I'm a new visitor to this website. I couldn't see anyone discussing about Vani Jayaram's songs.
Let me start this one.(It had been there previously pls. forgive me!)
"Ezhu swarangalukkul ethanai paadal..
Ithaya surangathul ethanai kelvi...
Vaazhum manitharukkul ethanai salanam.."
Wow! Beautiful voice!

Yes AVR, it that is why VJ is a Class(ical) ACT!
I guess musicians who KNOW the SaReGa of Music prefer her to anybody else...which can't be said for most MDs or Singers today. A sad comment on the state of Indian film music in general...All this Anu-Rahmanism as I call it!
Anyway, the song in the film Kaithiyin Diary was an "authentic" cabaret number as it was (I believe) picturised on Anuradha - the heir to "Silk" Smitha's sleazy throne back in the 80s.
Unfortunately, I have no links to the list I provided. I have most of the songs (in my collection ) but not all...
A good malayalam number (to get you hunting the net again) is from the film Rasa Leela:
"Aiyeelam Paadhathu Penne...Kiliye Kilikiliye"

Naaz:
I agree with Anu-ism - its awful. But AR Rahman is a genius (thats the secon point we must disagree upon.)Though Rahman has been much maligned on the newtfmpage, his genius cannot be doubted.
Secondly, classical musicians have worked with other singers too. They took Vani, right- but they have worked several times with other singers too.

Neel: I heard this song for the first time when I last visited India - it's from cinema paithiyam (remake of Guddi). As the name suggests, the story is about a girl obsessed with movies - that's the first thing I remember and always kolai pannufy the song:-)
Don't aattukkaara alamElu/paalaabhishekam have some solos & duets by VJ?

AVR,
Rahman is perhaps a genius - although I would suggest that his "genius" lies more in the Orchestration of his music than the compostions themselves - and his "genius" is influenced by other forms of electronic technology. This is not a fault or lack - his melodies have appealed to millions - and yet to a discerning ear his songs can seem derivative or formally limited in their "classical" imaginings.
But the point I was making was about "formal" training in the classical arts (music, dance, drama) - all of which are easily distinguishable from the "populist" commodification of these that are represented (collectively) in film. Indeed, many music directors with a "classical" background have used other singers besides Vani Jairam. And that is to their credit. However, one does have to acknowledge that when it has come to the essaying of an "essential" classical composition in commercial tamil/telegu/malayalam films MOST music directors have sought Vani Jairam for the task. S.Janaki, P.Suseela and Chitra are all fine singers in their own right - and I do not mean to detract in anyway from their contribution to film music. What is interesting though, is VJ's list of songs includes more classical (Karnatak style) numbers) especially solos - right from Pt. Ravi Shankar all the way to Illaiyaraja and Devarajan.
The only reason I can come up with for this Vani Jairam is a singer with FORMAL training in both the traditions of classical music - Karnatak and Hindustani - and hence her FELICITY and GRASP of the nuances is a boon for many such songs, and those who compose them.
I hope this clarifies any ambiguity that may have been part of my previous message.
Now a question for you: What do you think makes Vani Jairam a unique singer? Let's get beyond adjectives like "Sweet" "Beautiful" "Lovely" to describe her voice. Of course, it is all that. But the same can apply to the other singers mentioned above. The very fact that we are pulling out songs out of the grab-bag of nostalgia - mostly from the 70s and 80s in this thread - means that these songs (and the singer) have affected us more significantly...something more than "sweet."
I think it would be great to hear why people in this discussion think Vani Jairam's voice appeals to them? What are the reasons? After all, Suseela and Janaki were also part of that period and had many moving songs. Why are we here - in this thread - listing Vani Jairam's solo? What could it be about her rendition and voice that makes her a topic of such a debate. In other words: HOW does the voice of VJ AFFECT us, the way Suseela's and Janaki's does not?
This, of course, assumes that participants in this thread aren't having similar discussions/and lists about other singers going on in other sites/threads.
Pardon me if I am being naive.
Thanks,
Naaz

Well Naaz, I am not a south Indian, as I have said earlier. However I have been fairly exposed to the music of the 4 southern states, though not as much as u have been.
I grew up listening to Lataji's songs and Ashaji's songs. Lata's sweetness is part of my life everyday.
However at the same time I do listen to greats like Vani Jairam, S Janaki and P Susheela. For classical numbers, I dont think that Janaki or Susheela were less sought after than Vani. I have enjoyed EVERY song in Shankarabharanam inclusive of Janaki's Samajavaragamana.
I dont think SJ or PS,Lata or Asha LACK anything as compared to VJ, or vice versa. They are just different voices. All of them had sound training in music and were devoted to their music.
Someone mentioned on another thread - where a Janaki vs Asha "fight" is going on, that comparing singers in the same league is like asking "who is a better scientist - CV Raman or Ramanujan, Chandrashekhar or H. Khurana?". I love this analogy. The contribution of each has been stupendous.
In the north, Lataji and Ashaji have sung a plethora of classical songs, ghazals and bhajans, qawwalis and thumris, with many composers who had a proclivity towards classical music, and with classical ustaads as well (ravi shankar included). Even PS has an album with Balamauralkrishna - correct? I have heard its simply great. PS too has sung numerous songs for Maestro KV Mahadevan and G Ramanathan, right?
And I have forgotten to mention Chitra whose light Carnatic renditions have given me much plesure.BTW Yesterday, I just managed to listen to a singer called Uma Ramanan. The song is "Poonkadhave". I have fallen in love with her voice.

Another lovely VJ solo - "naadhamenum koviliye" from ??? tuned superbly by MSV.
Its amazing to see so many classical scores in South Indian films in the 80s (a la Sindhubhairavi) and 90s (a la Swathikiranam). Classical music was used very sparingly in Hindi movies after the late 70s, though it was till used in the regional languages in the North.
In Swarnakamalam, VJ has another lovely song "Andilaravamidi padamulada". And in Vaidhehi Kaathirundhaal she has sung a VERY BEAUTIFUL duet with Jayachandran.
Neels, yes I heard Sugam sugam again at a high volume. Indeed the whole room brimmed with VJs voice.
Can u post another link to Karuna Chaiva,Neels? That one doesnt work.

A query for Neel:
Was there a solo by Vani Jairam in Vandichakkaram? I remember the duet: Devi Vandha Neram....something tells me that there was also a solo...am I mistaken? This memory thing is such a messy business!
Naaz i think you are talking about 'aaniver'which has the solo 'muthu muthu therottam ennai mogam thalattum'

The link to "Karuna cheiva" worked before I posted it. I played it several times. Now it does not work for me either.
There is already a compiled list of many of VJ's songs in newtfmpage's database. http://www.newtfmpage.com/my/singer/vj.html
avr,
Neels is another gentleman. I am Neel/NeelD. "Rasikanae arugil vaa" is by S.P.Sailaja. Uma Ramanan is a great singer totally under-utilized.
