Let me start this one.(It had been there previously pls. forgive me!)
"Ezhu swarangalukkul ethanai paadal..
Ithaya surangathul ethanai kelvi...
Vaazhum manitharukkul ethanai salanam.."
Wow! Beautiful voice!

Oru Indhiya Kanavu rings a distant bell....methinks it was featured on DD's Sunday aft regional sometime in 84-85.
Was this a Suhashini starrer by any chance? with who else....?

Prabhu,
yep it was a Hasini, Rajiv starrer. Directed by Komal Swaminathan.
It had this great song that naaz mentioned. I think I have the song in a recorded collection somewhere. Doosi thatti paarkiren. ( MSV s post Ilayaraja hits !) Kidaithal u give me an archanai.

Thanks Vengayam! My recollection of the co-star was vague, not a too-familiar guy, so you've just confirmed its Rajiv.

Vengayam / Prabhu,
Oru Indhiya Kanavu was neither a good nor a successful film. It came quick on the heels of Thanneer Thanneer which was the high point of KS's "activist" pen. The success of TT spurred him to wield the megaphone himself. OIK silenced it for good.
The song "En Peyare Enakku Marandhu Pona" begins with the utterance of the character's name - Anamika (azhagana tamizh peyar :-)) - and the song begins right after. This song was a "mish-mash" of the Adi Velli and Sippi Irukkudhu hits. It featured a full length "pudhuk kavidhai" written by ? (Was it KS, MM or VM??) which made for an interesting experiment.
The song was not aired much, just around the time of the film, which lasted all of two weeks in the Chennai Cinemas (before heading for "noon shows" at Vetri and Crown and Mekala :-))
The song is still worth the trouble of "doosi thatt"ings. Vengayam, paatodu natchatira rasi-yaiyum sollidunga...archanaikku :-)

Naaz: Komal did one other film too- Anal Kaatru, also 1983, same year as Oru Indhiya Kanavu.
En peyarae enakku maranthuppona indha vanaandharathil ennai peyar solli azhaithathu yaar- neeya neeya neeya - a lovely song by Vairamuthu. I remember reading somewhere that it was originally a poem in one of VM's published Poetry Collections. MSV called him and said that he was using it for the film, and VM happily agreed.

Naaz, without SPB, SJ and Chithra your list of preferred male and lady singers looks empty to me :-)
"My personal perference of singers in TFM would look like this: VJ, PS, LRE, BSS and UR (who knows what marvels would have come our way had IR given her half the solos he sent the way of SPS, Jency and Chitra.) "
I disagree that ANY of Chitra's songs should have gone to UR. The reverse might be true in some cases. Chithra probably had the fewest limitations amongst any lady singer in the 80s in terms of voice/tonal quality and her technical prowess needs no elaboration. Sasirekha and Uma Ramanan are good track singers at best and should have been just that. NOM, just my opinions on your list.

None taken.
I tend to prefer singers who have a baritone / mezzo soprano voice and can handle soft, whispery or tight-lipped singing only so much.
To be frank, I don't see all that great a difference between UM or KSC's voice or style of singing. The former might have also fared better in the pronunciation dept., but that's only for a stickler for authenticity like me. Don't you feel they sang similar songs - in scale and mood, given that IR was their full-time mentor for a greater part of their career?
Hence my statement about "half the solos."
Talking of Chitra, what did you think of her latest - "Mere Dil Ka Hai Yeh Kehna" from Armaan?

Naaz, havent listened to it yet. Have stopped listening to new Hindi numbers unless I stumble upon them accidentally or a friend recommends them strongly. I have a feeling I dont miss much from what little HFM I hear these days. I keep going back to my 60s collection.
"Don't you feel they sang similar songs - in scale and mood, given that IR was their full-time mentor for a greater part of their career?
"
Chithra sang all kinds of songs. Songs like "Mari Mari ninne", "Karaiyaadha manamundo" in the light/semi-classical genre havent been handled by UR. She was also moderately successful in doing SJ-like pranks with her voice modulations in songs like "Othayila ninnadhenna" (Vanaja Girija) or "Maarugo Maarugo"(Sathi Leelavathy). Malayalam songs are an entirely different story. You would realize that UR is nowhere in the same league as Chithra if you start listening to some of her semi-classicals in MFM. I used to think versatility was not a strongpoint of Chithra but she did her best to change my views.

at the risk of repeating what i said elsewhere Chitra & Alka go hand in hand. They are competent without ever being exciting. They would have made a mark in the army. Following orders no questions asked.

Awwww come on, vengayam :-). Listen to Chitra singing "shree saraswathy namostute" (Malayalam film Sargam). It's a very short piece, probably 80 seconds or so, but Chitra's singing is a miracle.
She is a superlative, brilliant semi-classical singer. Without talent of the highest order, she wouldn't have been able to do justice to those hundreds of challenging tunes composed by Raveendran and Sharath. And such superlative justice, probably she has delivered more than the composers would have expected! Sharath's songs are some of the most complex creations in film music, but Chitra just glides through - examples "Devikenupuram" and "Madhuram Gaayathi". What's more - Chitra has the ability to pack in a whole lot of "feeling" into her renditions (admitted that feelings are quite subjective
:-)). There are some songs like "Alaiypayuthey Kanna" and "Chaliye Kunjanamo" where she has added to the beauty of the composition with a thousand embelishments. In the latter song, the way she has stretched the word "mokun" would make a music-lover crave for more and more. That one word - just brings to fore a thousand facets of Chitra's artistry. I don't find any of these songs I have mentioned here to be any less than the best of Vani Jairam (eg: Aanathineeyara, brocheva.., thottilil thodangidum, varuvan vadivelan - all of which are no doubt excellent renditions and a thousand thanks to Vani for having given us these songs).
So I would disagree with your statement "competent but not exciting" :-). About Alka Yagnik, I really haven't heard too many semi-classical songs by her, in fact I have heard only one - "more ghar aaye sajanwaa" (along with Sadhana Sargam and Suresh Wadkar). I have heard she has had extensive classical training from her mother. But I would think Kavitha Krishnamurthy can be more easily compared to Chitra (or Vani) in semiclassical songs. Most recent example is "Kaahe Chhed Chhed Mohe" (IMO, the best song in Devdas - why has it sunk without a trace, when the ordinary "Maar Daala..." became so popular?
:-))

I hope you have forgiven the mix-up between Akilan and Asokamitran. I used to haunt the Connemara Library in Madras, reading these tamizh novels, savouring every line, many a saturday afternoon. Now it all seems like another lifetime!
(Would still like to have your views on HJ / Akilan's work - if you've read POAL and CP)
End Digression.
While Saravanan is working on the next instalment (hint, hint )of the chronology, I'd like to offer my translation services for any of the Hindi / Urdu songs...Pick any, and I will get to work. Just an offer - no sweat if you'd rather pass :-)

av,
what shall I say! You like chitra good for you ! I find her competent good for me.!! i have not heard her Malayalam songs. I meant no offence meant but I think I am entitled to my opinion.
Naaz, definitely forgiven. Unfortunately I have read neither. Coming to think of it I do not know why I have not read much of Akilan. Probably they were too heavy when my mother was reading them & when I started out it was with Aarvi ( china choo choo & things like that in the now defunct Kannan - back issues mind you I am not that old) then on to sujatha, kalki, chandilyan, PVR till i graduated as it were to La Sa Ra, Thi Ja & Asokamitran. I really dig AM for his ability to reflect the feelings of the common man & the deceptive simplicity of the language. So I was bowled off a full toss as it were till saravanan came along & no balled you! I'll catch up on Akilan soon.( Gnana peeta viruthu petra ore tamizh ezhuthallarallava avar!)
Is your offer for translation limited to only VJ's songs or is it all inclusive.

I am so starved for a tamizh novel in these parts I would even read Vadhulan or Savitha if I could lay my hands on a copy :-) Not that there's a shortage of books to read - ever. Sometimes it all feels like playing catch-up with your own life for all the wasted hours of distraction!
Alas, the offer is terriotorially defined :-(

Hi guys!!
Are U watching VJ's programme in Asianet on every friday at 9pm. It's a real treat. Her voice is so young and very much under control. I have watched most of the episodes. She speaks malayalam well. She comes with good preperation. (some time she refer the book for lyrics). She is sharing lots of information about MD's , lyricts etc.
It was really amazing listening her songs with same effect. "Guddi","shankarabaranam","swathi kiranam" songs were really superb. Dont miss it.
