The 70s is a special period for me and holds a special place in my heart. Unfortunately it is a period overlooked by many people and we hardly hear songs from this period nowadays.
Whenever, I have the time, I would like to share the lyrics of some of my favourites and have discussions of this period.

The Late 70s marked the period when SPB really took over from TMS as tfm's leading singer. Credit also to maestro for providing outstanding tunes. After listening to old SPB songs, I listened to his more recent renditions such as in Indian, and clearly, one could enjoy his songs better if IR provides the score.
Anyway one song I listen to whenever I feel down is "Raja Enbar Manthiri Enbar" from Bhuvana Oru Kelvikkuri(1978). Can anyone give the context in which it is sung? Who was the female PBS and the lyricist?

This thread is alive and kicking :) Thanks for the support guys..
Prabhu, here are the lyrics for the song from Kavari Maan. The song brings out beautifully the love of a father for his daughter.

"Mullum Malarum" - What a movie ! I would like to include one more song, "Raaman aandalum raavanan aandaalum". The hero has been just fired from his job, he pays a visit to a group of tribals with whom he is chummy, and gets drunk. Then he comes out with this song. The theme of this song is "I might have got fired, but I'm still ok, I'm still the king of my world". Interesting thing to note is the sobering up towards the end when he comes down from "Ask me anything" to "Ask God who can give you anything".
Raaman aandaalum
raavanan aandaalum
enakkoru kavalaiyille
naan thaanda en manasukku raaja

It is nice to read the discussions happening in the discussion forum. Although I have always been a passive visitor, I guess I was tuned in by the topic. I am also a fan of the 70s TFM period, and to me, it was one of the memorable decades giving melodious songs with good lyrics.
As indicated by the other members, that was the period the baton was passed from the old generation to the new (it was new at that point of time) and we could find all of them giving their best. Talking about singers, SPB and KJY started to gain prominence, and even established stars like MGR and Sivaji (although, he was more or less sticking to TMS) started using the new voices and moving away from TMS and PS. Although MGR started initially with SPB in the new generation, he started using more of KJY and ended with using PJ for one of his last song (MMSP). Initially, MGR was using TMS for almost all songs and giving 1-2 songs to SPB and KJY (like USV’s Aval oru… and Thanga thoniyile..; or Idhayakani’s Idhale Idhale…) before trend changed and TMS getting 1-2 songs and KJY getting the whole lot. During the 70s, the fight obviously was between TMS (losing his grip), SPB and KJY, and in that, SPB won. On the female singers, a similar change was observed with SJ and VJ gaining prominence against PS. Although SJ has been there for a long time, the MDs started using he more often.
Just curious – Any idea why MGR and Sivaji differed in their use of TMS in that decade? OR why MSV was using more of SJ and VJ instead of PS? Any titbits…
On the lyricists, there was not a changeover, but many new lyricists joined the talented group headed by Kaviarasar and Vaali. MGR introduced some like Muthulingam and Na Kamarasan, and started to use more of Pulamai Pithan (he came in the end of 60’s with Naan Yaar… of Kudiyuruntha Koil. As an aside, the first woman lyricist “Rosahana Begum” surprisingly wrote about Kunguma pottin mangalam… in that movie, and now, we have Thamarai writing). Although they were brought more for political reasons, as all of them were of his party, the TFM got enriched. They were joined later by GA, a talented but under-rated all rounder, and TR.
On the music scene, MSV was in his best and gave countless hits before meeting his heir, IR, who brought freshness to TFM and started gaining prominence. However as all of us know MSV worked hard to show that he is still the Mellisai Mannar. Who can forget his “Ninaithale Ininkkum” at this point of time.
So, 70s was one of the important periods of TFM, with the old and new generations working to give their best. Although the Avargal song – Kattrukenna Velli… lyrics has been posted, listening to the song takes us to the unlimited joy experienced by a woman after having experienced only sorrow till that time. As we are also talking of the situation in the discussion, Sujatha after having experienced a very bad marriage life with Rajini and having to work to support her child gains emotional support and love from ??? (I an not able to remember the name of the good Malayalam actor). That’s the situation and this must just have been told by KB to MSV and KD, the other creators. What have they come up with? The music, the humming and the lyrics takes us to the mind of the character.
I am happy about the thread and thanks for the entertaining topic.
Regards
Gana

Thanks for the interesting writeup, Gana.
>>Just curious – Any idea why MGR and Sivaji differed in their use of TMS in that decade?
I once read in detail in a cine-magazine about this turmoil of male singers slugging it out in the 70s. Although SPB got to sing a few songs for MGR, there was a personal preference for KJY that was growing in MGR's mind and this led to the very gradual fadeaway of TMS. Although both MGR and MSV agreed that KJY sounded great in love songs, MSV was not so sure about KJY fitting in the propaganda songs tailor-made for MGR. They both had their quarrels over this issue but they also patched it up regularly. That's why in the 70s, we see less of TMS and more of KJY in the love songs, and more of TMS and less of KJY in the propaganda songs. But then the whole thing happened so gradually.
As for Sivaji, in his initial years in TFM he was not quite willing to experiment with new voices. For the film "Thookku thooki", he is said to have preferred CS Jayaraman over TMS, who was then a newcomer. It was a different story that TMS bowled him over with his rendition in that movie, making himself the 'Voice of Sivaji' in the process. Later Sivaji changed his attitude towards new voices for better. In the film "Padithaal mattum podhuma", for the TMS-PBS duet "Ponnondru kanden", he wanted to lip-sync with the PBS part of the song, but his request got turned down. As KJY and SPB came up in the 70s, Sivaji was more than happy to use their voices. In fact, once SPB voiced his apprehension as to whether his voice would suit Sivaji, but it is said that Sivaji personally encouraged SPB to sing for him. KJY also received similar support.
I am not so sure what happened in the women's field, though. Was it just the winds of change or was there something more ?

This song is from "Kizhakke Pogum Rayil". The lyricist is kavignar Muthulingam. PJC has breezed through this song accompanied by a racy tabla beat. I would rate this as one of the difficult songs to put down on paper because of the speed with which it is sung in some places.
