I think non-tamils sometimes speak better than native tamils! I mean just look at TV nowadays. They can't pronounce the z sounds at all. Whats worse is thay think its so cool! Sometimes you need a outsider to apreciate a language no matter how bad their pronounciation atleast u know they r trying their best! btw ARR Love the the songs frm rhythm! a note to all those film producers out there stop portraying us NRI's as stupid arrogant and non patriotics ppl! We arent wht u portray on TV so go out there and do some real research ok!

not world music of the deep forest kind kiru. music of the world kind, as in music outside indian purview. and if u dont trust his integrity fully, who stopped you my friend?
anyway what would u think is the ideal reply to that question? delve on maurice jarre's compositions? thats not what that comment was made for, i suppose, subash was interviewing rahman and made a passing comment on murice jarre's music. what did rahman do? accept it gracefully and go ahead.
what would IR do if subash was interveiwing him and says that the complexity of some of his compositions resemble beethovan's? Should IR delve into beethovan's compositions and patterns? I dont think so. hope the IR example satisfies you.
did u expect arr to fight back saying that he didnt have any shade of jarre??

Dont get offended Karthik. I have respect for ARR's talents. He came up with a format which was very novel in Indian film music. I think you will be stretching your logic too much if you claim Maurice Jarre does World Music. When ARR refers to World Music he refers to non-Western music set to westernised beats/style (not to be confused with Western Classical). What did I expect ARR to answer to that question ? 'I am a fan of Maurice Jarre. He is a great composer. I followed this style'. Why didnt ARR answer this way ?

ARR concert in Toronto, canada
To start on a positive note, the complete show was 100% live. There were no prerecorded songs, no fake singings etc. The concert was held in skydome, one of the biggest stadium in toronto, canada. The 50,000 seater stadium was half full at 7.45 pm , was 3/4th full by 8 pm when the show started. There were people travelling from as far as Arizona US to watch the show . The audience were predominantly Srilankan tamilians in addition to punjabese, gujarathis, malayalis and Andhrites. Couple of chinese and white faces were also spotted.
The show started at sharp 8 pm. Around 5 girls dressed like cheerleaders opened the show playing instruments like drums, guitar etc.At the end of this music ARR dressed in a black suit and a white shirt(no tie) descended from the sky onto the stadium and the show started with theme music of thaal.(well javed jeffrey was blurting something before the start of the show apart from mentioning that this show is completely live without any prerecorded CDs playing behind the scene).
This was followed by SPB singing 'oruvan oruvan mudhalaaLi' in his usual style and charisma. SPB was dressed in a grey suit and a black tshirt(looked like the same suit he wore during his concert in detroit that was held last month).
Remaining songs heard in the show:
Tamil songs:
ThaNiye thaNnathaniye-Shanakar Mahadeven
Sandhana thendralai-SM
Muqabla-SM and Anupama
Snehidanae-Sadhana and Shrinivas
Chandralekha-Anupama
Mustafa-ARR
Hindi songs:
Que se sara sara sara(pukaar)-SM and kavitha subramaniam. SM was dressed in a black suit and kavitha in a sky blue churidar
Hey ajnabi (dilse)-sujatha and Udit narayan-Udit was in a ink blue suit and sujatha in a white churidar
Suntha hai mera kudhaa-Udit,Kavitha and Dominique
Kehna hai kya(Bombay)-chitra. Chitra was in a blue churidar too.
Chanda re(Sapnay)-Hariharan and Sadhana. Hari was initially dressed in a saamiyar color shirt and later changed to greysuit while sadhana was in a blue churidar
Kaise(taal)-Hari haran
Dil hai bechain me(taal)-udit and vibha sharma
Dilsere(dilse)-ARR
Ishq binaa kya(taal)-sujatha,Shrinivas and ARR. Shrinivas was dressed in a cream kurtha suit
Rang de(??)-Chitra
Raptha jogi(taal)-sukhwinder,sadhana.Sukhwinder was attired in a black safari suit.
Chaiyya chaiyya(dilse)-sukhwinder,Domique
Hindi and tamil mixed:
1)telephone mani pol-HH,Kavitha
2)kadhal rojave-SPB,Sujatha
3)humma humma-Clinton??
An english song from 'Bombay dreams' by some carol
Highlights of the show:
1)Anupamas 'chandralekha'. She did an amazing job in reproducing the song to complete perfection
2)Dominques humming in 'sunthaa hai mera kudha'. These 2 girls have lots of unutilized talents
3)Sadhanas tamil in 'snehidane'. It was more than perfect and much better than the original. Probably ARR or other tamil literate singers must have helped her during the rehearsal.
4)Hollywood actor Steven Seagals surprise visit to the show. He appeared on
the stage limping(due to an accident) and was full of praise of ARR. Looks like both will be working together soon.
5)Several canadian parliament members were present in the show. A letter from Canadas Prime Minister was read by a female cabinet minister(who pronounced Rahman as Rahmun).
6)There were not unwanted praise for ARR(who comes across to be a very shy guy smiling all the time)
Now for the sour points:
1)Both Hari and kk lost shruthi while singing 'telephone'
2)Sujatha lost taalam not once but twice while singing 'ishq binaa' and her hindi pronunciation is terrible.
Looks like this song was never rehearsed as shrinivas started on a wrong note and the song itself was cut short by two charanams
3)SM lost his voice as he started 'sandhana thendralai'
4)Chitra could have sung atleast one tamil song.
5)I had the worst seat :- )
6)Poor sound system in the auditorium
7)hariharan dancing while singing..it was highly
irritating
8)There were girls and guys dancing on the stage for several songs. I could clearly see chitra and kavitha werent comfortable with people dancing around them
As I mentioned before the audience were predominantly tamilians .They started losing their patience as more and more hindi songs were churned out. They started applauding only for tamil songs. From next time ARR should start conducting separate shows for tamil and hindi speaking audience.
Features I liked:
A short unplugged music was held with only ARR playing the piano. SPB,Hari, chitra, sujatha and kavitha appeared on the stage together. SPB started singing Anjali anjali pushpanjali and chitra followed with her excellent rendition of the humming that comes in between the anjali song. She then sang one line(her only tamil line in the entire show) from anjali anjali. HH followed with his flawless rendition of nilaa kaygiradhu(SPB kissed him on his cheek) and sujatha followed by singing 2 lines(hindi and tamil resly) from netru illadha maatram. This was followed by an aalapana by Kavitha ending it with 'katre ne vaasal vandhai' . She sang it so well that the applause was going on for few minutes.
There was also a jugalabandhi with pazhanivel, drums shivamani and ARR.
The show came to a conclusion with all the singers singing 'jana gana mana'. Though most of the audience were not Indian citizens they gave respect to our national anthem by raising on their feet till the jana gana was done. No one left the auditorium. Hats off to the canadian audience.
My personal opinion about the entire show.
It was good but not satisfying.

Ramki-- it looks like your review will boost the demand for tickets in Bayarea and La shows.
Good job.I wish you had a better seat to tell us more.

Ramki/fan: Last night (Oct 1) Sivamani performed with Hariprasad Chaurasia in Kansas City. He mentioned that he "performed" with ARR in Toront0 for 4 hours. He conveyed that it was LIVE. I guess the remaining 2 shows will be live too - LA and SF.
Fan: You were right in predicting that ARR is a quick learner. He has reacted to the crowd demands and made his show live instead of tracks. I still feel sorry for the NY fans.

6 Thamizh songs = $55
At least when you're mugged you feel that some poor person got your money.

U,
step 1 he finally went live,
step 2 : wait and see, Tamil songs will increase.
IMHO:
I am ready to pay for watching arr, sivamani, vikku, spb, chitra, hariharan, srinivas, sujatha..etc etc perform live, .
I used to pay Rs 2500 in India (and about $120+ here )for L.Shanker,L.Subramaniyam and zahir live shows, We pay for the skills,
I feel when these talented folks perform live, there is no language barrier.
seeing your posting I remember dharumi's words. :)

K.S Ravikumar's unwanted pride
In the AR Rahman's concert in Toronto K.S Ravikumar was also found among the audience. One of the audiences went to see him and asked for his autograph. He turned down the fan saying "If I put an autograph for you then I'll have to put autographs for everybody" as if there were a lot of people waiting in long queues for his autograph. Actually only one fan approached him for his autograph. K.S Ravikumar was so proud and posed himself to be a cheap villain kinda thing.
These movie guys have to learn a lesson. We should not recognise them in public and give them any special importance. Too much of movie craze are making those movie people's head weigh too much.

Language is no barrier when I'm listening to an original composition in Greek. Language is a barrier when I have to listen to a Hindi song in place of a Thamizh original whose lyrics are etched in my memory.
