Anu Malik mentions about Ranjit s contribution in his rEdiff interview.
VIP s music sounded like Rehman s.But sounded better than HJ s current offerings.Ranjit is distinctly unlucky or he is comfortable playing the technical "sound"stuff.
Hariharan "Konashtai" brigas pada aarambikkum munn vantha paatu.HH seems to be drifting and fading away these days.He has another 3-4 years provided he sticks to MD s notes.
A good song with Simran looking stunning (as usual!).Mayilu Mayilu too had a great looking Simran with "Rambo"Ramba.

Saravanan, i think nerukku ner was the first movie of simran that got released and Once more was the first movie she had acted...
Correct me If I'm wrong..
VIP is still one of my fav techno albums in tfm...'minnal oru kodi' was the famous of all.. 'netru no no' is a good foot tapper with absurd lyrics..'vandhadhe luck vandhadhe' & 'mayilu mayilu mayillama' are decent songs..There is another small piece when Abbas gets introduced in jigu jigu colours with girls in US.... The infamous best song in this movie is 'Eechankaatula muyal onnu'... I think that song deserves a SOTD too.. I guess Ranjit did one more hindi movie (oh darling.. yeh hai india)...Ranjit could have provided some good numbers if he had stayed with TFM...

Thiru- I think Simran was supposed to be introduced in Poochoodava in which Abbas was the hero, but these other films were released before Poochoodava filally came out. However, I seem to remember seeing Simran first in Once More, then in VIP, and subsequently in NN. Not absolutely sure, though.

Saravanan, which movie had the 'Arimugam' title to it?? What I remember is vivek making fun of the new face as "irumaran, thumran, simran" in the cassette release of nerukku ner...

Song of the Day: niththam niththam en kaNNOdu from koottup puzhukkaL.

- Prabhu, you asked for it. Here's a great song sung by SPB, for his birthday today. MD is MSV, and MSV has also sung a portion of the song.
- Just listen to the mesmerising voice of SPB that makes this a great song. He does great sangathis, and pulls them off with nonchalant ease. MSV does a great bit at the start to start off the song too.
- Srikanth writes on this song:
guys,
I happened to watch the song being recorded. This was for a R.C.Sakthi film.
SPB learnt the tune in about 30 mins, but both of them was going on and on singing it in differet ways they could... a treat to watch....
finally ended up in singing what msv told him to do. SPB did not sing anything more than msv had composed.
Secondly msv's portions were not recorded during that time. When I asked msv about the ragam he commented yemen kalyani based.
Basically the sangathees in the song are very very good, just hear the variations in the song for each line, all of them are different....this is one of the reason I am a big fan of msv, :)surprising complicated tunes. , follow the tabla change overs also...interesting.There are many unheard gems from msv in 80's and 90's, one such song is sonthagalai vazthi sindhu paduven (SPB) for nilave malare, , rajathi (KSC) in rajathi kalyanam ,there is also a good song in thali thanam..by vanij,
i am sure no one would have heart it. :)

bb-thanks! Great song.
Koottuppuzhukkal-1987 was RC Shakthi's attempt (perhaps based on some story) at portraying the everyday happenings in the lives of different families living in 'portions' of the same house- Raghuvaran, Amala, Chandrasekar, Saritha, Y Vijaya, Deepa and others formed the cast.
Raghuvaran gave a heartwarming performance of an unemployed graduate and brought out the despair of his lot so well. This song has TS Raghavendar starting to hum something, which Raghuvaran picks up and continues--
Other songs in Koottuppuzhukkal were 'Inaikku vandha nenappilaey'-KS Chitra , and 'Indha malligaippovukku kalyanam'-PS.

I remember Srikanth sharing with me that he heard SPB say to MSV that this was one of the best songs he had sung in five years. Srikanth comes close to defining MSV's magic, as complicated tunes.
But "complicated" colors this as a predetermined effort to do something theoretical and complicated. MSV is farthest from it. He is a true artist with rarefied aesthetics. He has confided to friends who interviewed him that he never relies predominantly on raagams for his tunes. For MSV, sandham comes first, then the raagam guides or further defines it.
Like any great artist, MSV allows for spur of the moment additions and improvisations while recording a song. Nothing is set in stone until it's recorded. People who have watched his recordings or read interviews about his work habits can attest to this. MSV songs continue to enchant for their unregimented structure and subtle surprises. "Nitham Nitham" is a crowning achievement for any MD, especially for an artist in his waning years. And as such, the song should be savored, shared, preserved, and celebrated.

Aha BB,
Ithanai naal kaakaendiyurundhadhu. I have complained many times that this song link is not working in dhool.com. Im a big fan of this song, its simplicity in its setup with minimal instruments and SPB singing is so soothing and attractive.
Can you get me this song I would like to save it somewhere

bb - Gem, indeed.
udhaya, was it not valee? Saravanan is summoned for the final verdict :)
udahya - you summed up the qualities of MSV nicely. His improvisations are magic. IMHO, he is one artist in tamil who comes close to the spirit of Jazz. He also never believed in conjuring big instruments when the song does not demand it. Listen here! he is adhereing to the basics. This song has to be purely lifeted by the tonal qualities of the singer - and that is it. MSV lets SPB go wild with his magical voice. Anyone else would have decimated this song with brihas and 'konashtai'. I very much like the way SPB gives those microsecond pauses in the right places. (Not to undermine the great interludes).
Candidates for SOTD from later MSV.
1. KaatrukkeNNa veli (despite my limited pref. to SJ, I rate this as one of her best ever). Great orchestration.
2. The only duet MSV sung with a female voice (Guess what?).
3. Enakkoru kaathai irukkindraaL (ellorum nallavarE, MSV duet with SPB)
4. kanakkaaNum kaNkaL mella (SPB, Saritha)
5. thErOttam anandha shenbaga... (SPB, nUlvEli)
6. mounaththil vilayadum (BMK, ibid)
7. ettuth thikkum (don't remember the movie, Naagesh's son was the hero. SPB and great naadhaswaram).
8. Gowri manOhari (avan, avaL athu)
9. intha vanjimagaL oru UthaappU (don't remember the movie)
10. Sugamana cinthanaiyil (Taxi Driver, Jeyashankar's 100th, SPB/SJ)
Janani, BTW, has an intricate number in "konjum malar manjam" - that was the last major attempt to revive the fortunes of MSV on the decade dominated by IR.
Does anyone know what was the movie he last scored?
And, and a major request to anyone reading this; there is an experimental album by MSV, purely instrumental; I will be grateful if anyone can let me listen this again - I have been searching for 15+ years. For those who can recall, ilangai oliparappuk kUttuththaapanam - TS2's great pongum pUmpunal's theme music is taken from this album. Traces of item 1 above, (kattRukenna...) can also be spotted in this album. Please, please, anyone...

yvs mani- Yes, Amala too ;-)
OISG: Yes, TS Raghavanedar called himself Vijayaramani for a brief while- especially when he composed music for a couple of films- While one was the unreleased Ninaivil Oru Malar ("Kalyanan Sorgangal'-KJY-VJ), I think the other was Yaagasaalai-1981 ('Oru rojappo sirikkirathu-TSR & co). He is more remembered for his roles in Sindhu Bhairavi and Vaidehi Kaathirundhaal (Remember the jathis in 'Azhagu malaradaa'?). He was a good singer too-Rememmber'Aathukkulla yelelo athimaram, agilagila' from Senthoorappoavae.
GKV was the MD for Piriyavidai.
Srikanth- I don't know abt. Super Boy, but all other films you mention are from the 80s.Yes, they have some great songs.
Udhaya: Moongililai kaadugalae is from Pennmani Aval Kannmani, Music by S-G.
