"naan petra selvam" always brings with it thoughts of "ninaindhu ninaindhu nenjam urugudhae" for me. Both are in the same class, I guess. While MSV brought out a different style of singing modulating TMS' voice, GR seems to have made TMS go for the gusto.
To truly get a sense of TMS, this song and this phase in his career is crucial. The diction, the passion, the rendering that comes with understanding the language is all sublime here. Only Seerghazhi before and SPB after equalled TMS in involved singing. I have noticed other great voices of our time often providing just lip service to lyrics without imparting the emotion in them. While TMS overstayed his welcome and deserves derision for his post-70s efforts, in his prime he was magnificent.

Song of the Day: enakkoru kaadhali irukkinRaaL from muththaana muththallavO.

- Saravanan writes:
‘enakkoru kAdhali irukkinRAL’ from muththana muththallavO. Sung by MSV & SPB. Lyrics by Vaali. Music by MSV.

Vijayalakshmi Cine Arts’ Muththana Muththallavo- 1976 starred Muthuraman, Jaiganesh, Sujatha (in a dual role), Thengai Srinivasan, Manorama & others. Screenplay & Dialogues by Vaali, and directed by R.Vittal.
The songs, besides the SOTD, were:
Maargazhi paniyil mayangiya nilavil Oorvasi vandhaal- SPB
Paalabishegam seiyyavo unakku thenaabishegam seiyyavo- JC & PS
Punnaimaram onnu thennaimaram onnu- Kovai Soundararajan & BSS
Ithu Selathile kaappu kaacha maamabazham- LRE
I saw the film ages ago on Madras DD, a usual story of mistaken identity, subsequent suspicion, and things falling into place in the end. I think this song was filmed on Thengai (playing a MD), singing along with Jaiganesh (an upcoming singer).
Instances of MSV singing along with SPB are something to cherish and celebrate. ‘Niththam niththam en kannodu’ (Koottu Puzhukkal) was featured earlier as SOTD. Another treasured memory of this festive coalescence is ‘Idhu rajagopura deepam agal vilakkalla’ (Taxi Driver)

Sometime in the late 60s, a singer came out of the recording studio, after singing a song for MSV, and promptly burst into uncontrollable sobs. Frantic enquiries from all quarters elicited no response. Finally she calmed down, and explained that she was feeling miserable, as she could not reproduce the song with the beauty that it had when MSV sang it to her! If PS (for she was the singer!) could feel so depressed after delivering a stunner like ‘Enge neeyo naanum ange unnodu’ (Nenjirukkum Varai), it goes to show her humility, and also the Mellisai Mannar’s greatness.
Though endowed with an arrestingly unusual voice, MSV didn’t exploit adequately its infinite range. Nonetheless the sheer variety in the limited numbers that he sang is something to wonder at— the angst-filled howl of the soul in ‘Vasanthangal varum munne’, the delicious suffering of a lovelorn heart in ‘Sollathaan ninaikiren’, the mystic hue that cloaks ‘Nee illadha idame illai’, the warmth of the compassion that embraces one lovingly in ‘Etharkkum oru kaalam undu’ and again in ‘Yaarukkum vaazhkkai undu’, the soulful raconteur in ‘Neraana nedunchaalai’, the stylish shrug of ‘Kandathai sollugiren’, the brazen bacchanalia that ‘Sambo Siva Sambo’ exults itself in---these are but a few illustrations of the plethora of moods that his songs usher in so fetchingly. And many other MDs like V.Kumar, IR, GA, S.V.Ramanan, Chandrabose, ARR, and recently even SPB have eagerly employed MSV’s voice to enrich some of their memorable creations.
Take the SOTD as a case in point- perhaps MSV was doubly enthused as the lines reflect his philosophy--how convincing he sounds as he sings his lines! And SPB at the other end enjoys himself as usual. Hark at the piano and the violin seamlessly blending with the voices and adding to the allure of this masterpiece.

Writer Vamanan once told me that MSV had expressed to him, a desire to be born again, free of any family attachments, and to keep wandering wherever his legs took him, carrying his harmonium, and singing his song. The man and his music are inseparable.
Another year is born--another list of National Honors have been announced--and MSV has been ignored yet again. It is a scandalous shame to all Tamils that this atrocity is being perpetuated year after year.
But don’t you brood, MSV Sir! The name Manayangathu Subramanian Viswanathan is enshrined in the hearts of millions of Tamils. Generations have fallen under your spell, and generations to come will wonder anew on the timeless magic of your compositions.
Unakenna kuraichal, nee oru raja!

bb/Saravanan, terrific choice. Once again you guys take a song that has been playing in my mind only recently and make it SOTD! "The Master and the Commander" is how I would like to refer to this song as :-) SPB shows why he is in a different league altogether in this song.

Giving awards ,now, to MSV is like holding a candle to the Sun. kaalam kadanthu pona piragu etharkku parisu.. kann ketta pin surya namaskaram?
Geetham avarathu oli osai
Naatham avarathu tamizh ooo ooosai!
what do TMS,PBS,PS,MSV,SPB have in common?
It is the same thing that Udit, Sadhana, Sukhvinder, Shreya have in common.
Tamil is not their mother tongue.
But the difference between the two groups
There in lies the crux :-(

MSV sung songs in SOTD:
- Another MSV/SPB song: niththam niththam en kaNNOdu - http://www.dhool.com/sotd2/231.html
- sollaththaan ninaikkiREn: http://www.dhool.com/sotd2/175.html

MSV ko award dhenekeliya inone kya kiya hai?phir bee Hum iska naam waiting lisht pey dala hai.Jo ladki kerchief pehenke kaanta laga gaana mey naachraheyna inko hum agle saal bharat ratna denekeliye recommendasion diya hai.kya gaana hai!Jai Hind!Mera Bharat Mahan!Garibi hatao!Bekari hatao!(Saala!Madarasi log hamesa bak bak karthey rehtha hai!).
This song is an all time favourite for most of the MSV & SPB fans.I think post-75 MSV completly relied on SPB only, to deliver what he wanted and never once Balu let him down.Tune, singing, interludes ,lyrics- a great song in every sense.

Saravanan,
That was a nice tribute to MSV. And a good song too.
It is really a shame to the entire Tamil community that he has been ignored so long by the Indian Light music world.
Among the songs that he sang, my favorite is 'kandathai sollukirEn...' from 'sila nErankaLil, sila manitharkaL' (?).

A genuine rare gem. When i heard this for the first time, i liked it instantly for the very reason that SPB just gives invigorating touch with his sweet sangathis and his slyly vocals.

No need of award for MSV from those unworthy people. He sits in the golden throne of Thamizh Music Lovers. Every great music director of TFM respects him. This is the biggest gift anyone like to get.
This particular song is a fantastic one in all aspects. The style of MSV's modulation and SPB's modulation are different but perfect for the lyrics. A very good team work.
In the movie, Thengai Srinivasan acted as the Music director and Jai Ganesh as a singer. If I am not wrong, this must be the first movie to have music director in important role. Thengai Srinivasan perfectly (some times overdone) imitates MSV.

Saravanan, dont sweat it. National awards dont mean anything anymore. They lost whatever little credibility they had when Bhavatharini won an award :-) Its enough if MSV is felicitated locally or atleast by the Tamil film industry one of these days.

Song of the Day: Background Music from Pithamagan.
- I saw Pithamagan a while back and managed to record the BGMs. Finally, got around to processing them today.
1. http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/pithamaganbgm1.rm
The start of the movie, when Vikram's mother is in labor pain and slowly walks up to the cemetery.
2. http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/pithamaganbgm2.rm
Vikram growing up in the cemetery. This clip sort of sets up Vikram's character. Note how the BGM itself is spooky and non-intrusive in general.
3. http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/pithamaganbgm3.rm
BGM during the fight at the hotel. Vikram comes out of the sudukaadu; He grabs whatever he can get to eat at a small tea stall and a nasty fight follows.
4. http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/pithamaganbgm4.rm
A bird's eye view of the ganja plantations is shown and this is the BGM that accompanies it.
5. http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/pithamaganbgm5.rm
The villain, the owner of the ganja farm, makes his way into the center of the farm.
6. http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/pithamaganbgm6.rm
Ganja workers transporting sacks of weed, wading through a river to another place. Most reviews and discussions mention this place as the most impressive piece of work by IR in this movie's BGM. This tune was lingering in my mind for quite some time, I was surprised that the BGM doesn't last that long. Short, but very effective.
More tomorrow.

Hi all,
I fully agree that GR brought out the best out of TMS as well as Seerkazhi. The songs sung by this duo under the great MD's direction were all superb efforts. This is not to say that TMS has not sung well after that. The songs were of a different kind that he sung under the batons of VR and KVM, but still magnificent ones
