Saravanan, I had heard this tune quite a few times in some other language long time back in VividhB. I thought it was Kannada but from what you have written it might have been the Telugu original.

bb: The only similarity is in the sandham of the pallavi and, thankfully, the similarity ends there :-) :-)

Vijay - First Kannada, then Telugu, then Tamil is the order I believe.

Hi bb,
auto raja? who acted in that movie?
"Sangathil Paadatha Kavithai" is also from that movie, right? I thought IR was the composer.

G Ragavan,
I know it sounds strange, but IR composed just one song in Auto Raja (sangathil paadatha kavithai), while S-G composed the rest. The record of the film says so, and the radio announcements too said the same.
Vijay, the order is as rajaG has written-- I thought I too was quite clear about it :)

"Kalaiye en vaazhkai" - a precious classic whose value increases with passage of time
"aadal paadal" - is the best song of VVV IMO and SJ's rendition had and will have no parallel. Kuralil engernthu thaan varumo antha kuzhaivum, kudhookalamum!!!

G.Raghavan,
I think Vijayakanth & Sasikala was the lead pair in AutoRaja!

Surya, in Auto Raja Vijayakanth's pair was some obscure actress (Gayathri, if I remember right). Sashikala made her debut only in 1983 with Ilamaikkalangal. Auto Raja was released on 27.3.1982.
T :)) andha alavukku theriyaathu, but here's some more info, in case you're interested: R & N were born in Sivarampet area of Mysore. Their father, Rajappa was a music teacher. They learned music from their father and later from Bidaram Krishnappa. They worked for a while under H.R.Padmanabha Sastry before becoming independent MDs.

bb - thank you for the 2 recent and wondeful SOTDs.
Saravanan - great write up on RN and thanks for the link - always loved the kanada version. DD used to have a program where selections from Kanada, malayalam and telugu were featured. SJ and SBP sound so fresh. It is TFM's loss that RN were not encouraged. Do you have info on a Kanada movie starring Anant Nag and Lakshmi (paranormal theme), IR was the MD. This was dubbed in tamil as Kanavanai Meetiya Gayathri.

Saravanan: AutoRaja-layaa Indha vanji magaL oru oodhappoo paatu? Now that you mentioned about the obscure actress, I vaugely remember seeing her face on the poster ( may be she was from West/North..)

It was a good collection of information about Rajan-
nagendra. Intiinti ramayana song of Telugu is veetiku veedu
vasapati. The reamke did a good thing to Tamil cinema at
that time showing a low budget and good remake can yield
more vassol.
I think this film was a trend setter and producers started
to try out a lot of remake from Telugu. even Telugu
directors like Dasari came to tamil cinema. Good clean
family stories have come to Tamil cinemas and music
direcotrs like Vijaybhaskar, MB Sreenivasan, GK Venkatesh
(reentry) entered the filed with good melody and broke the
monoply of MSV and KVM. This actually paved the way of
Illyaraja in big way afterwards.
Rjan Nagendra's Thoda varovo thontharavo (Iru Nilavu) was
a woderful song. It was I think originally sung by Rajkumar
as ' Ngunagutho, nee varuve' in Kannada movie- Thanks to
Cheenai Vivid Bharthi in 1980s of Panmoli Pattalkal.
Thanks,
B.P. Thiagarajan

Subject: Re: [tfmpagesotd] Song of the Day #439: kalaiyE en vaazhkkaiyin from meenda sorgam
Date: Wed, 12 May 2004 17:24:08 +0530
Another absorbing melody. Sridhar, Gemini, Padmini, A. Vincent, PN. Sundaram and Kannadasan came out with good output.
This song is like 'Then Nilavu's Kalaiyum Niye malaiyum niye type. AM Raja accomponying a female voice.
This movie is about a singer and dancer love. They will be seperate as usual by the family problems. everythings is spoiled. Finally they come together. evrybody is happy.
The script was good. use of shadow and lighting was fanatstic in the movie. The pictureisation of the song was so beautiful. though the film is little off beat. Almost all the songs were good.
Regards,
B.P. Thiagarajan

raja m, I don't seem to recall the kannada film you're referring to :(
Surya, 'indha vanji magal oru oodhapoo' is from Thaambathiyam Oru Sangeetham. The 'poo' song from Auto Raja is 'kanni vannam rojappoo'
BPT, the kannada original of 'thodavaravo thondharavo' is 'nagu nagutha' from the film Giri Kanye, sung by Rajkumar & SJ. You can listen to it here:

Saravanan,
That was a beautiful song. Another great song of the "Radio" era ! I have never heard of the composers and thank you for the info on them. You have an admirable taste, pal. I saw that you made a note of 'malarE ennenna kOlam...'. That is another song I have always searched for. Do you have it with you? These two songs would by themselves be good examples of the kind of composers they were. It is unfortunate they didn't compose more songs in Tamil Films.
The guitar plucking sequence that starts the song and continues with the pallavi was very familiar to me. I must have heard it 'elsewhere' too :) Whatever, it was haunting and it made me try it in my guitar which I haven't touched for months!

'kalaiyE' is a song I hear frequently but which never sounds monotonous to me. I somehow get reminded of the semi-classical Hindi songs of Chitchor ('Tu Jo Mere Sur Mein', 'Jab Deep Jale Aana Jab'), whenever I hear this song.

Saravanan/SL/Others: Was kalaiyE en vaazhkkai inspired by "naa bOlE naa bOlE naa bOlE rE"? Ofcourse, rendum standard BhaagEsri usage aagavum irukkalaam.

G, 'kalaiyE ...' and 'mayakkum mAlai pozhuthE nee pO pO' IMO were inspired by another BhaagEsri by C Ramanchandra in Anarkali 'jAg dard ishq jAg' by Hemant Kumar and Lata.

Saravanan, thanks for the link of telugu Intinti Ramayanam. The first song 'Ee Tarunamu' was also dubbed from kannada song 'Naa Biduvene Nanne Naa Koduvene', sung by SPB and SJ, movie is 'Simha Jodi' starring Vishnuvardhan and Manjula, MD R-N.
Anyway thanks for reminding the beautiful tune.
Raja m, according to my knowledge IR was not directed any kannada movie starring Ananth Nag and Lakshmi, he was directed 'Mathu tappada maga' starring Ananth and Urvashi Sharada(telugu actress).
bb, thanks for the beautiful song of SJ.
regards
Chitti

rajaG, Chalapathi Rao has lifted Hindi tunes at times ( 'Ullangal ondraagi', 'Padhumai thaano' etc), but I don't think 'kalaiye en vaazhkkayin' is a direct lift, perhaps only an inspired composition as SL has mentioned.
bb, what about 'enna dhesamo ithu enna dhesamo' for today :)

Raja m,
Are you referring to "Chandanadha Gombhe" which had the wonderful songs tuned by Rajan Nagendra.
Ths songs of this AN/Lakshmi Starrer used to played frequently on Doordarshan in 1979/1980 period.
I believe got dubbed in Tamil also?
Saravanan, any idea?

They are different movies if I am not wrong.
