bb: Thanks ! I remember mentioning this song in a post a few months back. This was one of the songs you heard in villages. The others I remember were 'yeru pootti povaaye anne chinnanne' and 'vaanga machaan vaanga vandha vazhiye paathu ponga'. Your parents' generation was fortunate enough to see a lot of movies with 'social message'. This was one of the best.

ADMK songA? Setha paNathai Amma kayile koduthupodunnu varuthey?
What Maruthakasi did in 50s Vaali attempted in 80s Simla Special "Thanjavuru meLam adichu" and there is a similar listing in Cheran's Porkalam "thanjavuru maNnu eduthu".Simple lyrics sung beautifully by TMS.
Produced by VK Ramasamy (not Nadipisai Pulavar KR Ramasamy as mentioned) the movie had a brilliant performance by VKR.Nambiyar had the duet with MN Rajam Öndru serntha Anbu Maruma.

Dear Balaji,
This is co produced by APN and VK Ramasamy
Story based in the Coimbatore dialect
Sivaji acted as an innocent person in the movie
This song penned by Maruthakasi is another feather in his cap
Probably this song might have broadcast by the Ulavar ullagam of AIR hundred times
KVM and Pukaledni taught TMS very nicely to have the ciombatore flavour in the song
With regards,
B.P. Thiagarajan

Song of the Day: oru kOppaiyilE en kudiyiruppu from raththa thilagam.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/orukoppaiyile.rm
- Sung by TMS. Lyrics by Kannadasan. Music by K.V.Mahadevan (?)
- Lyrics in our PPP page: http://www.newtfmpage.com/ppp/orukop.html
- PPP has a detailed article on this song here: http://www.newtfmpage.com/ppp/kann10.html
- As the article mentions, when we view the video of the song, it doesn't strike us that TMS is singing the song, rather it sounds like Kannadasan himself. I wonder if anyone else could have written a song so profoundly about himself as Kaviyarasar has done it here.

Music was by KVM indeed.
Ratha thilagam failed @ box office.
It dealt about the Indo-china War
It had shivaji,Savithiri as college students
singing "Pasumai niraindha Ninaivugale by PS,TMS" in their farewell.
shivaji,Savithiri get separated due to usual reasons. Savithiri marries an army man.
Shivaji too joins Indian Army
and finally savithir falls prey in the trap set for shivaji.
SOTD - a great song by KD and b'fuly sung by TMS
thanks

very good song.. Is there any other song where the lyricist sings in the movie...
On the lighter side I was watching the trailer of a new movie called 'KALAM' starring Prabhu where he boasts that 'nadigar thilagathukku oru ratha thilagam maadhiri enakku kalam amainju irukku'.. i wonder when these actors will mature :)..

Kannadasan lives--for as he has declared, ‘he knows no death’. An immortal classic!
Interestingly, some years back, a liquor company adopted the first two lines of this song as its slogan for its ads that featured a glass cup and Silk Smitha!
A college function, and the song is announced as an ‘Omar Khayyam’ song, and Kannadasan appears on stage to sing it. Sivaji & Savitri are among the audience, and so is Nagesh. The interludes focus on Sivaji & Savitri who are frowning at each other, and Nagesh who nods his head vigorously in appreciation of the song. You can catch this incongruity in many old films- you can find the onlookers nodding in bliss during the interludes, when actually the singer is not singing, and there are no musicians in sight either!
National Movies’ Raththa Thilagam- 1963 was produced by Kannadasan to stir up patriotic feelings during the Chinese Aggression. It was directed by Dada Mirasi.
KVM and Kannadasan worked together to come up with an amazing album.
‘Thaazhamppoove thanga nilaave thalai yaen kunigiradhu’ (TMS/LRE) is such a mellow duet, where LRE, with her soft, cuddly tone, leaves the listener hankering for more. Thankfully Kannadasan saw infinite capacities in LRE, and dared to give her songs that have seldom come her way. Again, he gave her another song to be her usual boisterous jaunty self - ‘Vaadai kaatramma vaaliba manasa naalukku naala vaatuvathennamma’. ‘Pasumai niraindha ninaivugale’ (TMS/PS) still remains the nostalgic anthem for college farewells, ‘Mustafa Mustafa’ notwithstanding! ‘Buddhan vandha dhisaiyile por, punitha Gandhi mannile por’ (TMS & chorus) is a rousing war cry. Manorama’s ‘Pogaathe pogaathe en kanava’ is a hilarious parody of Ratnamala’s famous song from Veerappandiya Kattabomman. ‘On the Merry go round lets ride and roll’ is a great rock & roll song, fully in English! (Though the CDs / cassettes credit Usha Utup as the singer, I doubt if it is Usha)
However it is ‘pani padarndha malaiyin mele paduthirundhen silayai pole’(TMS), with its inspiring thoughts on nationalism and peace, that make us catch a glimpse of Kannadasan’s heart –his fervor that extended from the lofty ranges of the Himalayas to the great waves of Kanyakumari. He exclaims with agony at India’s bewilderment at the wanton attack by whom we considered a friend—yet he expresses optimism that things will turn out in our favor. Kannadasn seems to speak of himself again here too ‘Ennai marandhen—iravulagil serndhu vitten—kannai mella maraithu—karpanaiyil kalandhu vitten’

Part-time lyricists have done that, like Kamalhasan in Virumaandi. I don't think any full-time lyricist has appeared in a song, other than KD. Surprising that a person like VM who does a lot of self-promotion hasn't taken this up :)

VM indeed tried his luck in the "released in the interest of public" advertisement in Doordarshan a few years ago.
The ad was promotion of voice against suppression of female in the society. It has a song mouthed by various people like "mile sur mera thumhara". The song was "aeththanai yugangaL aeththanai yugangaL aengae pOyina aengaL mugangaL".
VM was "gracing the ad" with his typical 'stare at the camera through the top of eyes' recitation(?) the "sivan paadhi paarvadhi paadhi kaRpanai(?!) paadiya kaalam adhu; aaNum peNNum aedhilum paadhi aRiviyal sonna vaedham idhu".
