i think "copying" is there for a long time in tamil film history. Here we discuss the tamil songs copied from others.

I dont think so. KR working in some advt would have surely made news - at least in Tamil mags. BTW, which advt brought KR and Priyan together??
I know for sure that Harris Jeyaraj has composed for the Coke family of advts...including the coke advt starring Vijay (old and new) and now the Sinram-Fanta advt. Directed by Rajeev Menon IIRR.

Karthik S,
Nane than is right - its Tide Detergent Powder Ad. In the AD itself they say Music Composed by : Karthik Raja,
One more Karthik Raja Ad is 'EngaL Desam' (Ram Kashyap finance) - it was a good one !

Karthik, Naguva Nayana ad version is not smart as the original song. But, good tune choice by Lowe.
Did any of you notice this strange ad: SKYYBLUE, it is a soda or something. ad runs in the US. I don't if you see it in India. BUT, the theme is: ORU KUNGUMA CHENGA MALAM tune and a harmonica or accordion follow through!!!!! It has been running for some time now, just thought of bringing it up.
Is IR tunes going to be the trend for ads????????????????

IMO the reason this Lintas guy is elusive in his answer could be that if he openly admits to copying IR's hits, he may run into copyright problems!
Not that Indian film or ad fraternity was ever bothered about the issue of copyright.
At least they can give credit.. about which the least said the better.
The sad part is: When a popular Hindi song is used in a ad-jingle, it's very obvious and people know who the song belongs to. Whereas they are absolutely unaware of these melodies from the South and as a result, the jingle composer brigade goes scot-free!

This is about a Hindi song and I'd explain the reson for posting it in this forum at the end of this message. In Ram Gopal Verma's Mast composer Sandeep Chowta had credited 2 foreign composers for a particular song. The song was 'Main tere dil ki mallika'. It was credited as "Courtesy: J Hornet and K Lewis" in the album sleeve. Not much is known about these 2 till date.
Sandeep is known for such antics. His credit for the Pyar Tune Kya Kiya number 'Raundhe hain' went something like this..."Courtesy: W Killar". I had to do an extensive net check to find out that the actual original. I dont think this way of crediting helps anybody or can make copying legitimate.
Coming back to the Mast song...I heard the song all over again with great interest. It reminded me a old Tamil song too! - 'Aaha mella nada mella nada' from Pudhiya Paravai with music by Viswanathan Ramamurthy. It was the 3rd line both the songs which takes a interesting turn that reminded me of this old Tamil number. Just listen to both the numbers...you'd know what I'm talking about!
I'm trying my best to find the original of the Mast number. In all probabilities that 'J.Hornet' could be James Horner, the famous composer with many Hollywood bgms to his credit!
Check out the 2 songs here...

Karthik, I listend the masti song just a minute ago. But I dont find any resemblance with "Mella Nada Song".

The line 'Mullai malar paadham nogum' and the third line sung in the Mast song sounded similar to me! I'm not implying that Sandeep has lifted from Vis-Ram or Vis-Ram's song itself is lifted. The fact is that Sandeep has a source and I'm trying to find it. Its incidental that I stumbled upon this Vis-Ram song similarity.

I use the word inspired instead of copied because the end result has turned out pretty good in some cases!!
the song paartha nyabagam illayo is inspired by the dean martin hit 'sway'. Especially the first line.
The song palinginal oru maaligai from vallavanukku vallavan is inspired from Frenesie recorded by Artie Shaw.
Music director Dhina has copied 'thousand miles' from Sting's Desert Rose album for his song 'kaadhalagi kaadhalagi' in the recent film King.
The song hello mr.edhirkatchi from Iruvar is reminiscent of the beat adopted in the song After Midnight by JJ Cale. And the yodelling of course is so similar to the one in Malar enra mugham from kadhalikka neramillai
The song 'Malligaipoo jaadhi roja' a really old song and sung by Balasaraswathi(?) is inspired by La Paloma.
Ilayaraja's bababa bababare (pudhu mapillaiku) from aboorva sagodharagal has its origins in a song with the same title by Beach Boys.
The song Appa Pakkam Vandha amma mutham thandha -(forget the film - but sung by TMS and a child singer) is lifted from the old hit Mama - she loves papa...Papa he loves mama (or viceversa!!)

This is not TFM but TF itself. When I was in school, (around 1971-72), a drama named 'Casual Leave' was very popular in Madras. (Those days, it was considered fashionable to name Tamil dramas in English!)I don't remember the author's name. The story starts with the hero, a clerk, taking one day casual leave for watching a football match, where his boss sees him. He then creates an imaginary twin brother and slowly all hell breaks loose! Yeah! You guessed it right! This story , in toto, came as 'golmaal' in Hindi and as 'thillumullu' in Tamil. When 'thillumullu' was released, I read somewhere that the poor author approached KB but KB was helpless as he had bought the original from Hindi. No one knows how 'Casual Leave' in Tamil, so smoothly got smuggled into Bollywood! (perhaps via Bengali!)
Some copying this! I don't think there's any match to this in the history of TF or TFM

V Ramesh, that's not the end of that- Thillu mullu came in 1981. In 1982, there came a film called 'Irattai manithan'- starring an old SSR, trying unsuccessfully to look young, and Latha. What's the connection? You guessed it- a very slightly modified version of the same 'Thillu mullu'!!!! Can anyone explain this?

Sudha,
Most of what you've added is in my site with audio clips! But thanks for the leads on After Midnight, La Paloma et all. And I think you'd stir the hornet's nest if you utter any more about the Beach Boys-Aboorva Sagotharargal connection.
Frankly I think there's nothing similar between Barbara Ann and the AS song....the initial humming might seem similar but I can very comfortably dismiss it as mere coincidence.

like you said, there is only a similarity in the initial humming and like I said earlier, some of the 'inspired' tamil songs are really good and I have no complaints!! (palinginal and paartha nyabagam are among my eternal favourite songs)
I really have no intention of stirring any hornets nests as my as I discovered this forum very recently which is why my entry into this discussion is so recent and may have points that have been discussed and much flogged loooong ago!!!
Is there a similar forum for inspired Hindi songs- do let me know as I am interested.

Hi guys,
I think there is a similarity between MSV's Vaazha Ninaithaal Vaazhalam and RDB's Tumse Achcha Kaun Hai.
Anyone can enlighten further?

Yeah the new reynolds ad jingle sounds pretty good. And the ad format and way it has been handled looks a lot like Balki's ads like Idea. Could be him!
Sudha,
There's no specific thread/message brd to discuss HFM copies, but you can check 2 places...
The newsgroups RMIM - Try via google groups...look for rec.music.indian.misc
My site...at www.iespana.es/i2fs/
In fact majority of plagiarism related messages in RMIM would be from me, at least in recent posts. There were quite a few people actively discussing this about 2-3 years ago, from where I collected majority of my site's info!

Recent inspirations..
ARR in the movie KM.. Amutha song interlude is a copy of Amelie french tune.
IR in the movie Ivan.. Just three or four seconds opening music of Appadi Pakkardenna is from the opening of the tune 'Kalidescop of mathematics' from the movie beautiful mind. Listen to the opening of both of them. You will find it interesting comparisons.

JJ:
Amelie is a French movie, not a tune. If you're talking about a bit in the bgm, please say so! BTW, I've heard many IR songs in the bgm of English films...for instance the 'to do to do to do' kind of humming features in a old'ish Robert Di Nero movie as also Val Kilmer's recent movie Salton Sea! But I dont take them seriously 'cos they dont last more than a few seconds.

I have seen that movie Amelie.. what i meant was tune from that movie.
