Ravi: Thanks for your prompt response. With your suggestion, I am starting this new thread.
Hi Friends,
I'm Nirupama from Vancouver, Canada. Since I visit this site quite often and have found out your passion for tamil film music, I thought this bit of information will be interesting for you.
With a help of a friend who hosts a hindi show on radio, I started my own radio show for tamil film music. Since there are no other tamil radio shows in Vancouver, I thought tamils living here might appreciate this. But to my surprise, I received many calls from non-tamils(White Canadians, etc) inquiring about this strange yet wonderful eastern(or fusion, rather) music. The show is only three-weeks old, and every week I've been getting these phone calls. I've described this type of music to the best of my abilities, but still their curiosity is overwhelming.
Some of their comments in their own words are:
"Hey, I love this music! What is it called?" , "This is great! Where is it from?" , "I like traditional Indian music, but what you're playing sounds very interesting!" Some even asked me for the film and song names.
In order to find out more about their music preferences, I tried playing songs from different periods, styles etc. What do guys think about this? Any guesses on whose music style or what type of tamil film music they like?? I'll talk more about that later.....

Thanks guys for all the suggestions! I will try playing the ones that I have from your lists.
Udhaya,
Do you think I could include the following:
1. Azhage Azhagu Devadhai(Raja Paarvai)
2. Nee Oru Kadhal Sangeetham(Nayakan)
(I don't have this in good recording)
3. Saravanabhava(Kadhala Kadhala)
Srinath,
You're right! I do think we're expecting a little too much from them already! TFM or Indian film music in general is very unique and different as it covers music styles from east and west. It will certainly take them some time to get used to this concept.

Nirupama,
You go girl, play whatever you want. You know what you're doing, we're just giving you suggestions. #1) Azhage Azhagu is a great number by IR, no doubt, but it has strong Jazz interludes--the only classification for this and many of IR's songs are that they are Ilayaraajaesque. So, if you want more traditional, classical songs to start out with, play this one later. I would recommend not playing any sub-par recordings on air, so skip # 2 as well. 3 should be fine. KR has done much superior stuff in "Veesum Kaattrukku" and "Konjum Manjal" from Ullaasam though these two aren't very traditional either. (I have trouble swallowing the idea that KR composed these, could it be? Or is IR leaving his compositions all over the house?)

If you want to try Ilayaraajaesque(as Udhaya christened) numbers, I would suggest some
1. Kootathile koyil pura - Idhayakkovil
2. Ninnukori varnam - Agni natchathiram
3. Mandram vandha thendralukku - Mouna Raagam
4. Kalyana maalai kondadum penne - Pudhu Pudhu Arthangal
5. Maalayil yaaro - Chatriyan
6. Thendral vandhu theendu podhu - Avatharam
7. Enakku oru raasa venum - KadavuL
8. Meetadha oru veenai - Poonthottam

Udhaya:
IR leaving his compositions all around the house ? :-)))) I think you are being rather uncharitable to KR. Or are you saying that goos songs without IR's name still have a chance of clicking with the audience ? Even assuming KR were shameless enough to lift his father's tunes, would IR allow a sham of this scale ? He is supposed to an 'egoist' after all :-))
Nirupama:
Another classical number that I like is "Ther kondu sendravan" from Ennakull Oruvan. I came across that song again after a VERY long time and am relishing that lovely tune again. Perhaps you could consider playing that ?

Srinath,
That was pure (well, not so pure) speculation, guy,I surely wish him no ill. But somehow, I find huge gaps in the complexity of KR's compositions. The said pieces from Ullaasam sound totally different and dangerously close to IR in its elaborate interludes that are sudden departures from the tune. When I compare that to the stuff in Kaadhalaa Kaadhalaa, I just shake my head and go "how?" Maybe it is unfair, but it just begs the question. With Yuvan Shankar Raja's stuff, I have no doubts that he created them. Call it selective bias, I can't explain it or defend it.

Udhaya,
Thanks for the clarifications. About KR, if you're seeing any resemblence in his style to IR's style, it probably means that he is just as influenced by his father like most other music directors. He may not have proved his worth yet, but I strongly feel that he has the potential to make it big. He might be just exploring and searching for a way to get everybody's attention. Please remember that some of his excellent work in the past have not been credited to him. eg. background orchestration for "Thendral vandhu theendum podhu, Ninaikindra Pathaiyil, even the song Netru Vandha Kaatru". All the above were released under IR's name. I'm not sure why though.

irfan,
Thank you for some wonderful suggestions. I think I will play Kootathile koyil pura & Ninukkori varnam(the latter will be an interesting example of IR's classical interpretations).
Srinath,
I'm sorry I don't have the song, Ther kondu Sendravan. I will try to get that sometime in the future. Thanks.

udahya,
I feel more resemblence in YSR songs to IR than
KR. I am taking aravindan as an example. Both the
popular songs in that film 'all the best' and
'eera nila' ( close resemblence to thuvakkam inge
in mahanathi) sounds so IRish.

Hi,
Yesterday's show was a grand success in terms of the responses from Tamils. I didn't hear from any non-indians, though:-(( But the semi-classical numbers have brought back a lot of listeners to the show. Some of them expressed how much they liked a particular song, or how much they enjoyed carnatic-based music. Some of the songs that I played are Manthiram Ithu(Aavarampoo), Keeravani Iravilei(Padum Paravaigal)-for this song I tried to give an idea about the characteristics of the raga Keeravani, Endhan Nenjil(Kalaignan), Thendralathu(Antha 7 Natkal) and many more. I can also see myself improving as a DJ. So I take this period as experience and hopefully we'll get more responses from others as well. BTW, am I allowed to post about the Tamil audience here? Please let me know.
Next week's show is going to feature some solos by Chitra under different MDs. That means Deva, too?:-(( Well, I know what song I shouldn't play - Pulveli Pulveli from Aasai:-))))

"un mArbil" from "NinaithEn vandhAi" is also a great Chitra solo... MD'd by Deva... is there a pattern here :-)

Ravi,
Thanks. Isn't that song, Unakkena Piranthava, a duet with S.P.B?
Bharat,
I thought "Un marbil" was a another great lift from a Maragathamani composition. But then again, isn't that true for most of Deva's songs?:-))

Nirupamam: There is a solo version in the cassette. There is also another solo by Chitra in that movie, whose origin is difficult to trace. :-) Prob. Ramki can help.

Hi Guys,
Well, where do I start? It's been a fairly long time. The last two weeks went really well. First week was on Chitra's solos under different MDs. Chitra's seems to be a popular choice among the young and old and she is becoming more versatile these days. One guy, a North-indian, inquired if I were playing Malayalam songs. I thought it was Chitra that prompted that query but I was wrong. He had just recognized the South-indian flavour in the music and assumed it was malayalam.
Queries(eg.what is this music etc.) regarding TFM still continues with the non-indians.
This week I wanted to try something different, so I tried experimenting with mixing tracks. I wanted to combine the solo versions of "Manam Virumbuthe" and make it sound like a duet. I knew that the timing was very crucial for an exercise like this, so I practiced once and it came out very well. But, when I tried it out on the show the UK version was off by about 1 second:-)) I somehow managed to keep the timing differences to the minimum. When I asked a few listeners on what they thought about this, none of them said that they recognized the timing difference. It is amazing to know that something that was so obvious to me went unnoticed. Good for me:-)) This is also one reason why these mediocre songs become so popular these days. People just don't pay enough attention to them:-)) What do you guys think about this?

Hi,
I've been searching for some Kannadhasan songs and I have written a list of songs in the Stats thread. If anybody knows anything about those songs please contribute in that thread. Your assistance is very much appreciated.
