My Dear vikramfan,
This forum is for decent exchange of opinions. I have not belittled Vikram and his acting. if you had gone through my earlier posting , you will notice that I have not posted anything against Vikram as an acting. In fact after Sivaji, Vikram will attain the fame Sivaji attained. My point is a good actor like Vikram is wasted in a movie where the situations are contrived and unreal.
Vikram should also choose his movies where the script is tight. It need not be an "art" movie. he excelled in the commercial movie of "Sami" where the audience sat enthralled till the end.
Further , please touch your heart and say was the songs in PM even worth humming ?

Dear all,
I have seen it all from Sivaji to Kamal to Surya and I am not an old bugger. Let me tell some thing to some of you (e.g. the ones with names like velji and overacting) in uncertain terms...compare Kamal with Vikram and Surya. But...don't dare bring in Sivaji into the topic. You Kamal fans seem to have some 'complex' over Sivaji. Lets get this right...when its come to acting and class...he is one to ten...then comes the rest. I have seen Brando, Pacino, De Niro and I enjoy their commercial as well as artsy films alike. I have seen classier films that some of you may not have even known of. But....when it comes to acting...and sheer natural talent...there is none who comes even remotely close to Sivaji. I am talking about Hollywood and french actors here. Forget the locals. The greatness of Sivaji is he was a mass hero who gave classy films to the masses with classy performances and made them super duper hits...some of them were record breakers. Now...this has been an accepted truth...from Brando...to Heston...to...De Niro..to Dilipkumar..to Amitabh...to..Shantaram...to...Sayajitray...Shyam Benegal..to..MGR...to...Rajini...to Mammotty...Vijayakanth...to...Kamal and Surya!
As Kamal said once...he is an institution...the rest are all students...who excel and specialise in certain areas. Can we think of Kamal doing an inspector role like Rajani, Vijayakanth or Vikram. The same way, can Rajani do a romantic role like Kamal or Madhavan. But whichever role they do he is the inspiration...he is the ultimate. Now...what is impressive is after Sivaji...after 51 years...the tamil audience are watching someone who is not only demonstrating excellent natural talent...he is making acting look so EASY...the keyword EASY! He doesn't need the help of days long...plastic make-ups...he doesn't take a year to make a movie...he doesn't need the Balachanders, Bharathirajas & Maniratnams & Ilayarajas & Srirams...more importantly...they (all those classy, off-beat movies) are all becoming big commercial hits. Now, these were the attributes that made Sivaji the greatest. Now...I can see why Kamal fans or admirers have developed a complex over Vikram too. Again....make no mistake....Vikram is no Sivaji...but I am glad that in the hands of Vikram and Surya..and to some extent Madhavan I am pleased that the future of Tamil Cinema looks secure!
Cheers....Kannan

velji,
oru oru aalukkum rasanai maarum.intha dfla atha purinjukkutaanagnaa entha sandayume varaathu.According to me,pithamagan was a fantastic movie.Raja has always given good music for new efforts right from the 80's till now.I found nothing wrong with pithamagan songs or BGM.Infact BGM was really a class apart. And the film had many appreciable aspects and all the ingredients for a megahit.
And also in ur opinion, the movie was a waste.i totally accept that.it's purely ur judgement. But don't try to generalise ur opinions and declare statements like"NO MORE DICUSSION NEEDED"and all that stuff. No harm meant.sorry if i had hurt u.

HEY GUYS ILLAYARAJA SUX.DONT CONFIRM YOUR BAD MUSICAL TASTE BY STILL LISTENING TO IR.IR SONGS WERE HIT IN HIS TIMES BECAUSE THERE WAS NO OTHER BULLSHIIT TO HEAR.NOw ARR and HARRIS HAVE BLOWN HIS TOP OFF.IR SUX.DONT THINK IF U ARE A MINORITY THAT STILL LIKES IR,U HAVE A GOOD TASTE,THAT ISNT TRUE:Read on BELOW
Some one earlier had rightly quipped whether IR can compose a Symphony within a month. Even if it is true what will be the quality of such symphony ? If you have heard "How to name it, Nothing but wind" you can judge the quality. When IR played this to Paul marriet the french modern composer he asked an English knowing French man to translate the title to french. The man promptly translated is as "Nothing but 'Fart" " (!) (i.e) Nothing but "Kusu" ! Some "kusu" symphony ! Please stop talking about this non-existent "kusu" symphony.
THERE GOES YOUR ILLAYARAJA SHIIT WHEN COMPARED TO THE REST OF THE GIGANTIC WORLD.

I watched the movie yesterday in detroit. My review:
0. Not a Bad Movie
1. Quite a few +ive points in the movie
1.1 Songs and BGM are just really good.
1.2 Director and team has done lot of hard work in getting the scenes natural.
1.3 Relief from the monotonous duets, dancing around sequences
1.4 Surya and Rasika has done some good hardwork and projected a different image.
1.5 Laila has started acting!
2. -ive points :
2.1 Too much of fight sequence and violence
2.2 Surya-Laila's scenes were too dragging! Director missed the cut-off points on those scenes.
2.2 Vikram could have been characterized better. Apart from the fight sequences in the first half, there was absolutely no characterization on him.
2.3 Fact that he enters the village from the graveyard after 25 years is kind of joke.
2.4 The relationship sprouting between Vikram and Surya is not convincing enough. Some more could have been added to show that!

Just now back from watching the movie..... real good effort..... TEAM effort always pays good..... that can be seen in the movie clearly.... very good editing - especially for the last scene (Addadaa song).... all the actors did it very good..... Surya and Vikram - hats off to these two.... and last about the "KING" - nammaa thalaaivaaar - summaa poondhu vizhayadi irukaaaar..... i really pray that IR and BALA should do lots more movies.....
remember reading this in one of the reviews (Kumduam?) - "BALA knows how to touch people's heart" - oh yeah..... 100% true..... he makes everyone cry at the end..... whoever was watching the movie, was laughing, and clapping, untill the last scene - iam sure there would have been few tears in everyone at the end....

babainwhite,
Why you have such a venom against IR? His "How to Name it" and "Nothing But Wind" are acknowledged from Zubin Mehta to Naushad as great contribution.
You are calling them fart. What to say? He is the one musician who has earned all purists respect and people respect alike. His cassetes may not sell today, but his musical fundas are always straight and he still has a good mass to appreciate his music.

KannanfromSydney,
Sivaji was a great actor. But one can not forget his overacting also.(Could be problem with those directors).
What Kamal tried to do is inherit some from Sivaji and add some original acting to make it more natural. Ofcourse he has advantage of sophisticated makeups.
While Kamal may not do the inspector role like Sivaji, Sivaji can't do romance role like Kamal. It just did not fit in for him.
While Sivaji concentrated only on acting, Kamal does approach cinema as a whole and participated in all the roles(Acting, Singing, Directing, ScreenPlay etc) which can not be brushed away.
It reminds me of one stunt man describing about teaching stunt to Sivaji. Stunt Man asked Sivaji howfar you can lift the foot and Sivaji has shown the knee height. If you consider kamal as inspector, inspectors need to be physically fit for performing the fight and kamal will fit in there. Sivaji will be a disaster there. Can sivaji give a movie like Salangai Oli with full importance to dance. I saw his Pattum Baradhamum which was a comedy.
In jist, as there is a saying "Vallavanukku Vallavan Vaiyagathil Undu", no body that great that they can't be surpassed by upcoming talents. Be it Sivaji, Kamal, MSV, IR , ARR etc. For Uplifting Sivaji's contribution, you need not have to humble contributions from artist like Kamal. If Sivaji was pillar for cinema in one sense, Kamal is also a pillar for cinema in another sense.
