  Hi,
  
  There is a music piece in Thillana Mohanambal in Nagaswaram called Western Note or something composed by GS Mani Iyer??? Sivaji & co plays it to the public outside Zamindar's bungalow.
  
  Can somebody tell me the background of the musician and why he composed in western. Is this piece based on some raga?

  Venkatesh : The piece is Note-by Muthuswamy Dikhshithar(of carnatic-trinity).

  I have heard that there is a raaga that makes plants grow faster. It is also beneficial to autistic children: it makes them calm down and concentrate better. Is that raaga charukeshi? Thanks.

  went to your site on rahman..its good.
  Thought that some of the ragams were notmentioned correctly.I am not 100% sure like
  
  Ghanan Ghanan (Lagaan) is Megh malhar,
  Nila Kagirathu(Indira) is Behag.
  Snehitanhe(alaipayuthey) has saramthi and mohanam in it.

  Also, that "western notes" was heavily popularised by Madurai Mani Iyer who is respected as the "swara king" of those days in karnatic arena. I think he was very famous even among madras rickshaw pullers of those days of madras. Even the famous chowdaiah of violin was not able to second Madurai Mani Iyer(MMI) when he(MMI) was in his full swing. Such was his fame and ability. He died due to lecoderma(echuse me if misspelt). Incidentally, G.S.Mani Iyer is also from Madurai but *not* called as "swara king". G.S. Mani iyer worked for MSV-TKR for sometimes also though basically he is also a karnatic vocalist.
  
  This is all based on what I heard from my family elders.

  1) "nee dhan en desiya" - hansadhwani+ Desh or Bilwala + Yaman Kalyani???
  
  2)Azhage sugama - Jaijaivanti
  
  3)Adhisayam thirumanam -Naattai+Shahana+Kalyani

  'Azhage sugama' sounds to me like Sahana.
  
  'Nee thaan en' starts like mohanam, but then it takes shankarabharnam notes. In charanam, it takes 'G2' as well, giving a shade of shivaranjani. may be another aviyal. PRTTS (oops...!) experts confirm.

  raga Jaijaivanti, known as the paramel praveshaka raga (the raga that falls between the change of two prahars). It has both the shudhha and komal Nishad and Gandhar, with a special emphasis on Rishabh

  I was trying out the songs from Udhaya geetham and Idhaya kovil yesterday. let me see if i can get some help in confirming my thoughts.
  
  I noticed that some songs from these movies fall in yamuna kalyani scale with 'G2' peeping in (sounds really wonderful there!). Is there really a raaga with this combination or just an attempt to add beauty ? here are the songs:
  
  1. Yaar veetu roja
  2. Paatu thalaivan paadinal
  
  Also, can experts confirm these songs too ?
  
  3. Paadu nilave - Mohanam + shades of Shivaranjani and Vaasanthi.
  4. Sangeetha megam - Sindubhairavi
  5. Ennodu paatu paadungal - Sankarabharanam scale
  6. Maane thene - Sindubhairavi
  7. Idhayam oru kovil - Mohanam with Ni3, Ga2 and R1 peeping in. (some sites claim this as mohanam)
  8. Koothathile kovil pura - Khamas
  9. Naan paadum - not sure. looks like shivaranjani with the dominant usage of Ni2.
  10.Vaanuyarntha solai - Sindubhairavi

  In the musicmagazine review of PP, a comment for the title track goes like 'Towards the end one of the voices sings some raga Sahana phrases.' I doubt this, can anyone confirm this?

  IMO, one of the lilting tunes, but the interludes are very much different from the main soul of the song. It seems to be set in yeman kalyan.
  
  2. Paatu thalaivan paadinal
  
  Another superb number from IR-SPB, very innovative meter. once again in yeman kalyaN.
  
  3 Paadu nilave - Mohanam + shades of Shivaranjani and Vaasanthi - yes
  
  4. Sangeetha megam - Predominantly natabhairavi with a lot of anya swaras
  
  5. Ennodu paatu paadungal - aviyal
  
  6. Maane thene - Sindubhairavi -yes
  
  7. Idhayam oru kovil - Mohanam with Ni3, Ga2 and R1 peeping in. (some sites claim this as mohanam) - yes
  
  8. Koothathile kovil pura - I think I had a discussion on this with IR once. bahudaari nu sonna maadhiri nyaabagam.
  
  9. Naan paadum - see 10
  
  10.Vaanuyarntha solai -
  
  I need to say a few words about this scale which Raja has used extensively. I find it difficult to call it any raga that I know. This is a scale which belongs to HIM and HIM ONLY. SOngs which fall into this category are:
  
  (1) Chinna chinna vaNNak kuyil
  (2) andhi veyyil ponnudhirum - uLLAdakkam - MalayaLam
  (3) naan paadum mouna ragam
  (4) vaanuyarndha sOlaiyile
  (5) en vaanile orE veNNilaa
  (6) starting of senthoorap poove
  
  It seems to mix these ragas:
  
  (1) keeravaNi
  (2) gowri manohari
  (3) natabhairavi
  (4) sHaNmuga priya
  (5) aabheri
  (6) shrotasvini
  
  "elllaththaiyum sEndhu oru kalakku kalakku. adhula oru 50 gram edu" - appdinnu solra madhiriyaana scale.

  (2) pon vaanam panneer thoovudhu

  first 2 songs are in GM. But all the 9 songs have almost the same feel.
