Shibu,
You are talking about 'Prema Yaathuraikku Brundhaavanmu Nandavanamu Yetho' song. Vamsi said in one interview that he wanted IR to mix that song with his own composition. What a song! I am searching the web but could not. BTW Detective Nadadha had gem of songs (terribly wasted in the movie though).

One more similar type of experiment was done in another Vamsi's film Called "Sri Kanaka Mahalakshmi recording dance troup". As the name tells, this troup is a dancing troup which gives road shows dancing to old songs. Vamsi is known for his great innovation and experiments, Uses the old telugu songs, adds in between the original songs. That was too good from IR-Vamsi combo. Vamsi asked for it and IR gave it. SPB did an excellent job singing those songs.

KS,one question:
is the "Koththa pittaro koko.." from Detective Narada came in early 90s or before i.e even before thamizh's Seevalapaeri paandi? Seevalapaeri paandi came in early 90s, i think.
Why i am asking is, in an interview the MD of Seevalapaeri paandi - Mr. Aadhityan claimed that he is the first MD to try a song with "natural" animal voice (or so).

on: Thu Jul 19 12:19:31 EDT 2001
Kupps,
Raajangahm says the yr. is 1992. IR has used natural animal voices even much before but most of the times he uses various instruments to mimic them.
However, do we have any doubts about IR doing such things even before!!:-) Atleast, i'm sure he has done it before...using sounds that mimic dogs, cats, hens, donkeys, cuckoos etc. Most of the times it has been cuckoos, hens and donkeys (in that order if feel). In the album "Nothing But Wind", in the beginning of the piece "Nothing But Wind", he has synchronised the sounds of kozhi and kezhudhai which sound great...innoru chinna experiment!!!:-))

Recenly I was listening to the song "Valve ..Mayama...verum paniya...kadum" by sasirekha (after a very long time),from the silim "Gayathri".At the end of the second interlude there are two or three beats of miruthangam with echo effect.
In the whole song, miruthankgam was not used as a percussion instrument anywhere. Could anybody (gurus) guess why only few beats just before the second stanza.
Both the interludes just reflects the whole mood of the song. It's an amazing song.

i was listening to Oomai nenjin sondham idhu oru unmai sollum bandham from Manidhanin Marupakkam. Throughout the song mrithangam and one more stick like sound making instrument(sorry i don't know its name) were used as percussion support for the great voice of KJY. the use of mridhangam was peculiar and splendid. i have only a old mono-tape player, in that itself the usage was audible. all throughout the song mruthangam was having, what i say, "two tang tang sounding taeka" touch. thats all. wow it was splendid.

first person to use stereo
first person to utilise computer in music arrangements
first md to effectively mix wcm with various indian music forms
radically different use of chorus
radically different approach to bgm
if you look at individual musical efforts:
use of a female voice to recite the vedas in vedha ganam
experimental modern concerto in raajaparvai
avarohanam only song and changing a thyagaraja song tune in sindhu bairavi
first to use a proper symphony orchestra for bgm
first md to do a solo recital in hard core classical concert
first (and only) indian md who can write a complete musical piece straight from his mind onto paper!
can anyone add to my list?

made janaki sing as a child, oldie..
spb's song in keladi kanmani..
controversial use of maangalyam thandhunaanena -as a bgm in engeyo keeta kural-what a ruckus it created at that time!
completely unorthodox tuning of bharathiyar songs for bharathi-including first time adaptation of a hitherto unheard song for first time(nirpadhuve..)

I remember IR's interview in DD and when asked abt "muchu vidamal paatu" he chuckled and said that spb had already sung such kind of a song in IR music and since that wasnt advt. no one knew abt it. That song was then played. Does any one remember that song. I forgot it!

Nope I think "avalukenna azhakiya mugam" was stereo song. I think MSV did stereo befoe. I also think "anna kili" was stereo.( i dunno if the cassttes were stereo then or gramaphone recds I will inquire though)
#2 wcm also I guess was done by MSV. KB one of the reluctant convereters from MSV era to the IR era mentions this in his interview.

yes! I have seen such a posting in this DF before.
where is the evidence for this. Is it "kelvi gnanam " or is there any manifestation of this.

bharath,
i have seen this!!..he does write his scores, he usually writes his backgrounds..pretty quickly.
belive me well tranined western classical musican can calculate the score in their mind, they ofetn tell they hear it in their brain. if possible, check with any musician who has worked for IR.
Priya was first stereo track in tamil, some credit goes to Kjy also.
During msv or RDB times, tracks were recorded as mono tracks only, geniune stereo in tamil was priya. Priya was the first attempt, for example if you close the right channel (atleast in the CD i have), you will not hear the guitar parts. It was hard panned to rigth.
looks like your "gnanam " is limite :)

Sort of moderate proof at the end of this comments by Maniratnam. Also this fact is very well known long time ago(when I was in 7th class ). Not so sure about the first Indian considering the rich musical heritage of India, may first modern music composer(ie after 1900's).
Raja and Rahman!
Illaiyaraja is absolutely prolific. He is an amazing talent who believes that the music written down by him should be stuck to totally. And then it is recorded which is just a matter of execution.
Rahman does the opposite. He has the music in his mind, and uses every musician as an artiste, probably because he has been an instrumentalist himself. he tries to extract something extra from every one of his musicians as well as his playback singers. He believes in their addition input.
Rahman improvises while Illaiyaraja has every little detail chalked out. Like Rahman I try to improvise while leaving others free to make their additional contribution...though I wish I could be like Ilaiyaraja and work out everything on paper."

I know that there are serious doubts if stereo players were actually available to the general public in msv rdb times. I am not contesting mono tapes being avaiable but I am seriously contesting "mono recording"
//"for example if you close the right channel (atleast in the CD i have), you will not hear the guitar parts"//
the example is a good one !but doesnt address my point! I was not trying to say anything about music composed to exloit the stereo technologies avaiable. But only trying to underscore KB's mention that "they went ahead and recorded it stereo even though the tech was not avaiable"
Again I am not hurrying in like "munthrikottai" to discredit IR. I am very circumspect abt this point But just thought it was worth mentioning anyway! Not taking away the fact that "priya" stry belonged to IR.
//"The song is "Kanmaniyae Kathal Enbathu Karpaniyo" from Arilirinthu Arubathuvarai"//
for what this example was given! FOr the musical score being handwritten!
