(Ravi: my search on this topic produced a result with a thread on the same topic, but i was neither able to post anything nor i was able to retrieve it from the archives. So i do start a new thread here. However if you find a workaround to get it back, please let me know. I will post it appropriately)
If there should be some reason for me to feel nostalgic about india, the primary reason would be the kinda songs that i miss. Those days of my teens, freaking out in the hostel ,dancing in the auditorium, boozing after elections, friday night movies in the theaters on mount road, saturday morning laziness, all had one underlying factor to enjoy about , to go crazy about, and that is music. As i was brought up in a time when Raja was going great guns, I became an addictive lover of his music. Even as a kid when the movie annakkiLi was released, the song sonthamillai bandhamillai vAduthu by PS caused melancholy, kinda somber feeling in my mind. The kookooooo, kookooooo birds humming, melody, lullabying effect, soulful rendering by PS causes some dejected feeling in your mind . Also the song annakkiLi onna thEduthu has haunting rhythym in it, its acoustical effect makes you feel as if this is played in a neighbouring village . Raja was creative from day 1. Then those numbers like nAn pEsa vanthEn, oru nAL unnodu oru nAL were something that TFM had never seen before and hence was the overwhelming support for Raja . The violin interludes were so rejoicing and the sound of clock 'tik tik tik' in the interludes was certainly creative . The interludes of senthoorap poovE with violin, guitar and fulte pieces are still in my memory. Whenever i listened to songs like this by Raja, it brings an imagination of a village with green grass, transverse waves, river water, hard rocks... in your mind. The number sevvanthi poo mudicha has an amazing second interlude with excellent orchestration of violins, flute and tabla. such a holistic, concerted effect of instruments was probably first of its kind at that time in TFM.
In the song adi peNNE (muLLum malarum), Raja has done excellent piece of orchestration by using a variety of instruments including flute, xylaphone and created some jet-paced prelude and interludes. This kind of masterliness in orchestration was certainly innovative for TFM. He created some haunting melodies in the movies kizhakke pogum rayil and katrinile varum geetham. kanden engum poomagal nattiyam and kovil mani osai are master pieces by maestro for their second interludes in both songs.
Two songs come to my mind that are unique in their narrative nature of their tune while depicting the 'sunrise' and morning glories of village . They are puttham puthu kazhai and solaik kuyile. I was astounded by the creativity that raja has shown in describing the brisk morning which i think hardly anybody had done before. The second interlude in puththam puth causes an imagination of a real sunrise. And let me also throw some light on an evening freshness. And there comes to my mind the song AgAya gangai which starts with a very rhythmic tabla and humming by SJ. The tune is so narrative of an evening time duet in places like park , beach and so on. Whenever i listen to this song, my memories take me through an 'evening at marina beach'. And what about a crispy , cold 'margazhi' night ? You want to enjoy the mood, listen to ninaithal inikkum from kalyana raman. The interludes are so amazing and gives you a chill feeling and there comes to my mind the angel in white dress with that mayakkum vizhigaL. Wow!, i am FLAT. Raja got my wicket there!
Speaking of 'mayakkam',a song comes to my mind that starts with chorus humming, drums, trumphet to create mood for a guy who has been dragged forcibly into drug abuse and becomes an addict. Raja's vivid imaginary skills once again scales himalayas. It is vanam keezhe vanthal enna . The interludes are just awesome with guitar, drums and violins and makes you really float or fly in the air. There was another movie thanga magan in the same year in which featured an excellent melody rathiriyil poothirukkum . I remember another song in which Raja made SPB hum in a mind-boggling manner together with violin. In the second interlude of the song vaa vaa pakkam vaa , pakkam vara vetkama SPB modulates his voice starting low and reaching very high in the pitch together with violin so eloquently and merges with the charanam (vazhvathu etharku vayyagathil sugangalai vazhkayil perathane) . Remember, SPB was there in TFM for atleast 10 years before Raja came into picture. Nobody ever imagined they could use SPB in such a creative manner.
Innovative tunes by use of violins is a piece of cake for Raja. Numbers like en vAzhvilE varum anbe vaa , poththi vachcha malliga mottu , rakkamma kaiya thattu are examples that speak for themselves. En vazhvile and rakkmma have some explosive starts with violins creating the mood of the song and poththi vachcha makes you feel the melody, rhythm in its preluding violin piece itself. The bridging between violin and nadhaswaram by use of guitar(s) piece is so elegantly done in that song. Speaking of elegant display, another song comes to my mind where Raja uses SPB once again in an innovative manner to hum together with drums in the song mEgam kottattum aatam undu in enakkuL oruvan. The second interlude has excellent roll of the drums with SPB in a high pitch and drops it down to a low, smooth Ahhh.... mazhai vanda pOthu.
I can go on and on. will be back!

Hi ,
Satish:
There are 2 two tracks for this song, one by kamal & one by SPB
BTW I saw Desiyageetham : mmmm....where is raja in that I do not know...only one song "Na va ka pata" is worth, others are total junk, rerecording .... a total waste.
