Off late, K S Chitra has become one of my hot favourites amongst female singers. Her voice has a unique and rich timbre which I really enjoy. lets take this opportunity to discuss songs by her in Tamil and various other languages - Malayalam, Kannada and Telugu. Her songs sung under the tutelage of Ilayaraja, AR Rehman, Ravindran et al are really excellent, moreover she has a delightful classical touch as is seen in her rendition of "alaipayuthe" and the Sindhubhairavi songs. She has done a great deal of Hindu and Christian devotional albums in Southern languages...lets discuss those. My favourite Chitra song so far remains "gopika vasantham" and her duet with SPB in the Telugu
movie Swathikiranam. What a voice and that sharpness!
So please, lets discuss her songs!! :-)
(If this topic has been discussed in full detail - similar to the Vani Jairam thread - please post a link to it). Otherwise lets make this an encyclopedia of KSC songs.

Thanks again for those links u had given so long ago. I have had found time just today to listen to some of those. I was mesmerized by the album Sargam with music by Ravi (of Mumbai).

The shree saraswathy bit by Chithra hold you mesmerized. her speed, fluency are superlative. And the "aandholanam..." song by KJY, KSC is also mesmerizing. This is probably one of the last few good songs by KJY, before his voice has reached where it is today. But he sounds heavenly in this one.
Thanks to you again and again!

this thread needs a good participation by people like the participants of the VJ thread who are doing an unbelievable job there. maybe someone can do a chronological enumeration of KSC hits. For all her success in TFM, KSC seems to be quite "unsung" in this forum. when will she get her due?

Thanks for reviving this thread!! Guess what, I finally found a link to the song I have been talking about for so long. Here it is: http://www.musicindiaonline.com/music/l/VV00030T
It was very recently added to musicindiaonline. Look for Yamuna song by chitra. Share your comments here. I just think she was THE singer for that song. What a beautiful rendition.
Also listen to Diva swapnam by Unnikrishnan. One can understand how complex Sharath's compostions can sometimes be.

Another lovely song which was made to sound excellent by Chithra (alongwith Hariharan) is the telugu song "Kannullo nee roopame" from the movie Ninne pelladuthaa. Just take a listen at the song - a breezy, soft melody with amazing interludes and carnatic music undertones. What tops it all off is the vocals by Chithra and HH. Oh, what lovely improvisations by chithra which her strong carnatic base. She delicately touches the notes in the gamakam with a mesmerizing voice. And of course, Hariharan needs no special mention either. This is one of my favorites of chithra. It is a song which brought out the calibre that she has, atleast that is what I think. Come to think of it, I don't think any other singer here would have done full justice to this song. Just a superb mellifluous composition by Sandeep chowtha. Here is the link:

A few posts above I have spoken of "shree saraswathy namostuthe" by K S Chitra. A 2 minute song that leaves you craving and craving and craving for more. A breathless and breath-taking act by her! Music is by veteran Hindi (and Malayalam) film music director "Ravi". The whole album "sargham" is excellent of course!

Thanks and thanks again! Those songs just show what all Chitra is capable of. Whether it be Ilayaraaja or Raveendran, Ravi or Sarat, or A R Rahman, Chitra's classical training, her immense vocal range, her breath control, her ability to convey emotion and the sheer melody are crystal clear. I have never heard such complex songs in my whole life! The changes in pitch, rhythm are all too obvious and so many! But the fact is that she makes it all seem so easy and beautiful.
Even the sargams at the speed of light she has sung in Ilayaraaja's "paadariyaen" bowl me over completely each time I hear them. Thats one song I can listen to a 100 times over without getting tired!
In Malayalam, Chitra had released a private album called "Ragostavam". Has anyone heard it?

Referring to a song posted by MS, "chaliye kunjanamo" from Swathi Thirunal! A Hindi song from a Malayalam film, composed by M B Srinivasan. It reminds me of a very nice melody by Naushad - "saawan aaye ya na aaye" (AB+MR)). The song has an excellent tune and Chitra has done full justice to the lyrics and the song and carried it to mesmerizing heights.

You are most welcome. You know, I didn't really know that Chitra was one of my favorite singers until recently, when her numbers are so few and far between. Now when I go back and listen to some of her numbers again, I realize that she was so superior in her renditions compared to some of the present-day singers. As you said, she is so crystal clear in singing some of those gamakams and sangathis. Mallu land has made perfect (and the most) use of her talents, I would say. Lovely singer. I am glad she is still quite regular in telugu.

just browsing thru the various song links given in this page. The "devikenoopuram" song is awesome. The gamakams that she sings are unbelievable. She just passes through them with very little effort and we are left breathless.
The sri saraswati song is a genuine agmark carnatic composition by Muthuswamy Dikshithar. The prelude to this is a part of Sadhinchane - one of the Pancharatna Kritis of Thyagaaja. Both of them are in Arabhi. So, interesting mix there by Bombay Ravi. pity there are not as many classical albums in TFM as there are in MFM.
Are there any other carnatic albums by KSC other than the sampler in musicindionline?

yesterday I was listening to "Madhuram Gaayathi" by KSC. A mind-bloginglygligly tough song. should have carried a disclaimer "The song you are about to hear is performed by a professional and ought not be tried at home" or "In case of vocal medical complications after attempt at singing along, call 911".
I tried singing along (with my rudimentary bathroom & car-driving singing skills and could get beyond "Madhu..". but I was kinda put off by the commonplace synth beats used in this classical song. sounded like a remix.
