In the crowded bazaar of TFM MDs, I feel Vidhyasagar has carved out a unique style for himself. Starting from Nila Pennae, he has quietly contributed a steady flow of melodies.
His "Malarae Mounamaa" a haunting melody by SPB and SJ brought him some much deserved praise. SPB sings it in every one of his concerts. I would like to know more about his other efforts besides the two or the big hits like Priyam or Karna.

geetha,
thanx for the clarification.i too sincerely wish vidyasagar some really big projects in the future.
even if he does'nt make it big like IR he should atleast wipe out this deva-sirpi gumbal from the TFM scene.

Geetha:
I'm not related to Carnatic at all. When I listened to 'Nee Kaatru' first time, I felt that I have heard this song before. Then, When I listened to 'Malarey Mounama', I felt that they both the same.
I was impressed with 'Malarey mounama' than 'Nee kaatru'. The reason is that the BGM was exceptionally good in 'Malarey Mouna' and spb voice was terrific. But, HH didn't make a good impression on 'Nee Kaatru' like spb did. Take for example, "Oh Vandhathu Penna", HH definitely made impression (IMO) by singing this song.

Viswa: Arasiyal is be Vidhyasagar, the Vaaray En Tholiye being one of his masterpieces.

Enjoy.....
Mano: I'm still curious about the Mutthukalo Kanngal association with Malare and Nee kaatru....I agree totally about the latter two bearing similarities.

Geetha,
Since I started the comparison of these three songs, let me attempt a layman's (absolutely no knowledge of ragams) reasoning for the similarities between "Malarae Mounama" and "Muthukkaloa Kangal".
For instance let's take the two lines whose singing(stresses, stretches of the vowel sounds)and tune sound very similar in both songs:
-"sandhitha vae-aee-layil sindhikka vae-illl-lai thandhuvitt-aeeen ennaiiii"(is this the smoothest TMS has ever gotten?, don't get me started about PS, just a delicate hum by her and I swoon)
-"maar-boooadu kannnn-gal mooo-da vaaa mala-raaee"(If the microphone was inanimate, it would have become a full-blown blushing female after hearing SPB croon in its ear for a few minutes)
Add to this the whisper-like quality of the singing, the very noticable veenai and flute accompaniments in both and you can see why some of us feel the similarities.

nanri, udaya, for opening a thread on VS. He is one of my fav. current md. He is defn different, and has zeal to give new and fresh sounds. I have already collecting almost all of his albums . If you see his filmography, it is no wonder he rarely figures in a blockbuster movies, and it may be the reason, why he could not move into top layer with ARR, IR and deva. He did get his fair
chances after karna, and even ended up scoring for BR in pasum ponn. Some how failure of those films, dragged him down, and now he
slowly getting back to, where he deserves to be.
I tried to list his films so far.
welcome to add the missing ones.
1. nila penna
2. jai hind
3. coimbatore mappile
4. karna
5. villathi villan

hari, have you or anybody else heard Vidyasagar's first Malayalam soundtrack 'Azhakiya Ravanan?' He has done a wonderful job on it. In fact, Sujatha got a state award as best singer for the popular song 'Pranayamani Thooval Pozhiyum...' There is also a classic song on there by Yesudas called 'Venilla Chandanakinnam...' which is one of my all-time favorite songs!!!!
he has also done music for another malayalam movie this summer starring Mamooty and Rambha titled 'Sidhartha.' It is also worth a listen.

Thomas, yes, both songs are very good. I just saw the movie and enjoyed that too. Chitra's song is my favourite in the movie. The tune is superb. The comic scene where the MD in the movie plays this tune to the producer (Mammootty) is very hilarious.

E. Hari, Thomas,
I think VS also scored the music for the S. A. Chandrasekhar film "Seetha", which was released in 1988 or 89. Then, there was a Robert-Rajasekar film (*ing Mahalakshmi) for which he scored the music (1988). Can anyone provide the name of the movie please ?
In Malayalam, he scored the music for the I.V. Sasi directed, Mohanlal-Meena starrer (I think the name of the movie is "VarNa pakittu"). The songs were very melodious indeed.

VS also scored the music for the film "Kizhakke oru kAdhal pAttu" (1991 release - ECHO recording).

Hi VIDHYASAGAR
YOUR MUSIC IS VERY NICE

on: Mon Sep 28 01:32:47 EDT 1998
Hi all, This is Ram, and let me give some of my inputs as well.
VS's great asset is his melody as well as his fast speed hits.
Melodies like Malarae mounama, Paadu paadu bharatha panbadu, Nee katru, Oru thaedhi paarthal, etc.
FYI, Malarae mounama and Nee katru are both based on Darbari Kanada Ragam; hence they are similar. Even MSV's 'Chinnanchiriya vanna paravai' is based on the same ragam.
Fast hits like Vennilave vennilava, Dilruba Dilruba, Yae Shaba, Coimbatore mappilaiku, Oh Naan yennanu solluvaen, Thamara poovukkum all make you dance.

Mano,
I saw the cassette day-before-yesterday in a famous cassette shop in Bangalore. I was really surprised that ECHO had brought out a non-IR film album when I saw that the MD was VS. But then, the year was 1991, when there was'nt much love lost between IR and ECHO.

ECHO doesn't exist anymore, It was bought by Oriental Records Inc. I believe, KOK is the last copy rights owned by OR for IR's Music.

I could find time only now to write something about the music (VS) , which is part of my life now.
Whether Vidyasagar is original?.Does he copy?.
Yes, he is. He is known to flick songs from bangra, arabic, to IR, ARR songs. Sometimes, he never leave any doubt about his inspirations. Then What seperates him from other mds we have now, ofcourse excluding IR and ARR.
What is so special about vidya sagar?.
First of all, in this ARR era, we should appreciate him for creating his own style. All his songs are very much vidyasagaristic!.
Some of them have excellant beats, some have mesmerising melody, but all of them have that unique sound, which wont fail to hanut you.
His beats are more pronounced than ARR or deva and never seem to be out of tune. His orchestrations are always very crisp, smooth and razy, even his slow melodious song does not lose its raziness. His orchesrations never drag you, where even some of ARRs can.
He may not be as profilic as IR or deva. So far, he may have served us only limited range of music. But he has potential to reach new peaks, and I am just waiting to see it happen.
He may be unlucky in seeing his great songs in films like villathivillan and nethaji go unnoticed. but good things cant hide for long time.
For all the worst things arjun has done for TFM, he can be forgiven for only one reason. He gave us vidyasagar.

Malare Mounama is a classic of Vidya sagar. Balu just proved another gem of a song in his collection. The darbari kaanada flows so freely and effectively sung by Balu and SJ.

Vidyasagar seems to have immense potential in creating haunting melodies. "Nee kAtRu nAn maram" flows freely like a breeze. The interludes are very enthralling. I watched the movie nilave vaa recently and the picturisation is good. The folk dance depiction for the second interlude humming piece will be in my memories for a long time. I saw innocence in the face of folks dancing for the tune/humming shaking their face. I cann't forget such scenes. This is one similar to the face of a innocent girl who feels so much out of the world in the song "Aaj main ooper, Aasman neeche". The expressions were brought out well by Manisha.
Also, HH has been at his best rendering the song. This style seems to suit his voice extremely well.
I look forward to more melodies by VS in the years to come. Good for TFM.
