Why does some songs from Dum (Tamil) sound very similar to songs from Idiot (Telugu)????
Why would an indian music director never admit, that he is covering songs from others?
In Dum the MD is Deva, but in Idiot the songs are written by Chakri!
I can remember, that there was huge uproar when Truth Hurts sampled Lata Mageshkars voice, the Md from the original Bappi Lahiri even went to court!
He said it would have been okay, if they just mentioned, who composed the sample!
But in the indian Film soundtrack scene the Md are using tunes from all over the world! If you listen to the tamil soundtracks from the last year, I'm pretty sure that in every second or third album , you will find a song which music is covered, without even mentioning the original, you could at least write inspired by...
They are sampling the music from arabian hits (chandralekha (Malayalam) by vidyasagar), europop music(dhool), hip hop(5 Stars)
Why is this so????
Are all indian MD not creative enough? Or do you have to be a "thief" to become a succesful MD?

And there are 2-3 specific instances of IR taking tunes completely from Hindi movies - maybe upon the insistence of the director. So does that make IR a bad MD? I shall dig those out and present them here.

Hi every one.
I don't have link to them. If you non't accept try to find them and also go and see the TITANIC movie once. The song konjam nilavu in THIRUDA THIRUDA is utter copy of WHO IS IT from MJ's DANGEROUS album. I don't know the link for that .Please try to find that.

Kanavu kaanum [Film: Neengal Kettavai]
Ditto replica of the song 'kasme vaade' from the movie Upkaar. Music by Kalyanji Anandji!
Listen to Kanavu kaanum | Kasme vaade
[i2fs] comments: Its my duty to add that a talk that KA and IR exchanged songs (IR had supposedly 'given' the song 'Ilaya nila' to KA!) has been doing the rounds for quite some time.
02
Theme from Mouna Raagam [Film: Mouna Raagam]
Inspired from the theme of the film Flash Dance by Giorgio Moroder.
Listen to Mouna Raagam BGM | Flash Dance
[i2fs] comments: Inspired! No direct lift but a very beautiful adaptation of the Flash Dance theme. 'Adaptation' would be the best word to describe this. But you sure can find out traces which confirms IR listening to the Flash Dance theme for inspiration.
03
Chittu kuruvi [Film: Chinna Veedu]
Inspired from Antonin Dvorak's Symphony 9 - New World. The actual track is Sym No. 9 in e, Op. 95: Scherzo: Molto Vivace.
Listen to Chittu kuruvi | Antonin Dvorak's Symphony 9 (The beginning of the Tamil song can be distinctly heard in this clip. Make sure you have your speaker volumes in max, it starts with a very low volume)
[i2fs] comments: A exceptionally beautiful case of genuine inspiration. This is how a composer of repute gets inspired for his compositions. This can never ever be called plagiarism. Such instances are really rare and probably more common if we dig deep into Ilayaraja's compositions! Truly, a masterpiece!
04
Kan malargalin [Film: Thaippongal]
Inspired from ABBA's Money money money
[i2fs] comments: Just the beginning of the song.
05
Darling darling darling [Film: Priya]
Inspired from Boney M's number, Sunny
[i2fs] comments: Again, just the beginning.
06
Entha poovilum vaasam [Film: Murattukkaalai]
Inspired from Antonio Ruiz-Pipo's 'Cancione et Danza: 2. Danza'.
Listen to Entha poovilum vaasam undu | Cancion et Danza: 2. Danza
[i2fs] comments: The opening portion is surely inspired. But a typical Ilayaraja-like intricate work!
07
Ada veetukku veetukku [Film: Kizhakku Vaasal]
Inspired from Mozart's 25th symphony, 1st movement.
[i2fs] comments: Good case of inspiration. Surely cannot call it copying. This is the signature tune of Titan watch advts on TV!
08
Poottukkal pottaalum [Film: Chatriyan]
Inspired from the song 'My favorite things' from the all time classic Sound of Music!
[i2fs] comments: Again, good case of inspiration.
09
Theeyani [Film: Nireekshana]
Inspired by The Sound of Music number 'My favorite things'!
Listen to Theeyani | My favorite things
[i2fs] comments: Inspired!
10
Chittukku chella chittukku [Film: Nallavanukku Nallavan]
Possibly inspired by Rimsky-Korsakov's 'The Tale Of The Kalendar Prince', from his 1888 work by name 'Scheherazade'.
Listen to Chittukku chella chittukku | Tale of Kalendar Prince
[i2fs] comments: Given Ilayaraja's love for Western Classical music, it sounds plausible...also taking into account his past inspirations from the likes of Antonin Dvorak! Nikolai Andreevich Rimsky-Korsakov is one of the leading 19th century Russian nationalist composers. 'Scheherazade' was written almost towards the end of Rimsky's career and life...as he put it himself in his memoirs, it "closes a period of my work, at the end of which my orchestration had attained a considerable degree of virtuosity and warm sonority"
11
Kaadhal Vandhiruchu [Film: Kalyanaraman (1979)]
A prominent portion partly inspired by the song 'Lady in Black' by the rock band Uriah Heep!
Listen to Kaadhal Vandhiruchu | Lady in Black
[i2fs] comments: Lady in Black was part of Uriah Heep's 1970 album, 'Salisbury'.

02
En manadhu ondru thaan [Film: Avan oru sarithiram]
Composer: MS Viswanathan
Inspired by Beethoven's Fur Elise!
[i2fs] comments: Yes, inspired!
03
Anubavam pudhumai [Film: Kaadhalikka Neramillai]
Composer: MS Viswanathan
Inspired by the Italian song Besame Mucho!
[i2fs] comments: Yes, inspired! But very well Indianised by MSV!
04
Paartha nyabagam illayo [Film: Pudhiya Paravai]
Composer: MS Viswanathan
Inspired by the song 'Sway with me'! Looking for more details. Posted here is sung by Dean Martin.
Listen to Paartha nyabagam | Sway with me
[i2fs] comments: Inspired!

Dear xml:
Yes, I have seen the Titanic movie. I have heard "Nahi Saamne" as well as the brautiful title song of Titanic. The similarity between the two is less than 0.5% in my opinion. It is definitely not a case of a copy by ARR. And "Nahin Saamne" is a wonderful tune with lilting piano interludes. The rhythm as well as the basic skeleton tune of this song and the title piece of Titanic are totally different. If you want a true case of a lift from the Titanic tune, go to musicindiaonline.com and take the Hindi movie - "raaz". One of the songs in Raaz sung by Kumar Saanu is a 90% lift from the title song of Titanic. Now compare that with "Nahin Saamne". You will understand what I am trying to point out. Please try this little task. And don't misunderstand this message as a flame against YOU. I have nothing personal against you.

Freinds - Even the golden classic by M L Vasanthakumaari - "Konjum Puraave" is a note for note copy of an old and hauntingly sweet Lata Mangeshkar classic "Thhandi Hawayein" composed by S D Burman. Mind you - a note for note, beat for beat copy! Veteran Hindi and Tamil MDs have freely copied from each other or even jointly composed songs at times. Does that make them bad MDs? A music director can seek inspiration from other sources, otherwise the music can even become monotonous. Didn't K V Mahadevan use traditional tunes like "maanasa sancharare" and "brochevarevarura" in his classic Shankarabharanam, making only a few changes? The harmonium interludes of Raveendran's song "harimuraliravam" sung by yesudas are so heavily inspired by traditional Hindustani compositions and bandishes. Does that make Raveendran a copycat?
Copycats have been people like Bhappi lahiri and Annu Malick and Nadeem Shravan who copy tunes in nearly every movie and dont bother making even small changes to the tune. ARR or KVM or IR dont fall into that category.

My answer is IF all the ARR music is from his own he will be able to produce the music even now. New MD's HJ YSR VS etc..entered they did same like ARR. Now ARR could not make any HIT.
It is not matter whoever new MD's enter in to the field. He should be able to produce quality of music if he has own talent.

Let me tell you one thing. We are not aware of all the western albums. Some how we could trace the ARR's copied tunes. Rest all where from ARR copied?. To this answer ARR only knows.

hi xml,
you said
"My answer is IF all the ARR music is from his own he will be able to produce the music even now"
by your theory wont the same question suit IR also...? afterall he has been giving a extraordinary line of flops in the last 10 years.

My answer is people addicted to new trend(western copy). Every one could make like ARR music because it is just copy. Bou no one could make like IR because it is a creation from him.

IR had a very strong classical indian influence, that's what AR doesn't have!
And if you look from this point of view, Ir had a greater range, from which he could copy tunes :-)

Waiting for you to verify your claim of IR lifting '2-3' times from hindi tunes.
(This by a man who refuses to reuse his tunes in remade movies and does so only at directors' request. As as an example he refused 16 vayadhinile in telugu as the telugu producer wanted IR to use the same tunes!) If you can name one hindi MD who has the capacity and speed of IR in giving tunes only then can you say something about him copying. He is much more than a just film MD why do you need to bring him into this thread in the first place?
vinner:
The career phase of IR was THE most creative phase of compositions. Till date there is no MD in Indian FM who has been able to match the number of original and creative compositions he has done.
On a sidenote, even I don't approve of using loops and rhythms, ripping off pieces, if the MD is creative enough let him make his own loops first before using others'.
Most MD's are ignoring composing and focusing on using technology. They are more worried whether their 'sound' will appeal to the masses rather than the music. It's all market driven, with the market being majorly youth. I am sure there are people out there who want to make good music but are not in a position to dictate terms.

You should have a greater range of thinking.
You count the number of movies and songs IR did and list out the copied song.
