Whatever: By saying that FM songs need not follow the rules laid by carnatic, I'm not saying that it lacks grammar. I'm in no way belittling FM. At the same time, the aspects of FM grammar that you mentioned - situation, mood... are present in carnatic too. IMHO, these aspects are more like boundary conditions and constraints rather than how-to-do-it, how-not-to-do-it grammatic rules. All IMHO. And thanks for feeding my ego and making my day (night!!).
Ram: with UN, SS et al , it is more like the listeners not understanding the lyrics that they are singing :)

s0,
sila samayan the listener can misunderstand the lyrics like "periyamma poNNai rasikkalaam thappillai" while the actual lyrics is "piriyamaana poNNai rasikkalaam thappillai";-)

Halo Whatever,
Thanks to friends like you, this thread is becoming more and more interesting now. More and more informative and juicy to read. You see,who is a purist? Probably you have not come across classical musicians with closed mind who do not know even a bit in film music but deride film music &speak ill of it.I very frequently come across such persons who call themselves purists and going for unalloyed classicism. Third-rate hypocrites! If you want I can even name them. MSV once clearly told me that his work is only to embellish a tune without minding even a bit about anniya swarams or minniya swarams. I repeat, in most of the cases MDs do not even know the names of the ragas. Influenced by some tunes heard before or by some inspiration within themselves, they compose. MSV's most of the compositions in Sindhu Bhairavi,IRs most...in Mohanam,if one analyses, testify to this. To satisy a lay man (note not the elite) why should they worry about grammar & syntax. We people know how well he did for Pattum Bharathamum. What is the use? The film was a flop. The songs are remembered only be a very very few. NOw the FM scenario is totally hopeless particularly after the advent of ARR. MSV could not even enjoy the patronage for his beautiful songs which his successor enjoyed because of the change in trend overall during late 70s. Agree? I pity the classical musicians today who crave to sing for films under ARR just to become popular overnight and to gather some good crowd for the concerts. Today you know, right from Semmangudi to some Master/Baby singer, everybody is ready to sing for ARR. Damn with this third rate O-podu trend.

Can anyone suggest the raaga for the song "Shakthi Kodu..." from Baba ?. Especially the "Thayum Neeye... Thandhayum Neeye... " part

R.Sundar :
I indeed have come across classical musicians who pride themselves on being 'purists'. I am not interested in names that you drop. That is neither here nor there.
You have still not addressed the issues that I brought up. If you do not give a jot about 'purists', why at all bring them into this discussion?
Saying that most of MSV's compositions are in Sindhubhairavi and IR's in Mohanam is, to say the least, an over-simplification. But each, in his own way, has brought out the flavour of these ragas, would you not agree?
And, pray, why are you bringing ARR into this?

So Sundar, what are your thoughts and opinion on the usage of SindhuBhairavi in FM - by various MD's right from SVV to ARR....

R Sundar,
The Anann oru kovil song does seem to have shades of Charukesi.
Sorry, I mistook it for another Shivaji's movie. The name Annan Oru Kovil itself is self-explanatory ;)
Nandkauns from what I found is a combination of jOg and Malkauns(HindhOLam).
Anyway, I don't understand what this mistake of mine has to do with my rasanai of the SPB song, 'kadalil AlaigaL pongum'? :)
Though I agree with you on some of the points, I think you are over-simplifying the MSV-Sindhu Bhairavi and IR-Mohanam fixation. I can understand such an argument for the music of an S.A. Rajkumar or a Sirpi. There are as many songs of IR (and perhaps more) in KeeravANi, ShankarabharaNam and KalyANi as there are in Mohanam.
Also, I can buy the argument that the MD may not be paying attention to what raga it is when he composes for say a Mohanam or a ShankarabharaNam. But how can he not consciously use a raga like MalayamArutam, Rasika ranjani, KanakAngi, pAvani, Dharmavathy, Hemavathy, Gowri ManoHari, VagulAbharaNam, Rasikapriya, ChitrAmbari, Samudrapriya, etc.?
S. Atre,
Here are more Sindhubhairavi numbers of IR to add to that list:
Oh VeNNilAve - Anandha Kummi
MAnE ThEnE Kattippudi- Udaya Geetham
Kadalila ezhugira alaigal - Chembaruthi
PoongAtru Pudhithanathu - MoondrAm piRai
Muthirai IppOdhu- Uzhaippali
Maniyosai kEttu - PayanangaL Mudivathillai

Peter Pan:
The above list already contains:
Oh VeNNilAve - Anandha Kummi
MAnE ThEnE Kattippudi- Udaya Geetham
Maniyosai kEttu - PayanangaL Mudivathillai
By this time you should be able to read lists. What is this? Didn't expect this from a guy who knows nandkauns :)
