S-G's Jilu Jilu from veLLiKizhami Viradham almost has a similar start like Beautiful by SG.
Seerkazhi's "Saatai kail kondu" could be one of next week SOTD.A "Koduva mesai aruva paarvai" of those days!
Naaz,There was something personal and that clarifies the indulgence. On Eloquence of Mehta, i still feel there is only atinge of inspiration....the context is the crux.

OISG, your post was well written and quite moving to read. Listening to this song would never be the same again.

Song of the Day: ninaippathu niraivErum from ninaippathu niraivErum.

- Thanks to Mythila for suggesting this song. Sung by Vani Jayaram and M.L.Srikanth.
- M.L.Srikanth composed for a few films, including this one. He was an assistant to MSV. He did music for a few films like Thaalaattu and Thikku theriyaatha kaattil.
- The prelude of this song reminds me of "varappuyara neer uyarum" from aarOdum maNNil indha neerOdum. The interludes hold up the song, fighting Vani Jayaram's shrill voice in the charanams. The lyrics is not great either, with banal lines like "iruvarum sErnthirundhaal anbOdu, indru pOl vaazhndhidalaam paNbodu".
- The film had another VJ song, "ennendru solvEnadi".

A different voice, perfect diction, singing with involvement etc are all great traits of VJ. I can say during 1973-80, she had given marvellous numbers. Today's song is one of my favorite VJ numbers. Vairamuthu said in his early 80's thEnkinnam that VJ' voice is like a peacock singing after tasting honey (mayil thEnail kudiththuy vittu paaduvadhu pola) :-) I could sense such a sweet voice of her in this song....
As in my response to Mhythila's post, the lead pair of this film was Vijayakumar & either of the sisters Rajmallika/Rajkokila. I remember seeing some stills in pesum padam and boomai, the dhaddhy face of Vijayakumar :-) Not very sure of the heroine... can anybody confirm?
The best part of this song is the awesome humming of VJ..!

I like the unusual syntax that hooks the pallavi. Is MLS the guy who does the humming portion in "kaadhal kaadhal endru paesa" from "Uththaravindri Ullae Vaa"?
bb,
Another worthy song for SOTD, but commenting, "fighting Vani Jayaram's shrill voice in the charanams" will get you into the doghouse with many here, I'm sure. Pongal mudinjum paanayaik kinduriyaedaa paavi.

bb, this is a captivating duet, and I feel it is VJ who has greatly enhanced its appeal.
Besides VJ's 'ennendru solvenadi', there were two LRE solos in Thirumoorthi Arts' Ninaipathu Niraiverum- 1976: 'Karumbo karumbu' & 'Naan oru chinnapponnu'. Lyrics by Udumalai A.S.Mani.

BB,
That was a good song. All such songs are so familiar even when you havent heard them for a long time. Probably, that is where their charm is.
By the bye, the prelude strongly reminds me of 'Kora ka kaz tha...' from 'Aradhana'?
And thanks for the 'Rock, Rock...' song and related info. I have it though it is quite some time I listened to it. Any idea as to who the lyricist was ?
"vIdhiyila karnam pOttu Adurathum kalai
mEdaiyila kundhikittu pAdurathum kalai..."
I liked the usage of 'Karnam' and 'kundhikittu', which must have been a shocker at that time. Probably the song was the precursor of a Bhagyaraj song (starring Bhagyaraj - Shobana).
You have also reminded me of another great song : 'rheena meena....'. Has this song featured too in this thread?

Da Vinci: The words 'karnam' and 'kundhikittu' were not shockers. They were commonly used words like 'Thoppukarnam' and ' kuttikarnam' .
'kundhikittu' means squatting and is used for sitting also.

Raj,
That song came in a time when such usages could have been unheard of in a song.
Karnam and kundhu are typical slangs, I believe (Karnam, I am not so sure about). To have used them in a song in a time when language was supposed to be chaste sounded striking to me. And to hear Chandrababu singing those lyrics with his typical gusto speaks volumes about him as well.

Da Vinci: There is a Tamil proverb - 'kundhi thindraal kundrum maalum' which means 'if you sit and eat (without working or earning) even enormous wealth will be destroyed (vanish). It is not slang. It is not uncommon to see chaste Tamil words to be mistaken for slang. A few weeks back somebody thought 'kabodhi' was slang!
In fact, I saw the movie when it was released. There was no fuss about the words in reviews. But there was a lot of criticism about Thanjai Ramaiyahdas writing 'Jollylo Gymkana Dolilo gumkana' or something similar.

Song of the Day: chinna chinna izhai from puthaiyal.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/chinnaizhai.rm
- Following last week's SOTD "summaa kedantha nelaththaik koththi", here is another PattukkOttai song for the weekend. Sung by P.Suseela, Music by MSV/TKR, Lyrics by PattukkOttai Kalyanasundaram. This 1957 film starred Sivaji Ganesan and Padmini (?).
- I noted down the lyrics below:
chinna chinna izhai
pinnip pinni varum
siththirak kaiththari sElaiyadi
namma thennaattil ennaaLum
koNdaadum vElaiyadi
annaiyar thanthaiyar vaNNak kuzhandhaigaL
punnagai mangaiyar pORRip pugazhndhidum
aadaiyadi
seivOmadi
pOdungadi Ohhhh (chinna)
sindhai chirRpigaL dhEsaththarignargaL
senthamizh chOlaiyil pooththa kalaignargaL
mangala maanilam
engaL mangala maanilam
kaakkum maRavar yaavarum
puvi vaazhvai uyarththum anbai ellOrum
vaangi magizhum ponnaadaiyadi (chinna)
It is ironic to see the lyrics of this song at an age when the weavers of TamilNadu are forced to eat rats and scamper for a living. But then, PattukkOttai belonged to another era, with wholly different, marxist outlook.
- I am not sure if PattukkOttai started off the trend of using "chinna chinna" at the start of a pallavi. There are lots of songs that have come since, from "chinna chinna aasai" to "chinna chinna thooRal enna". Incidentally, PattukkOttai wrote "chinnap peNNaana pOthilE" (featured in SOTD earlier), "chinnap payalE chinnap payalE", "chinnan chiru kaN malar sempavaLa vaai malar" and "chinnak kutti naaththunaa".
- This song is a jaw breaker and tough to get the lyrics right. PS has nailed it. Probably her best rustic song.
- Another famous song in this movie is Chidambaram Jayaraman's "viNNOdum mugilOdum".
- PattukkOttai's biography is here: http://www.geocities.com/Paris/Villa/8299/PattuKalyan.html

vinnodum Mugilodum is one of the best of CSJ & PS..
Coming to SOTD it's a Great Song which praises weaving and weavers and how South India is famous for Weaving .. Difficult lyrics sung easily by PS
Music of Mellisai mannargal is awesome!!

This song has been co -opted by who else but co-optex ;-)who used to blare it thro the loud speakers during their discount sales in exhibitions.
OISG indeed!

bb: Good choice! There was another 'Chinna chinna' song before this. It goes like:
Chinna chinna nadai nadandhu sempavala vaai thiranthu
Amma enru nee azhaithaal amutha gnanam pozhiyudhada
I think the movie was 'Mangaiyar Thilakam' with
Sivaji Ganesan and Padmini.
A few corrections to the lyrics:
sinthai sirpigal -> sinthanai sirpigal
anbai ellorum -> makkal ellorum
pugazhndhidum -> punaindhidum

SOTD - This was the first song on Chennai Doordharsan's friday (olliyum - Oliyum) songs (those days) in 1981 - when it was sponsored by Co-optex.

sounds like another candidate for songs with pre-written lyrics. note how the MDs split the pallavi by adding "namma" to fit the chandham
chinna chinna izhai pinnip pinni varum
siththirak kaiththari sElaiyadi - namma
then, they have cleverly stretched the rest of the pallavi to get a beautiful completion.
