hi friends!
i had always unconsciously nurtured a rather low opinion about malaysia vasudevan and considered only a few of his numbers as worthy of listening. going thro the number of songs listed in this topic, i realised that i had enjoyed listening to many.
inspite of giving so many melodies and hits, i still feel that Vasu lacked that sruthi alignment which is a pre-requisite. i am sure many mv fans will be enraged by this blanket statement and i entered into this topic by chance. i shall return with more substantiation and specific examples later.
listening to mv esspecially good numbers of raja has always been a mixed experience for me. it is something like a naar stuck in one of those narrow crevices in the mouth. one cannot get it out nor can one remain oblivious to it. mv always gave me that feeling. i could not immerse myself into those songs like i could for songs by balu or yesudas nor could i switch them off from my mind. i have heard him live and he sounds much better than in recording. guess that's one of those unexplained ironies of life. further he does not have a grounding in carnatic music like tms and therefore is quite uncertain in brighas and sangathis. notice this in the netrikan number mappilaiku maman manasu wherein after the phrase "vidhaita vidai muLaithadil labamillai" he lets out a sangathi that is an apology of karahara priya.
MV's voice, diction and manner suited songs with a rural touch much more than songs which involved classicism or urbane settings. i would like to learn more about him from the future postings in this topic

Hello,
Also the following songs are so melodius
1) "Thennangeetrum Thendral Katrum Kai kulukkum Kalamadi..."
2) "Mullai Arumbae Mella thirumbu Enna kurumbu, Needhan Endan Rani, ini nAn THan undan raja Vaa aruhilae..."
this song is from Thanikattu Raja. But somehow it was not shown in the movie. Anybody knows the reason for it.
During the early days like "Koyil mani osai
thannai Seidhadaro...." in kilakkae pohum rayil,
"pani vizum poo nilavil..." and some more, before he started imitating T.M.S. the tone was so nice to listen. After he started imitating him, I rather feel that he started sounding bit odd. But, still I like his original tone.
My thanks to Nithin (@ nc36.pr.mcs.net) for acknowledging my effort to bring out the best efforts and hidden talents of Malaysia Vasudevan.

IR wrote a lyric for a film "idhaya koil", one line goes like this...."uyiril kalandhu paadum poudhu edhuvum paadalae"! Badri, as you say MV might have slight aberrations but his songs stood out because of his venkala-kural and the involvement with which he sang his songs, particularly a song Srinath mentioned "Alli thandha bhoomi..annai allavaa.." TFMla IR+MV koottanikkum thani idam irukku.

dhan,
thanks for your reference to alli thandha bhummi which only reinforces my statement that he is more suited for rural environs.
btw, did you really mean venkala kural? i thought he sounded more like a damp squib. i'll be glad to change my opinion on knowing songs of such nature by mv. incidentally, my benchmark for venkala kural is seerkazhi govindarajan whose ganeer voice held an entire generation in thrall.

Hello,
Is it true that MV has sung quite a lot of songs for Rajni(especially during the days Rajni was becoming famous in 1976 to 1986 or so).
For example,
"Poduvaha En Manasu Thangam Oru Pootiyinnu Vandu vittan Singam",
from Murattukalai.
"Oru Thanga Radhathil oru manjal nilavu.."
from Dharmayutham.
"Pattuvanna Selai Kari Ennai Thottu Vanda Sondakari Oru pennidathil Enna Enna pudumai..."
from 6-il Irundu 60-varai(I am not sure).
"Raja Rani Jhakki Vazvil Enna Bhakki..."
from Netrikan
"Vethalaya Pottendi Sakthi konjam Erudhadi Sakthi konjam Erayilae Puthi Konjam Marudhadi..."
from Billa
"Aasai Nooru Vahai Vazhvil Nooru Suvai Vaa..."

"AAGAAYA GANGAI POONDHEN MALAR THOOVI " from Dharma Yudhham is an outstanding song sung by MV !!
how come nobody mentioned this song
Even "Poovey ilaya poovey" from Kozhi Koovudhu was great. All said and done, there was indeed something missing from MV's voice - perhaps the refinement of the tone.
Forgive me for the comparison - but MV was very much like Mukesh in Hindi - one of the most overrated singers of Indian cinema - singing flatly in most of his songs that too in a voice suited only for Raj Kapoor's 'innocent clownish' character portrayed in most of his movies

What do U guys think of the songs in Mudal Mariyadhai rendered by MV (Adi nee thaana ...) I'm not sure of the first line of the song.

Hi:
I think all songs except 'Anda nilava thaan..' in MM were rendered by MV. IMO he was the ideal choice for Sivaji Ganesan. One reason for this could be the fact that MV used to sing TMS songs in IR's troupe in the early days. And of course as TMS was singing for SG, MV was the ideal replacement in the post TMS era.

My favourite MV song is "Yenna ma kannu..." ! ;-) I just love this song. In fact, it appears as if SPB is paying a compliment to MV when he says "Fantastic Sir !" at the end of the song (where the words "Aamama Kannu Sowkyam dhaan" are supposed to come).

Mr Madhan,
I hope you stop doing such futile and silly comparisons like the genius of pathos Mukesh and the "so called" vengala kural of MV. What do you know about Mukesh? Have you just heard RJ's songs or do you know that Mukesh has sung for Manoj Kumar,Sunil Dutt. According to my knowledge I have not seen Manoj or Sunil act Clownish.
For your reference I would recommend "Golden Collections of Mukesh and Lata" which clearly describes the Music genius's golden voice. Out of the three great Singers of the golden era in the hindi film world Mukesh's voice could exhibit pathos to the core and perfectly so.
I need not explain this here but I felt in future donot compare geniuses with Vengala kural MV.
Thanks

Good or bad, MV always left his imprint in a song. So many of his melodies would have been stellar songs if done by SPB or KJY. This used to be my crib in the early IR days. But certainly there are songs for whom no one else is imaginable--"Aaththu Maettula", "Kuyilae Kuyilae Poonguyilae" and one of my favorites which hasn't been mentioned here, "Kai Vachaalum Vaikkaamap Poanaalum Mallivaasam". I felt it was a fitting revenge on Hindi Film Music fans when ARR used MV for the "Dhilkorae Dhilkorae" humming in "Poo Pookkum Osai". I hope he mispronounced the hell out of Hindi so Hindi Film Fans will know the pain I feel whenever I hear Udit Narayan or Kumar Saanu sing Thamizh.

Udhaya:
Bravo ! b (Thumbs Up !).
Another relatively new song of MV that appears to have been left out of this thread is "Ohhhh, party nalla party thaan" from Idhayam. But I felt he sounded a little 'oldish' in that song.

i do not know whether this song has been mentioned but 'ennangal aanandhame inbangal aayirame' by malaysia vaasudevan from kadal meengal is simply a great tune.i think the song has been set in chalanaatai. in those times it was quite a different song to hear.it was overshadowed by 'thalaatudhe vaanam' from the same film but it still sound fresh even after so many years.

Udhaya:
Alas, your revenge plan seems aborted. The "hilkore hilkore" was nothing but a chorus, and didn't really mean anything. He didn't sing anything else...
And so the wait continues for "A Perfect Murder" in Hindi by a Tamil singer :--)

Bharat, I remember some lines after hilkore hilkore--banguraa hai bangura hai bhoomi ragae thaiyya and another similar sounding line. Are they all meaningless too? Damn.
