Friends, I am still continuing to reel from the impact of the melodious songs and backgrounds score of Apoorva Saghotharagal. I was also just watching Illamai Oonjalaadikirathu. The melodies, the variety and the sheer perfection in my opinion out shines best of MSV melodies in Ulagam Suttrum Valibhan or Ninaithile Innikkum. I may even say that MJs Beat it Just Beat it of 1983 grammy winning song must have a 50% take of the Yennadi Meenakshi song. To say that IR brought a melodious foottapping number(that was the craze at all the schools from primary to high school, and colleges) was ways ahead of even the best composers from other parts of the world.

IMHO, I think Mahadev was fabulous for the original songs that failed to appear in the movie.
The gem was 1) Rhim Jhim by Suresh Wadkar and Asha Bhosle. This song has exremely melodious and heart-rending flute passages.
2) Dilwale by Asha Bhosle where Raja heavily used the sequencer and Asha Bhosle did a fabulous job
3) Fikar Na Kar Pyaare by Asha Bhosle which was rehashed into Tamil in Guru Shishyan.
The songs were recorded around August 1987 and the movie was released in 1989 after two years.
I was present for the recording of the Dilwale Song and heard it in the Studio. I was waiting for the movie to release for a whole two years.
Uttam Singh was the arranger and AR Rahman played the keybord along with Viji Manuel.
When all the musicians heard the song after the instruments had been recorded. Rahman remarked (his own words) : "It's (Dilwale) come out very well"
The songs may have been a whitewash in terms of record sales. But as far as the original music goes, it was a great film.
What happened was that the final cut of the film was heavily edited(even Dilwale) so much so that the song had the interludes chopped off, To add insult to injury, The gem "Rhim Jhim" never even appeared in the movie and the movie was an absolute Dabba movie.
What appeared in the final cut was some songs that were not even scheduled when the original recordings were done.
I know for sure that Raja was magnificent in the movie's original songs. If he had even an ounce of Rahmans acumen for business, the songs could have been a major milestone for him in Hindi. Unfortunately history proved to be different.

KSS, are these songs available on the web? I know the one of the songs was an unreleased tamil movie number; aadai kondu aada by SPS and Deepan Chakravarthi.
Anyway, I was also tracking the movie release, it seems it never even ran a week in Bombay!

"You are famous all over India -- when you compose for Hindi films, the whole of India listens. But when you compose music for such a small state, the audience is smaller. Still, why did you accept this film? "
What an attitude! Who is this Shoba Warrier. The name sounds malayalee, still she so callously makes s uch a statement.

KSS,
Would this ("mahadev") be the movie where IR had to go to the court for a dispute with the producer(Raj.N.Sippy)?I know there was major tiff with copyright and the producer played tantrums with payments.

SR:
The MD for 'Basera' is RDBurman. (it must be a typo??)
This is a movie that was a remake of 'Kalangalil aval Vasantham'. I think Rakhee played Sri Vidhya's role.

Lata sang a Telugu song for IR
'Tella Cheera ku' - a duet with SPB in the movie 'Aakhari Poraatam'.
Udhaya, 'Paaramal Paartha', I think, is also by Chitra.

Got a mild surprise when I went to park the vaNdi after lunch today.. the song `pEsakkoodAdhu' (adutha vArisu, SPB/PS) was playing from our company secy's vaNdi (a maLayaLi who does not know MY because he spent 1-40 in Kolkata)...well, it was his driver's choice:-)
What a lovely song, ahead of time...the pallavi is like today's POP (reggae?) but the interludes are exclusive Raja territory (folky WCM) and the saraNam is back to POP (rock?)...so much of enjoyable things in just one song...& still not taking months to compose...rAjA, rAjA thAn!
Felt like taking a kutty interview with the driver on why he likes IR's music, but kadamai azhaikkavE...

Recent examples of exemplary usage of female chorus in the songs 'Undhan Raajiyathil' film Aandaanadimai and 'Kann irendil etri vaikkum' film Avathaaram, the blending of IR's sanskrit sloka with the female chorus singing in an altogether differnt tune, but still maintaining the harmony ,in the song 'Thenralai kandu kollu maane' , film Nilave mugham kaatu, stand testimony to IR's creativity in the 90's era.

I wish to bring to your notice an obscure song "paadhi kaLLil mayakkam" - SJ and Kamal from the film Shankarlal. Listen to the way the guitar is played imagatively in a drawl mode to indicate the intoxicated mood , the intersting way in which the tabla and veena are used in the interludes and last but not the least, the tune is also melodious. IMO, the best , freak out song by Kamal till date.

And I would like to bring to notice another obscure song, "Kaana Karungkuyil" from the film Paandi Durai. You look at the song title and figure, Oh, here's just another folk song slapdashed together with no novelty whatsoever. But ahh, our Ilayaraja is an unpredictable guy! You gotta hear the song to believe it! Check out the interludes, which are predominantly Sudhasaveri raagam, and then compare it with the singing, predominantly in Bhagesri raagam. Fantastic!!
