Saravanan,
lyrics for 'kavithaigaL sollavaa' by Pa. Vijay - both versions.,
sriram,
you didn't like that 'ammukkutti' part ? ;) Antha paattila enakku romba pidichcha vishayamae antha konjalthaan ... ;-)
Reg., KR's contribution for IR movies - I think he composed songs like NetRu vantha kaatRu (kaNmaNi), PaaNdiyanin raajjiyathhtil (pandiyan), Adiyae vanjikkodi (ponnumaNi) and a few others, He did BGM for KaNmaNi, UzaippaaLi and Amaithippadai ...

KR has miles to go to give a single, decent, wholesome song. He has been brilliant only in bits and parts like in the interludes of the SOTD. The high hopes he gave with Manickam died after NINI and (Kaadhala**2)

KRs best output seems to have come for IRs films :-) Kanaale kaadhal kavidhai from Athma is KR's composition I think. I read somewhere that he also did a part of the re-recording for Siraichaalai. And I suspect he probably had a hand in some of the mid-90s IR songs like "poongatrile kaalai podhu", "vandhaal vandhaal rajakumari" etc.set in a different ambience.

It must be ninaikindra paadhayil and not kannaale from Athma if I remember right.

Album is one of the fantastic series from KR. Infact during the time of album there was comparision in newtfmpage between Kadhal vanoli and Sonnalum ketpadillai. But KV is far better both by variety and freshness.
Ragasiyamai - one of his ever green song.

AY got 10/10? AY(o)!
what do you call this? a "wholesome " song!?

"Jana Gana Mana" sounds cool and hip. The bass is thoroughly enjoyable.

Though not a "wholesome" song, jana gana mana is a very youthful and different kinda song.. Rahman's singing is so different and yes, the song reminds us of 'columbus columbus' (particularly the whistling part in the 1st interlude)...i didnt like the glass breaking part being repeated in the song(it has been done in chandralekha and baba kichu kichu thaa already)...The tune is catchy and the 'oh yuva' part is awesome...

NagaS - sorry:)
to me, the konjal sounded too artificial and stood out like a sore thumb. especially when the singer does a rock style bit of "ammukutti, bommukutti.."
another KR-esque bit that I don't like is the unbelievably high octaves that he makes his female singers reach - for eg, in the charanam of "Desingu raaja" when the singer goes "en manadhu.. "

listened to the songs only once.
Adnan, Sujatha(?) song was ok, but then I don't understand why ARR used him for that song.
It almost feels like listening to "adikkithu kUliru thudikkuthu thaLiru" song :-)
(I mean the difference in male and female singing)
'yaakkai thiri' song seems to be ok as well.
10/10? certainly not me :-)

What separates Rehman from other MDs of the current lot is the ability to bring the modern feel for even familiar/known lines like "ini oru vidhi seivom".Was watching "Boys"this afternoon and got the same feel when i listened to "Mugam naga natpathu" and "KaRka kasadara".MR has let ARR down in many a song on picturisation like "Arabik kadaloram"and some songs of Dil Se and Kannathil Muthamittal.Let hope for th best.
A sure fire winner this song is.Thoroughly enjoyable.ARR has done it again........Where are the David Friths to eat their posts?

this album by rehman is great as usual except for 'dol dol' which is a bit annoying rap.
really loved 'nenjam ellam' and 'sandai kozhi'.

I felt the "Sandai Kozhi" song is THE SONG for Swarnalatha's voice. Sila pattu ketta ivanga paadina amsama irukumnu thonum. I miss swarna's voice in this song.
- From: T (@ 12.33.141.40)
on: Fri Mar 26 16:24:06 EST 2004
'sandai kozhi' if sung by swarna would be very much similar to 'ulundhu vedhaikkaiyile' in mudhalvan..
'dol dol' is like the 'love check' song of parthaale paravasam.. sometimes rahman gets carried away with the mixing :))..

NagaS, thanks for the confirmation. 'Netru vandha kaatru' is an alluring duet. The Hindi version, however, was disfigured by Asha's 'Ayyayyo ayyayyo', which seemed totally incongruous in the context.
Kartihik Raja (in my opinion) could have chosen better singers for many of his songs. Singers like Vibha Sharma and Kavita Paudwal messed up his better works.
'Jana gana mana' has a catchy beat. Its hindi version 'Dhakka laga bukka' (also sung by ARR & Karthik, lyrics by ARR's favourite Mehboob) has become very popular here, and played frequently in the local radio stations.
Btw, hope Madhushree is not going to be flooded with tamil offers!

A reason for me to post in this thread at last! ;)
rags,
Swarnalatha.. hmm, hadnt given it a thought. But I felt Chithra Sivaram would have suited it perfectly. Right up her alley, this song.
If Madhushree hadnt muffed up w/ the pronunciation, she'd have had some nice reviews flooding her. But now that SHE's the kinda singer that every MD is looking for (hell-w/-tamil-it's-the-voice-and-talent-that-counts), she'll be pretty happy w/ the alternative. Offers wud be flooding in now. :)

Do I have reasons to suspect that the Indo-pak series has some kind of influence on this selection? ;)

DISGRESSION
Who was the lyricist for Padagotti? Was it Kannadasan or Vaali? Coz in the NEW cassette Vaali has been included as a lyricist. So, just wondering.

Song of the Day: maNappaarai maadu katti from makkaLaip peRRa magarasi.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/manappaarai.rm
- Sung by T.M.S. Music by K.V.Mahadevan. Lyrics by Maruthakasi.
- Suresh saw this song as his Song of the century; He wrote:
"MaNappArai mAdu katti, mAyavaram eaRu pootti" - if ever there is a song so reflective of the (fading) culture of thamizh chamudhAyam, this is it. MaruthakAsi's immortal lines show you what collective living is all about, how different communities co-existing collectively bring a harmony to everyday life that seems almost imaginary - tholaiNdhu pOi koNdirukkum thamizh vAzhkkai muRaikku oru eduthukkAttu.
Sadly, tomorrow's generation, and a good bulk of today's also I'm afraid, can never understand the import of what are seemingly simple lines. A close parallel is MahAkavi Bharathi's "Sinthu nathiyin" that shows how much of a cliche 'national integration' has been reduced to.
- Manisegaran writes in the KVM thread:
By 1957 APN and KR Ramasamy had already become very close friends. They started a film company called Sri Lakshmi Pictures and made a few movies together. The very famous Makkalai Petra Maharasi which had star value-Sivaji Ganesan, MN Nambiyar, Kannaamba, K. Banumathy, K Sarangapani, VK Ramasamy, MN Rajam etc. Story and dialogue by APN. The famous songs here were:
1. Manappaarai Maadu Katti by TMS. Maruthakazi told me in 1988 that this song was a true patriotic song as it made mention of many areas of Tamilnadu, and was sung in every remote village of Tamilnadu by people of all walks in life.
2. Sonna Pechai Kekkanum Munnum Pinnum Paakkanum by K.Banumathy. This was another hit song
3. Vanthathu Yaarunnu Unakku Theriyumaa by K Banumathy- also a good song
4. O Malliyakka- a famous dance song
5. Adi Tharaburam Tambaram Un Thalaiyiley Kanagamabaram- by SC Krishnan and Ratnamala
6. Poravaley Poravaley Ponnurangam by TMS and Banumathy
7. Makkalai Petra Maharasi by Jikki
8. Onru Serntha Anbu Maarumaa by PB Sreenivos and Sarojini. This is the first song of PB Sreenivas under KVM.
This film was another big hit. KVM proved that he could compose excellent folk music too. It was following this film in 1957 that many approached KVM for village based songs.

Great Song .. This song was inspiration for many MD's when they Tried to compose folk songs and Great job by TMS (only he could sing these kind of songs with ease)
KVM - Thirai isai thilagam - these are enough to praise him
A.Marutha kasi - a renowned Lyricist who could write folk songs with ease ..but under utilized/under rated in TFM
