Sara,
great song...
i have seen this movie long time ago.I have completely forgotten abt it.But as soon as i heard the first line.i remembered meneka taking care of her mother.BD's line's adapted nicely for the situation.VJ is as usually awesome.
I think menaka will be travelling to see her dead mother, the bus breaks down and she think's this whole song in the bus.

MBS/Sethumadhavan's choice of lyrics from Paavendar's collections,MBS 's caressing tune,VJ's involved singing -a classic!
MBS has showed his liking for WCM in the prelude to "Thennankeetru" and various chorals.VJ's differnt "Amma" singing is another one to show where his interests were. But Behaag selection for this unique lullaby shows where his heart was.
Since you have already chosen this one will "Vaanam namathu" be the opening song for your MBS-Perspective write up,Saravanan?
Maneka's Mal debut ("Or MagaL Marikkumo" or OLangaL ?)-is also by Sethumadhavan?Maneka was thought to be Shoba's successor.NijangaL,Savithri-well there were opportunities provided but she failed to make it big.
Thanks for the thanks Pal!etho entha allakayala mudinthathu...

Saravanan -
A divine bracelet, a bloodline talisman, and a touchstone of affection and joy.
What to say? Could there be a better example (of artistry in TFM) where less is so much, and much more?
Not a song.
A Solitaire.

Dear Balaji, Saravanan,
Thanks for this rare melody. Some more info on the
song -
1) This is one of the first few songs tuned by MBS for
his 'Madras Youth Choir' and is still sung fondly by
its members (yes, the choir is alive and kicking, with
most of the 'youth' in their sunset years!) whenever
a programme is organised. I last heard it sung by them
during a request concert arranged by my friend
journalist Jnani a few years back. Everytime I hear
this song, tears roll down my eyes which I never
attempt to hide. Our sweetest songs are about saddest
things and rememberences of the past, is it not so?
2) MBS, as part of his ambitious plans to make
Bharathi, Bharathidasan, Vallaththol and other
national poets reach the poor and downtrodden children
studying in the corporation schools in Chennai, took
'amma unthan' too to the youngsters who were
captivated by its sheer melody and the lyric. When a
school students troop from Tamilnadu visited Delhi to
participate in a national music competition, they
chose to sing this number. But the organizers
categorically told that only Hindi songs should be
sung! The poor students and the teachers who
accompanied them walked out of the hall with
disapointment and then standing at the gates, sand
'amma unthan' loud ans soulfully with pride, drawing a
sizable gathering of onlookers. It was also reported
in the vernacular dailies then (mid 80s).
3) MBS has used one more song, 'uuzhikkoththu' by
Mahakavi Bharathi (vedi padu mandilaththu idi pala
thaalam poda) - originally tuned by him for Madras
youth Choir - in another film for which he was the MD
behind the screen and the protagonist on the screen -
'Agrakaraththil Kazuththai' scripted by the eminent
dramatist Naa.Muthusami of 'kooththup-p-pattarai' and
directed by the maveric director John Abraham.

Senty, Thanks for giving more details about the song's situation in the film. Btw, you're the only person I've known who's seen the film!
era.murukan Sir, Thanks a lot for the information.
The more I hear/think about MBS, I wonder at the greatness of the man, leave alone his musical genius!
R.S.Rajesh, a member of the Trivandrum Branch of the Youth Choir, says this in a mail that he wrote to me yesterday:
__________
Amma undhan kaivalaiyaay - this song is also a part of our choir songs. Our chorister had told us it is a melodius song. But since there are some difficult 'parts' in the interludes ,it seems so many members make mistakes,so it is not being taught for the past few years. Now let me try to influence him to teach us the song :))
_____________
R.S.Rajesh was also kind enough to mail to me some excerpts from a book on MBS-'Lets Sing Together' wherein Vani Jairam shares her memories of MBS.
This is what VJ has to say:
_________________
A Great Humanitarian
----------------------
I still can't believe that he is not with us
anymore. Sri.M.B.Srinivasan was a great person, always generating great amount of warmth, compassion and fondness for one and all. Fighting for causes, noble and legitimate,he saw to it that justice was done to people at the proper time.
I still remember one of his earlier programmes I attended in Madras by his group of singers. He made them sing so beautifully in perfect "Sur" and "Laya" that we were all moved to tears.
A man who never angled for riches, fame and comforts in life, but kept on doing a perfect
job of whtever he did. His group is one of the best we ever heard in our life.
I had the privilege to work with him in a few
movies. He was so thorough in his work and
execution that I found it such a pleasure singing his compositions. It is very very rare to come across a person of such texture and calibre.
It is the duty of everyone to carry on the perfection in singing,he so much strove for and that alone would do justice to his compositions. His sudden demise is a great loss to humnity and quality music.I sincerely pray for his soul and wish his group all strength and courage to bear the loss and continue the good work he started and keep his flag flying forever.

Song of the Day: ooru sanam from mella thiranthathu kadhavu.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/oorusanam.rm
- Sung by S.Janaki. Music by M.S.Viswanathan and Ilayaraja.
- Few songs capture the essence of night time so beautifully as this one. The song uses a lot of pauses, the silence emphasizing the mood of the song. People find the interludes of the song enchanting, but to me, the song is special due to its second charaNam. When SJ sings
"maaman odhadu pattu
naadham tharum kuzhalu
naanaa maaRak koodaathaa",
I lose myself everytime I hear her drawing out that line to depict the longing of a girl.
She continues,
"nilaa kaayum nEram
nenjukkuLLE baaram
mElum mElum eeram
indha nEram thaan...
indha nEram thaan"
The fairly banal lyrics are by Gangai Amaran, I think.
- newtfmpage has seen a lot of discussion on who composed this song and others in mellath thiranthathu kadhavu. It seems IR claimed in a TV programme that he composed this one, but few people disagree and point to classic MSV style touches in the song. There are others who write that MSV composed all the songs and IR just did the orchestration for them.

NagaS, I think this will be a good song where the lyrics could have been much better. What do you think?
- From: Venkatesh (@ 212.72.11.66)
on: Thu Apr 22 01:47:19 EDT 2004
All the songs in MTK was (melody) composed by MSV and set to orchestration by IR.
Our old forumer Srikanth had written an article once, when he witnessed the recording of Kuzhaloodhum kannanukku song, where also he mentioned these facts.

bb,
GA is not a bad kavinjar, But when it comes to village based songs, 'almost' all cine-kavinjas start thinking simple lyrics with some grameeya words is enough - Vairamuthu could be the only exception in this !
If we see from another angle, athila thappillainnum thoNuthu ... May be it suits the character(s) .. do you think any villege girl will use 'kaviththuvamaana' varNanais, than simple words when it comes to singing abt her lover ?
Remember 'kizhakkae uthiththa sooriyanae' from Citizen ? that song was 'good' in Vairamuthu standards, But when we see it in movie - illiterate meenavar koottam singing all those 'pure tamil puratchi' lyrics - sariyaa ottavae illai ...
