Hi all,
I had mentioned abt this great song by pattukkottai a few days earlier and I am seeing this song as the SOTD. Great feeling.
As mentioned by Raj the music of mellisai mannargal is simply out of this world. I have read somewhere that Puthayal was the film that skyrocketed the duo to fame. Can any one throw light on this though they have scored music for films earlier. There are great songs in this film, apart from the CSJ-PS duet which is the most famous of them all. There's a great sad song by PS going like this 'aasai kadalai marandu po'
Hope to see this too being featured as SOTD.

bb: I listened to the song. What you have is about half of the song. Is there any reason to shorten it? Or, am I having some problem in playing it?

bb: I t has been a long time. I think it has four stanzas. I used to sing that song when I was an engineering student. The movie was released during my first year. May be, MIO has it. I will try or you can try.

bb: I am listening to the song in MIO. It is a 5 minute song. The tune changes. Quite possible you assumed that the song ended with the first tune.

bb,
Can you delete the increasing number of irrelevant query posts in this thread? I know people get in here through Google searches and post, but we don't have to honor them in this thread do we?
Did PKS really write "Chinna peNNaana poadhilae?" I had been thinking that Kannadhaasan wrote this translation in the same tune for "Que Sara Sara" by Doris Day.

What a lovely number so full of substance. Reminiscent of Shri 420 "Dil ka Haal sune dilwala" sung by Manna De. Shakar Jaikishen earned their recognition decades ago - when will MEllisai Mannargal earn theirs?

Good one, bb(though the selai has been cut short to a dhaavani :)
Pattukkottai’s wonderful lyrics, composed by V-R with deft changes in pace punctuating the flow, and PS carrying it off with ease, make this a memorable song.
I guess Pudhaiyal was the first of the many V-R albums wherein PS was the only female voice (not counting Punniavathi who joins in the ‘Kadirvelukku edhirvelum illai’ therukkoothu)- Besides the SOTD, ‘Vinnodum mugilodum’, ‘Aasai kaathale marandhuppo’. ‘Thangamohana thamaraiye’, ‘Nalla kaalam varuguthu’ (PS sweeps you off with this one- listen to her ‘pazhaya paithiyam padeelinu theliyuthu’) are all songs that proved her caliber in those early years.
Kamal Bros’ Pudhaiyal- 1957 was directed by Krishnan-Panju, and was scripted by M. Karunanidhi. It was a meandering story, about a hidden treasure, with a liberal dose of sham black magic, and usual opportune eavesdropping that conveniently helps unravel many of the twists in the confusing story. However Sivaji, Baliah & Chandrababu helped to sustain the interest. Chandrababu, in particular, was endearing in his essay of the gullible Tukaram (living in Pattukkottai, incidentally!), whose love towards Padmini is not reciprocated. Ironically, he is unwittingly the cause for Padmini falling for Sivaji— Sivaji is the postman who delivers the love letters that Chandrababu keeps dashing off to Padmini, and when Sivaji reads aloud one of those letters to Padmini, she is so spellbound by those romantic lines uttered by Sivaji, that Cupid strikes his arrow!
S.Ramaswami, Pudhaiyal was undoubtedly among V-R’s earliest successes, but they had already earned popularity with their songs for the blockbuster Gulebagavali- 1955.
Raj,‘chinna chinna nadai nadandhu’ is from Kaveriyin Kanavan-1959.

Thanks for 'chinna chinna idai pinni '.
A brief note,not a suyathampattam .
Unlike the few other promad projects I've managed to type up,"pattukkOttaiyaarin pAttukkOttai pAdalgal"gave me an exhilarating experience.
There were many songs that made me hum along and type in more pages than I had intended to.If you can get hold of this dialogue/part song from "Rangoon Radha" it will be an one of kind SOTD,here in TFM.Thesingu Raaja having been a childhood hero, reading this song loud and typing at the same time made me feel good.

Song of the Day: naan peRRa selvam from naan peRRa selvam.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/naanpetra.rm
- Sung by T.M.S. Lyrics by Ka.Mu.Sheriff. G.Ramanathan composed the music for this Sivaji starrer.
- The clip has a short intro by TMS before the song.
- Raagam Jonpuri.
- Manisegaran writes on Ka.Mu.Sheriff:
Ka Mu Sheriff(KMS) is a good poet. You must read the "Ka Mu Sheriff Kavithaikal" to get a glimpse of his depth of poetic ability. He is also a good writer and a literary critic. You must have heard Umaru Pulavars's Seerappuranam. KMS had written a beautiful review of the ten chapters of the seerappuranam. Has also written good novels like Tanjai Ilavarasi, vidhiyai Velluvom, Nalla Manaivi. Had released collection of poems entitled Oli and Amuthakalasam. He was also an editor of a magazine called Saattai. His contribution of songs for cinema had not been that many, yet he did create sufficient impact. He cannot be identified as a samooga paadalaasiriyar or kathal paadalaasiriyar. He has written songs for all occassions.
- Ka.Mu.Sheriff also wrote "vaazhndhaalum Esum thaazhndhaalum Esum" in the same film.

Whoa! What consummate artistry at such a high pitch! GR was the genius who recognised the power of TMS's vocals, and harnessed them to brilliant use. The 50s had TMS singing many such gems for the great GR. bb, thanks particularly for that speech!
Paragon Pics’ Naan Petra Selvam- 1956 starred Sivaji, G.Varalakshmi, M.N.Rajam & others.
Though it was an insipid tearjerker, it remains an important film in Sivaji’s film history, as it was the first time Sivaji was working with APN, who scripted the film.
GR, as usual, came up with a classic score:
Poova maramum pooththathe- TMS & Jikki
Inbam vandhu seruma- TMS & Jikki
Vaazhndhaalum yesum- TMS
Naan petra selvam- TMS
Thirudaathe poi sollathe- A.P.Komala & chorus
Maatha Pitha Guru Deivam-A.P.Komala
I think the lyrics for all the songs were by Ka.Mu.Sheriff, save ’thirudaathe poi solladhe’, which was written by K.P.Kamkshisundaram. And Kaayal Mustafa Sheriff has, by his works in this film, ensured that his name will be forever spoken of with reverence. What sheer poetry does one perceive in the rapturous hopes that ‘poova maramum pooththathe’ portrays, in the cynical statement that ‘vaazhdhaalum yesum thaazhndhaalum yesum makes, in the insecure uncertainties that ‘inbam vandhu seruma’ reflects, in the simple strength of faith, and childhood lessons that ‘matha pitha guru deivam’ avers--unfortunate that he wasn’t as prolific as other contemporary lyricists. But films like NPS & Town Bus stand adequate testimony of his skill.

Wow, that was a gem of a song. More than that, I loved to hear TMS speaking.
I remember a familiar incident in the AIR studios when we used to perform. For choosing the announcers of our programs, they would ask us to say the seven days of the week. The names of the days itself have most of the subtle sounds of Tamil language, and my mother-tongue not being Tamil, I never got through it. But TMS, being a non-tamilian as well, is a master of spoken Tamil as we can hear in that speech itself. He knew by instinct the correct emphasis of each Tamil letter, I must say. (His 'Muthai tharu...' is a phenomenal song). I have loved seeing his 'Pattinathar' to hear him sing and speak his dialogues as well. He sounds boasting whenever he speaks but there is so much of truth in what he says : that he had to know what he was singing before he did that. He had an admirable dedication which, as it seems to me, belonged only to his era.
