Sriks..howdy !!..I just listened to your compositions oru mutham, the thiruppaavai song and the 80s in chennai. I am just a music novice ..but I can tell you..man..you have come a long way..These songs show a kind of maturity and confidence that it is almost masterly.
The flow and orchestration in the oru mutham song is very impressive. Did you play the drums for this ? Very energetic playing..You are getting youngder day by day ..my friend !!! Even though, at times, I could not follow the lyrics that well.I think this song beats quite a lot of the recent film songs in appeal and content.
The thiruppaavai song..with its understated percussion and subtle harmony in the background is a real class. This clearly shows good quality does not have to mean complicated orchestration.
The 80s in chennai ..a fun song. And you wrote the lyrics !!!! Wow..you are a complete musician..I feel a music composer should have atleast a bit of lyricist in him and a lyricist a bit of a composer in them..If one can string notes together..they should be able to string some words together as well..Even though there are direct references to raaja, his song ek, dho, theen ..how appropriate of you to use a bass guitar backing for the rhythm.. that is 80s like I know man..Also, a nice touch to end with the tamil translation in the end.
Congrats guy..I hope you get more commerical opportunities and more people get to hear your work and possibly help prop up the sagging quality in the industry.

Anand,
Thanks for your, how should one say, outright straightforward (?) comments on my music. For a moment I felt I should stop composing serious music :))
Just kidding.

Kiru, thanks! for you kind words.
yes i did play thr drum parts using handsonic.
in 80'S I mic'ed the bass guitar from a bass amp, so it is more round and crisp.

please do not get me wrong. The piece you posted was quite decent and mature, but it wasn't "serious music"...and thats what I meant.
By serious music, I dont just mean masterpieces or anything, but stuff that can stand by itself rather than just being a background music for some slide presentation.
I think I have heard your work a while ago in mp3.com and remember liking it. So let us hear the good stuff from you.
best

Divakar, thats really cooool. I liked the way the drums entered. Could you please tell a little abt ur gear, like what instruments u use, and how u record them. Most of the instruments in ur scores sound natural, like the violin, piano etc. I remember u saying that u played one of ur tunes on an Ibanez and some famous violin brand. Als please tell abt the way u go abt to record them.

Sam,
Thanks for listening!
I recorded my Piano Passages from Yamaha Clavinova CLP Piano, cant miss the Bright bell like tone of Yamaha...often called that way.
Guitar I did record from Ibanez before but this piece uses a strat thru a fender amp with a Lush Clean setting Without much processing....i tend to use pickups on Violins(bridge transducers) and Acoustic Guitars(Soundhole pickups) as well to compensate for miking conditions....
Recording possibilities are limitless....I am just experimenting with a few of them...
I know this doesnt answer anything specific ...so feel free to get back with any specific questions you might have...
Good Luck Sam!

Sam:
All your sequencing efforts are praise-worthy. I think you once mentioned that you sequence on PSR-550 which is a nice but not a high end keyboard. To bring out such a good quality in this keyboard, you need to be really talented. You also have a good ear for details. This song and "voohula pallakilo" are two of the most beautiful songs that R.P.Patnaik has created. It is a beautiful song and well done by you and your friend. Keep up the good work.

Hi All,
Was digging into my old archives - done in Impulse Tracker / MS-DOS environments, and I stumbled upon a Tamil composition - penned and composed by me. Just did a rewrite of it in FLStudio and have posted it on the internet. Not much of high-funda stuff, but good for easy listening. I have sung the song, so the tamil maybe a little "off".
Please give a listen to it, and your valuable opinions are required.

Thanks for listening and I appreciate you taking time to write about it as well....
I came up with the Song name "Dance With Me" only when releasing at ic-musicmedia, so its not a dance ballad perse...but I remember seeing some body movements at the party...not sure what they were now...may be they were just leaving!
Anyway thanks once again for listening...

Sam I heard your sequencing.....very nicely done! I do hear a background noise goin' on thru out the song...I am not able to say precisely what instrument that is but some kinda choir or strings. Since it only produces a constant, Sustained hum like noise(i am sure its not the mic) you should probably cut it out when the voice starts. If you're tryin' to harmonize you may wanna play the normal strings instead ofcourse with some chordal variations....

Happy to join so many friends composing, playing , recording music...
I have recorded few instrumentals of Ilayaraaja songs with complete prelude, interlude etc. using 8 track sequencing. I want to get some feedback from you, friends.
Pls let me know how and where I can upload those? Let me first try one...
Thanks in advance.

nice work. altho I am not the biggest fan of Indian film music, I was impressed by the almost professional sounding job you have done with a psr-550 (are you really sure ? :-)...just kidding). Frankly this is the most professonal sounding (in the indian film music sense) piece I have seen on these pages.
Now, I wonder how good this will sound if you had a $3000 keyboard !
keep it up man.
(I was going to add that you should probably orchestrate your own works as well)
