Off late, K S Chitra has become one of my hot favourites amongst female singers. Her voice has a unique and rich timbre which I really enjoy. lets take this opportunity to discuss songs by her in Tamil and various other languages - Malayalam, Kannada and Telugu. Her songs sung under the tutelage of Ilayaraja, AR Rehman, Ravindran et al are really excellent, moreover she has a delightful classical touch as is seen in her rendition of "alaipayuthe" and the Sindhubhairavi songs. She has done a great deal of Hindu and Christian devotional albums in Southern languages...lets discuss those. My favourite Chitra song so far remains "gopika vasantham" and her duet with SPB in the Telugu
movie Swathikiranam. What a voice and that sharpness!
So please, lets discuss her songs!! :-)
(If this topic has been discussed in full detail - similar to the Vani Jairam thread - please post a link to it). Otherwise lets make this an encyclopedia of KSC songs.

When people mention songs can u say what language it is from please. It would be much easier. I listen to tamil songs by KSC. She has sung so many songs and is still so popular choice for music directors today. Does anyone know what hindi songs she has sung. I would preferably like to know which good songs she has sung in Hindi in the last 10 years and what films they are from. Thank You

Thanks a lot to you and to RajaG for sending in the mp3 promptly. I just listened to the whole song. What can I say, I am just stunned and it will take me sometime to come out of this trans. What a clarity in the continuous roller-coaster gamakams!! Oh, I am love with her voice, yet again! She has such an amazing talent. This is a treat to her fans, truly.
I am definitely going to learn this song! Learning this song can be such a good training exercise to any budding singer (like me!).
Thanks guys again.

Another thing: This song reminds me constantly of "Divaswapnam" from Devadaasi, also composed by Sharath.

...and, IMO, KSC beats UK quite easily comparing the two. (can't stop comparisons, can we?)
After hearing this song, I sincerely feel that TFM has terribly under-utilised her capabilities and the only way for her to express her true prowess is in classical & semi-classical stuff.
My knowledge is limited. Is there any other comparable song ever sung in film music by KSC or any other artist? other than the gamaka gymnastics that KJY does in Sindhu Bharavi, Bharatham, etc.. I can't think of any.

I agree, she beats UK easily. I don't mind doing the comparison here. I don't know about film-songs, but Janaki had released a casette on
Thyagaraja keerthanas accompanied by a nadaswaram a few years ago which had unbelievable feats in gamakas. Also, I am sure you can find a few old songs of Ghantasala, PS and Janaki (in Telugu, that is) which had a good dose of vocal feats.

Devadai Vamsam (Snehitiye) is a duet by KSC and sujatha and Radhani Manathil from the same film is another song in which KSC is one of the female singers. Both the songs are one of my favourites in recent times.
My favourite solo songs (Tamil) by KSC have to be: -
- Naan Oru Sindu (Sindu Bhairavi)
- Kannalame (Bombay)
- Thathithom (Azhagan)
- Kannamoochi and Yenge Yennuthu Kavithai(Kandukkonden Kandonden).
My favourite KSC duet songs with a male singer are : -
- Then merku (Karuthamma) with Unnkrishnan,
- Theendai (En Swase Katre) with SPBala
- Nee Katru (Nilave vaa) with Hariharan
- Malargale (Love Birds) with Hariharan
- Thoonda Thoonda (Kallazhagar) with Krishnaraj
Has KSC ever a sung a duet with other female playback singers?

Arun,
Yep, with all the other leading playback singers, except I think Harini and Sadhana Sargam. Maybe she has in some recent number, but I haven't listened to a lot in the last couple of years so don't know.

Many singers lose thier voice with age or some singers voices don't age, but I think KSChitra sounds younger these days. especially in Solla Than Ninaikeeran (Kadhal Sugamanathu). What is her latest tamil song?

I have two audio casettes by Janaki which are titled "S.Janaki, Vocal, Thyagaraja krithis" and "S.Janaki, Vocal". That's all there is as part of the title. Both were released by HMV. One of them has Reethigowla, Kalyani, Hamsadhwani and Ragamalika all accompanied by Nadhaswaram and thavil. The second casette has about 12 krithis in various popular/rare ragas. Both have her picture on the cover. I don't know if this information helps you.

Kaumudi, I have one CD titled "carnatic classic S.Janaki". That CD has the above mention raga's like Reetigoula,Hamsadwani,Aahiri,Ragamaalika and Santa Kabir's Bhajan and some Notes(western type of Mudurai Mani Iyer's)all accompnied by Nadaswarm and tavil. I think you might have the same cassete. The titles are different I think.

Wow Kaumudi! This was news to me. I did not know SJ is adept at pure classical too. Have the other female singers released such classical tapes as well? There is one by PS with BMK but its basically a tape of bhajans. Gorgeous they truly are!

KSC has sung in Student Number 1, Ennai Kadhalikka...
I think now a days she is losing her voice . Her voice in the starting of the song sounds very screachy.

You are talking about the same casette that I am talking about.
AV
Yes, I was pleasantly surprised to discover these two tapes. And Janaki was so fluid with her gamakams and all that, it was quite enviable to listen to her. But I think, the purists would probably go "Hmm..let's see if we can accept". To be fair, I have to say that there were a couple (yeah, very few) of cinematic expressions in a song or two. But it is a very nice album every SJ fan (or every music fan) should possess.
Pranav
You are most welcome.

Jag, Kaumudi, MS......,
Some truly divine devotional and classical songs by Chitra from http://www.Malayalavedhi.com .
Please do listen to these songs, Chitra's voice is sheer gold. (Do a search on "KSC")
1) Radhika Krishna...Kannanam (Based roughly on Darbari Kanada?)
2) Ramayanathinte BhaLa Sthuthi YUDHA KAANDAM
- a divine shloka recitation with minimal accompaniment
3) Seetha Darshanam
4) Shabareesha Shambu Thanaya - What a divine song executed with such precision by KSC! Which raaga is this based on?
5) ShaiLa Sudhe Ennude (this has a composition very similar to a beautiful devotional song by Vani Jairam)
6) Shri Ganpathim Bhaje (watch out for the syncopations at the end, and the alternation between long-winded sargam passages and wordings, and a final evocative taan)
7) ThinkaL KaLaadharane
8) VishwaMohini Jagdambike Devi
9) ViLva MaLayil - What a song! Though I wish they hadnt put in a chorus in between the stanzas.

11) Unarunaru Unni Kanna
13) Vaakacharthu (Chitra reaches amazingly high notes in between)
14) PanthaLa KuLathiL
15) Neeye Gathi Jagadheeshwari
16) Nee Maathramaane AvaLambam (another favourite of mine).
