WhyNot, I guess Raghu is emphasizing the fact that he does not consider himself to be a HCARRF or a HCIRF because whenever a statement is made against ARR or against IR there have been, shall I say, certain characters, who dismiss those statements as "to be expected from a HCIRF " or "typical HCARRF" or something like that, and to mete out "punishment", at once respond with "IR is dead" or "ARR is a technician" etc.
One song from ARR I liked was "unai kaanavillaiyey netrodu" from Kadhal Desam.
IR - too many to mention. :) one that I absolutely loved was "naan paadum mouna raagam ketkavillaiya" from a Mohan starrer. SPB is king in this category, eh Raghu? :)

2 songs that fairly wring your heart, but you dont get to hear on the radio often (due to the sentiment) are:
vaanam thottu pona maanam ulla sami from thevar magan. this song is after Sivaji dies.
aarariro paadiyatharo - this song pictured on Pandiarajan (of all people!) is sung after his mother dies. Is it by SPB or KJY?

digression:
try "poongatrae poongatrae" from 'bharati kannamma'[Deva].one of the most unrecogonised gem of KJY-Deva-Vairamuthu.highly soulstirring.a high end melancholy .

Tigger;
"vaanam thottu pona maanam ulla sami from thevar magan" is indeed by SPB!, how could 4get such wonderful song :((
"aarariro paadiyatharo " is indeed by KJY, I am not sure wether the MD was IR or Not!
do u remember "Vaadatha rosapoo naa ondu paathen", by SPB?

Raghu - "aaraariro" is by IR..... i forgot the movie - it had Sivaji, Padmini, Pandiarajan etc in cast..... this movie had the song "Paazhaaya paadal ondru, pudhiaa raagaam ondru" - and i think it was by TMS... not sure though....

One of the greatest IR numbers is the Mahanadi title song..( "pongalum vandhadhu ..) . the melancholy mood of this song is brought out very well when bengali lyrics are set to this tune and then kamal sings the tamil version a little later (in the movie ) . The pain and anguish one feels is only best experienced . Hats off to Raja ..
Also, the following are my favourites :
Putham pudhu poo poothadhu ( thalapathi- it is a pity this song was not a part of the movie )
OOrai therinjikitten ( Padikaathavan - the interludes are so simple yet so moving )
Chittukku chella chittukku ( Nallavanakku Nallavan -KJY does a superb job )
Pattu VaNNA chelai kaari (Engeyo ketta kural ..One of Malaysia V's best )
Nilave Mugam kaattu ( Ejamaan)
Pogudhe Pogudhe ( Kdalora kavidhaigal- SPB in very good form)
Vaa Vaa anbe anbe ( Agni nakshtram)

raghu, dont give me ur condescending bs. if u can only recall 2 pathos numbers by ARR, then u r no authority to judge whether he does justice to them. If u have a preference for IR's pathos songs, which is not surprising if u like to sing, there is nothing wrong wit it.
but stop ur vimarsanam on other mds.

Aaraariro paadiyadhaaro is from Thaayikku Oru Thaalaattu by KJY.
Naan paadum mouna raagam is from Idhaya Koil.
Raasathi manasula - Raasavae Unnai Nambi - PS, Mano. Edho theriyaadha sogam:)
Paadi thirindha endhan thozhi - Kakkai Chiraginilae – SPB. Another "only SPB" kind of song.
Ooroora pogum indha udambu – Kakkai Chiraginilae – Sandhya. The charaNams convey the sadness quite well.
I am with bm on the Mahanadhi songs - Engaeyo thikku dhisai, Anbaana thaayai vittu, Thanmaanam uLLa and the bengali version between Kamal and SPB with different orchestrations. The lyrics, music and rendering reflect the right mood of the film and create a great feeling of sadness.

I know that vaanam thottu is by SPB - he was majsetic in that song. My doubt was re aarariro paadiyathaaro. The song (aarariro), and the lyrics were really great. Was it Vairamuthu? It really expresses the heart-rending emotions of a man whose Mom just died.

ROTFL, i am not expecting your response to this, if you have any Maanam and Mariyadhai, stay away from responding to me. If not, you are a SoriNaayi who can't resist the 'Itch'.
Who cares about a Peyer Illaatha Mundam (PIM) and porambokku naai? Not me!
You think you can say nasty things about me and have the last word? Forget it. I am made of much sterner stuff.
The only reason I am able to withstand the heat here and counter-argue, is because I know IR in and out, so mind your words.
Intha salasalappukku anjaathu intha singgam.
And try your uncultured, uncouth ways with some other naive creature and you may get away with it.
Eden
I repeat my statement more emphatically...in comparison to MSV, TKR, KVM (& those before Raja and after Raja till today), Raja is undisputed KING in this area...I'm game for discussion on this aspect if one is interested to quote song by song...which we can take apart and analyse!
It is 2.40 am and I am back after a heavy date. :)
Let me be clear about somenthing first. Answer me this and I will take up your challenge tommorow:
Are you saying that IR is the best in emotionally-charged songs?

kiru,//The song I am referring to is - rAsAvE unna naan enniththaan//-I was about to write about this song.I have just finished watching azhaghi. The song which was an emotional equivalent of this song is pattu cholli.we see the IR magic in full flow in this song.Raasave is,incidentally mentioned by SPS as her favorite songs among the songs she has sung.

ROTFL,
Coudn't resist the Itch?
Doctor's Advice : Scratching the Itch will only make it sore and make it worse.
Why don't you just focus on the topic and reveal IR inside out, rather than acting like you are the gaurdian of the IR-ARR skew in this thread.
'Intha salasalappukku anjaathu intha singgam' Keep out of these pseudo-Rajini ishtyle dialogues.

ROTFL, either way you take it, i.e. songs that are packed / charged with emotions or songs with emotional appeal...while the first one is more objective, the thread title may be encouraging more of subjective opinion. My answer is yes for both.
PS songs are quite sweet to hear (& may be musically good) but rarely touching the heart...

Let's do a test. Give me a list of five most emotionally charged songs of IR, and I will match them with non-IR songs. OK?
- From: tigger (@ 65.186.21.53)
on: Sat May 11 12:01:45 EDT 2002
Sabash, sariyaana poati!
Actually it will mean nothing because Eden will give a list, then ROTFL will give a counter list, then we will be back to square 1.
but please go ahead, it will at least be better than the petty remarks and juvenile comments that we often get to see.
Eden, if u do take this up, how about dividing the songs into categories (love failure, death, sister sentiment etc.)
I would like to see the "equivalents" for aarariro or vaanam thottu pona.
- From: yaaro (@ 195.93.50.172)

Match the following ROTFL-
Sangeetha jadhi mullai
Vaan uyarndha solaiyile
Azhaghu malarada
Mogham ennum theeyil
nirpadhuve nadapadhuve.
I seem to be doing all eden's work...

Paadaadha themmaangu naan paada vandhaenae - Poonthotta Kaavalkkaaran – SPB. His weeping-like rendition of the charaNams are really heart touching.
SaamigaLae samigaLae sondha kadha kaeLunga - En Purushanthaan Enakkumattumthaan – SPB.
Both have a low class, rustic feel.

Yaaro
Thanks but no thanks. I still remember the time when you claimed that IR brought folk music to TFM and when Gowri (where is she now?) gave a big list, you went around in circles (or disappeared?)
Neengal kuzhambi, naanum kuzhambi, padikkaravangalum kuzhambi, ezhuthuravangalum kuzhambi......, ithu thevaithaanaa Yaaro? :)
Tigger
Thanks for the optimism.
I have faith in Eden that he honestly believes that IR is the best MD in this genre of music. I also know that such stuff has been done equally well, if not better, before and after IR.
We will now try convincing the other on our beliefs, with literal examples.
At the end of the day, let us hope that one party discovers something and changes his opinion.
(And that one person is sure not gonna be me.) :)
