Yes, Jag said it correctly.
Wat's with this obsession abt ARR fans claiming that ARR is of international appeal? Boy, have they been taken on a ride. You goons don't even know wat is international music and yet claiming his music is of international appeal. My neighbor is also jamming his kinda music daily in his house with all these techno-loop-samples and some folksy or local language thrown in. So that too would have internaltion appeal rite?
Ada madda saambrannigalla,
whether these garbage have international appeal or not, ask urself does it appeal to you in the 1st place? ask urself do u still listen to those stuff after the hype is gone? seek those answers within urself 1st before coming into this forum and making a fool of urself.

now that ARR has shown Western audience that he's capable of mastering their own domain, which is Pop/western music, I wd like to him go "ok... now that you've heard me playing YOUR music, hear MY INDIAN music" and give something in the range of "Poraaley ponnuthaayee" (my example maybe wrong, though)or some other song which sounds Indian.
hey.. arent these posts digressive in nature for this thread? :D

Yes I do listen to them!
Thats because I am a different person than you and I have a different preference for music.
I have heard this sshit from IR fans millions of times! They always say "Will this appeal to you in 10 years"
I dont know what makes them think that nobody in the world can have a diiferent musical taste than theirs and why nobody should listen to urvasi and muqabla!
Even today I listened to jeans! Columbus Columbus! What a song!!!!

Great point!
Before he takes a Poraale Ponnuthayee overseas he has to make sure he adds enough polish to it so that it is "presentable" in the medium overseas audience are used to.
Actually didn't he do that with Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan with Gurus of Peace??
He used the acoustic guitar and made british school childen sing "What? are you waiting for another day another dawn..."
really tacky

V ,
IR doesn't do assembly line stuff. His music is an art which is built over years of musical expertise and hardwork. It will be a long time before the rest of the world catches up to his genius. If you are able notice the subtlety in Boys' album then I am surprised that you made no mention of subtleties in IR's new albums. Just two songs from Julee Ganapathy are enough to show his art and it's nuances.
BTW wasn't IR the one who scoffed at carnatic vidwans with a mind-blowing trend-setting score in Sindhu Bhairavi? In fact he was the one to pave the way for all forms of musical expression we see in TFM, by thinking differently and doing things differently and challenging other musicians to raise their creativity levels.

' I have heard this sshit from IR fans millions of times! They always say "Will this appeal to you in 10 years" '
I have heard this more from ARRfans that ARR's songs will not appeal at first listening . The reason IR fans might say that because they expect you to understand the subtleties in the music atleast after 10 years. I am rediscovering IR's songs after learning and reading from this forum about their nuances. In fact about many other people's music too including ARR and VS.

ur take on girlfriend (boys) is too gud V(141....), we cant call it a rock type song as it has N-Sync type of sound too in it.....and the interlude, the guitar riff sounds like aerosmith's "all the way"... now tell me guys if this is not international appeal then which is? this genius has fused 2 contradictory types of music in one song..... hard-core rock fans know how tuf it is.....

Dear V...
that guy who always claim "Do u still listen to this and that?"....is just an assylum member...
please forgive him...
he needs a bit of attention...
he believes..if he listens to something after 10 years..that means..the song is good...
but her forgot...something..u see..he listens to IR songs..after 10 years..coz..10 years before..when it was released..he was ard 5 - 10 years old...he only listens to Old McDonald at that time may be..so he is trying to catch up with the composition now...it is not as though..it is appealing after 10 years..(although, yes it is..)..
but for ARR fans..we are already gettign enough of his composition presently...and still we do go back to his old composition..and enjoy...
and the fact that this same moron says when "Boys is not like Roja, TT, "..or sort..proofs..that ARR's compostion still in his mind...rite?

Hi Maddy,
When it comes to western, IR and ARR have different styles. IR is more obssessed with the classical version and popular western music of earlier days and has not explored other current trend of western music. ARR is good at modern trend of western music. Infact ARR still need to explore some areas of music. I dont see this makes them inferior to the other, its just not their forte.
About carnatic ... I am damn sure IR has revolutionised Indian film music with the way he used Carnatic music. I can easily say no one in TFM even India film world has played around with carnatic and given great music with carnatic touches as IR (MSV is genius of his own right in this). Even carnatic experts will say this.
ARR is a great mixer of popular music but I cant say the same with ARR and carnatic (atleast with whatever he has produced till now).
What IR lacks is that he has not still understood popular hindi and current youth taste ... atleast for now!
One more thing Maddy about International appeal ...
For westeners, Indian music is just part of world music and others like rock, jazz are part of the MUSIC. With that mentality, I dont expect people to listen to it unless its popularised by us. Is Rehman doing enough to popularise Indian music without losing its native merits? I would say no. I dont expect him to (atleast he is using the popularity to say words about Indian music).
Its like saying MS Subbulakshmi is not as popular as Eminem ... which means Eminem is way better than MSS? You get as popular as the music form, unless you seek to make it popular (that too with carnatic called in a broader name - world music, instead of referring with its name). Hardcore tamil and carnatic music is not popular all around the world and IR did not seek (might be his mistake) for international glory (or did not have the money, power or sponsor) to glorify it with his way of doing music without comprimising with native merits. Its hard to get international appeal with cult music without adding some elements of popular international music or without a sponsor.
I saw a documentary that potrays how English became THE international language from one of the many international languages 70 yrs back, just because of huge propaganda and money.
One more thing people in North from ARR's mouth in an interview:
North Indians do not welcome other forms of music as South Indians do.

well i have to say that my God is wrong in this statement(if it was his) "North Indians do not welcome other forms of music as South Indians do"..... Mumbaiites accepted "Humdum Suniyo Re" better than wat Tamils accepted "Enrenrenrum Punnagai"...i accept popularity is not a yardstick for gr8ness but we have to give credit to ARR for attaining popularity.... u guys never give it... btw ARR is gr8 in western classical too..... "kaathu kaathu dhinam" from Uzhavan is a gr8 example..

Hi Maddy,
We never said we dont accept ARR is good. Its just I came to this thread after some peace and saw there were things like IR is for B and C centres and ARR is for A centre. Endendrum Punnagai was a hit everywhere I guess. I remember many of my friend and myself repeatedly heard that song many times. Official song of our office infact for couple of months.

"btw ARR is gr8 in western classical too..... "kaathu kaathu dhinam" from Uzhavan is a gr8 example"
well maddy.. i beg to differ... just a couple of songs here and there in different forms (like WCM/folk) with (decent) hit rate aint mean that the composer's gr8... he has to consistently prove that when the oppurtunity comes to him... he's been consistent like hell in Pop/foot-tapping numbers but carnatic/folk/WCM or atleast Indian music for that matter?
Nevertheless,i feel ARR isnt given enuf scope nowadays to experiment unlike his earlier days... all ppl (or most ppl) expect from ARR is foot-tapping numbers and nothing else... they dont understand that only when the story/situation demands something, u can hv an "oorvasi" or "muqabla" in every movie.... 'Kannathil muthamittaal' wd be an ideal example that he was brought down, without ppl noticing how well the songs gelled into the movie.
but OTOH, for example take the movie "Kozhi koovudhu", i dont think the director wd hv wanted IR to compose a highly WCM-oriented masterpiece song like "Edho mogam".. or some hell-raising numbers like "sandhirarum sooriyarum" (Avatharam) or "Aanandha raagam" (Panneer pushpangal) or a "thalayai guniyum thaamaraye" in different movies..."u dont give me scope? i'll perform within the limits but still excel and show you mastery"...that was IR's self-motivation that we got such gems... wd like ARR to follow suite, but in his own way. :-)

Vj yes I agree with you. Kannathil Muthamittal was one underrated album which I liked atleast for the uniqueness and it jelled with the movie. The example you gave were also apt wrt classical music.
