I'm a new visitor to this website. I couldn't see anyone discussing about Vani Jayaram's songs.
Let me start this one.(It had been there previously pls. forgive me!)
"Ezhu swarangalukkul ethanai paadal..
Ithaya surangathul ethanai kelvi...
Vaazhum manitharukkul ethanai salanam.."
Wow! Beautiful voice!

isaiosai,
I don't believe your TB-Nandita-VoiceType-SS story. If they cared so much for perfection and if they believed that VJ/KSC/SUJ/SL/UR did not fit the bill, then there is always B.S.Sasirekha or Nithyasree. One of these ladies would have given life and thamiz maN vAsanai to the song. They simply chose Sadhana because that is the "trend" and someone probably believed that they can pull another "snegidhane". Why did they choose Nandita to play kaRuppu azagi? There is no shortage for kaRuppu azagis in TN, don't you agree? It is all about "trend" and marketing, not any shortage of local artistes.

Apparently the Jathiswaram I posted is from the Telugu remake of "Apoorva RaagangaL". You may be interested in listening to other songs too.

What's truly astonishing about the "voice" story, Neel D, is that the woman who plays Azhagi was not about to speak her own lines in the film anyway! Imagine finding a suitable singer to match the dubbing voice...if this were not funny, it would definitely be sad!!

Susi, thanks a lot for reminding the song "Kungumal kolangal"! I have never heard that song since sometime after the film's release!
Naaz, do you have a link somewhere? I am so eager to hear that song...just for the melody...which is playing in my mind right now! MSV MSV-dhaan!

avr, Twinkle-Twinkle little star is neither by MSV nor TMS. (AiyyO TMS English-laam nenachu paakkavE mudiyala). It is somebody else. May be the one - Azeez or something - who sang with LRE in Naanoru Kaadhal Sanyaasi.

Naaz:
Its nice to know that Neela is a super-duper hit in Karnataka. Generally, I dont consider popularity of a song as important or reflective of its quality.
But VJ as a singer has always been highly under-rated, inspite of her unique voice. Hope she gets another award for that movie, she definitely deserves more fame and popluarity than she has got.
Even sites like MIO have put up only 5-6 songs by VJ in the VJ section there. Its often too tiring to dig up so many movies looking for a VJ song. Even dhool.com has very few VJ songs. Its a pity.

another thing about VJ - I've heard she could distinguish between raagas at the age of 3 or 4!! Amazing. She is god-gifted and plus has put in lots and lots and lots and lots of efforts in nurturing her voice.

Edhu eppadiyo, Lata Mangeshkar had a hand in destroying Vani Jayaram's career in HFM. I strongly believe in that.
When people who come to support Lata in this regard often talk about instances of other MD's and singers (both classical and film) praising Lata of her humility. But I have always felt that these support factors that they bring in are usually irrelevant to the topic! Why would Lata NOT be nice to someone who is not her competitor? Even Anuradha Powdwal was a victim of Lata's highhandedness. Why all this cover, even her own sister didn't escape her domination. Which is very reason that O P Naiyaar who was in an intimate relationship with Asha, always worked with Asha and NEVER worked with Lata.
When people argue that Vani Jayaram's pronunciation of Hindi was very accented, I feel that's again bulls*hit. Even Lata had her pronunciation problems in her early days. Didn't she make up for all that? Given time and chance, even Vani Jayaram would have definitely corrected her pronunciation - if at all she were accented that is! I can't believe that she could be accented when what she learnt as a child was actually Hindi!
Even they say that she was loud! What the heck, if someone sings loudly, can't the MD tell her to reduce the loudness?
I am not saying that all the songs that were rendered by Lata or PS or SJ when Vani Jayaram was very much in the field, could have been better sung by Vani Jayaram, but I do believe it 100% When Vani says that many of her songs have been snatched. One song that immediately came to my mind was 'Rene Beethi Jai'. Ofcourse, Vani Jayaram could have rendered that song beautifully, too.
And a last note which is very subjective: I have a gut feeling that Vani Jayaram can't have lied because I feel a genuine goodness in her when I see her pictures.

Thanks AVR - I just chanced upon it at MIO. VJ and Chitra Visweswaran grew up together, family friends and neighbours, I think. I am not surprised that she is interested in the ARTS, in general. The Kelucharan Mahapatra/Birju Maharaj albums are "dance" based (for a classical dancer).

The only aversion I have to the word "fan" is that it is the shortened form of "fanatic" - and that comes with a lot of negative/obsessive baggage.

Karthi - VJ's pronunciation problems are somewhat of a smokescreen, in my opinion. Malayalees, Bengalis, Telegu-speakers, Kannadigas, Gujaratis, Braj-Bhasha speakers...critics and the masses have not voiced any reservations about her songs in those languages. She gets "accent" thing only when it comes to Hindi/Marathi. And that is somewhat more interesting: How could a person who spent a good part of her early life in Mumbai be so bad at those two predominant languages in Maharashtra...? Especially when she trained and also sang for such greats (during her apprenticeship) like Vasant Desai, Naushad, Jitendra Abisheki, Kumar Gandharva and Raghunath Seth. All bonafide "native" Hindi/Marathi speakers.
I'd be interested in reading articles (if any) on her flawed Telegu, Malayalam, Kannada diction/pronunication. After all, Tamil is her mother-tongue. So why should she be spared by the other southern critics who are not tamil?
Does anyone know of any such articles? I am sure IsaiOsai will also be interested in looking them up.

AVR - I pointed out the top ten in Kannada only to indicate that there is still the possibiity of "quality" when it comes to popularity. I am not familiar with the other songs on the list - but Aa Meru Ee Meru is definitely not a "trendy" number to my ears. Do you agree?
PS: Have not checked my mail in a few days. Will get back to you sometime soon.

Naaz:
That is not what I meant to say AT ALL. Read my post again. I too never meant that popularity is NEVER a status of quality. I was happy that the song is a hit coz I SINCERELY believe she deserves more fame. Thats it.
For me as a listener, the song ,whether or not it is popular, whether or not a critic praises it, whether or not its wins a public poll, etc etc......., remains just as good if it provides me pleasure . Neela songs are a pleasurable listen.
OTOH some songs which I find unbearable have been glowingly reviewed, composed by a legend.......... That does not make a diff. to me either,
I do not make my opinions based on awards and reviews, as a matter of fact I often take those things with a bucket full of salt :-)
I again say, I am VERY HAPPY about Neela songs being popular as she deserves greater fame. Also that may popularize what I consider to be "good music". ("Good music" is of course a subjective term :-))
I had told u this sometime back. Imagine a hypothetical scenario where VJ does not get NA for Shankarabharanam. Suppose it went to another song by someone else for whatever reason. Also if Shankara.. was not a hit. The movie sank without a trace. After some years, a few music lovers managed to trace a rare tape of this. Would the quality of the song have been less???
Maybe u thought that was a sarcastic remark on you. I do strongly disagree with u on many things, maybe thats why u felt. But it wasnt anything of that sort. But I stick to whatever I have said here,on this thread, earlier.
And one more example is "MANGALA KANNAGI". And there are atleast 200 more such examples I quote.
Just another digression. National awards which I feel were rather inappropriate - lata for kora kaagaz, manna dey for mera naam joker, asha for ijaazat, there is one SJ song, rafi for "kya hua tera waada"..............................
And I am not even talking of filmfare awards here :-)

Also Naaz, I had once written to u that whatever i have written here is JUST MY OPINION. You may be surprised (or even delighted?? :-)) to know that my own family members disagree with a lot of things discussed here on this thread. I form my opinion after careful listening, often after listening to the song atleast 10-15 times.
But an online forum is for people to express their opinions, whether or not they are the gospel truth. The gospel truth is often beyond our reach anyway. There are always two sides to any major debate, with STRONG VALID POINTS on either side. The truth is probably somehwere in the middle :-)
I dont think any music forum is a place for formal critiquing of music at all. Its just for people to exchange opinions.
Bye,
ajit
