Everyone is pretty bored and fed up with arguing on differences of opinions regarding MDs right ? After all typically, what would we TFMers discuss suppose we meet in person ?. Song discussions right ? So here is the thread.
Idea is someone will introduce a song and we all will discuss about the song, period. Limitation is we will automatically move to another song after 5 days of discussion. ie. anyone contributing to the thread after the first set of 5 days will have to come up with a new song!. Also whoever is starting first can state the ending date of five day period.
Some help from Ravi is required for this until some time for people to really start adhering to this.
BTW why 5 days ?? Obviously to keep the thread fresh and alive !!

Hi,
How about this song from the film "Paarvadhi Ennai Paaradi" (MD : IRR, Playback : SPB, SJ)?
"chinna poongkili sollum then mozhi inikkum nannaazhidhu
vanna poongkili vandha or mayil inikkum ponnaazhidhu
solayo... naduchchaalaiyo... thedinaen unaye
kaalayo... andhi maalayo... yenginaen... idhayam... iniyum... saranam"
The opening music and pallavi for the song is so good that will make me say, "IR is unbeatable". Unfortunately, this song was not a big hit. Maybe due to the star cast!!! (BTB, who is the hero and heroine for this movie?)

ok, let us discuss the song proposed by cram, aagaya gangai from dharma yudham. i'll start with a short synopsis of the song:
it is a beautiful duet, by MV and SJ. in those days MV used to sing a lot of rani and i feel that this song is one in which he has done an excellent job.
the song has a madhyamaavathi base, i guess. it starts of with a pretty smooth humming 'pa papa papa....' by SJ, followed by a nice, violin-sitar? piece.
effective usage of violins is a salient feature of this song. the tune of this song is apt for a happy duet. iam left mesmerized by the vioilns in the first interlude.
also SJ's humming is the second interlude is also too good. the violins that come after that have a slight melancholic touch but raja soon reverts the song back to the happy mood.

In my rating, 'AgAya gangai' always stood on top! I liked this song from day 1 (one of the few songs appealed to me at first time listening) when i saw the movie approx. 18 years back!(not sure) . I vaguely remember the movie situation where sridevi and Rajni clash (mOdal) in the beginning of the movie('ada pOyyA pOyya ulagam perisu, nee oru podi dappA' , a fun song!) and then later it truns into love. The picturisation was also good (if i remember correctly!) as rajni and sridevi sing this melody. As i have posted many times, SJ's humming inthe beginning reveals the feeling of a girl who is in love and wants to shed her heart completely emotionally. Very well rendered by Malasia vasudevan also. YES, the first interlude is absolutely marvellous work with violins and guitar. The second interlude features SJ's humming again between instruments. You need to be standing in a balcony with this song in the background and a nice cool breeze on an average summer day (not too hot) . You might reach heavenly experience!

Is there a sax in the background when SJ starts the humming in AagayaGangai it is a great mix of instruments? I have not identified the instrument.

rasigar nenjangaLe,
ezhundhiringappa. vitta, thread-ai archiveskku anuppuchchiruveenga polirukku. let me play ratchagan and introduce this all-time classic for discussion:
pon ezhil pooththadhu puthu vaanil
veN pani thoovum nilave nil
en manaththottathu vaNNappaRavai
sendrathu enge sol sol sol
this song must surely rank among the most poetic of duets in TFM. the lyrics are killer (panchu arunachalam, if i am not mistaken), the rendering, esp. PS is simply celestial, the tune..well i can go on, but i want u guys to proffer ur comments, opinions, feelings, etc on this timeless number. as for mew, i can only say that this song is one of the few that make me cry (aanandhakkanneerammmaaaa!!), every time i hear it.

Cram,
Thanks for discussing this song. As you had said, it is one of the many best old songs that I have heard. Which film is the song from? I think Kannadasan is the lyricist for the above song and Panchu Arunachalam was only the assistant of Kannadasan at that time.

Shanmugam:
the lyricist was panchu arunachalam all right.the movie is kalangarai viLakkam. MD is MSV and sung by TMS & PS.
the song goes as follows:
TMS: sivakaami....sivakaami....
PS: oh oh ...
TMS: ponnezhil pUthadhu pudhu vAnil
veNpani thUvum nilavE nil
en manath thOttaththu vaNNap paRavai
senRadhu engE sol sol sol....
the song involves some different usage also..for example the usage of "thennai vanam" in the first charanam.
thennai vanaththinil unnai mugam thottu
eNNaththaich chonnavan vAdugirEn
eNNaththaich chonnavan vAdugirEn
un iru kaN pattu puN patta nenjathil (note the good usage of vallinams here)
un pattu kaip padap pAdugirEn
(pon)
TMS really tries to be meticulous in his pronounciation at the end of the charanam. the lines of the next charanam are also good.
munnam en uLLaththil mukkani chakkarai
aLLik koduththa pon mAdam engE
aLLik koduththa pon mAdam engE
kiNNam nirambida senkanich chARuNNa
pon vaNNa sevvandhi mAlaiyengE
then PS takes over in her wonderful voice:
ponezhil pooththadhu thalaivaa vaa...
...
in the next charanam PS sings
thennavan manRaththil senthamizh kaN kondu
vandhadhu ponvaNdu pAdikkondu
vandhadhu ponvaNdu pAdikkondu
mannavan uLLaththil sondham vandhALenRu
senRadhu pUnthendral Adikkondu
pon..
this charanam sees a distinct change in mood from the earlier part of the song, and PS's voice resonates in this part, making it a wonderful experience.
i guess then these lines follow:
en udal enbadhu un udal enRa pin
ennidam kObam koLLuvadhO (an oft used imagery)
ennidam kObam koLLuvadhO
onRil onRAnapin thannaith thandhAna pin
unnidam nAnenna solluvadhO
pon..
this charanam is nothing much to write home about in its meaning. but the word usage is good and fits the tune well.
