogams.
