Arun,
Can you tell me the beat cycle for 'mistra chappu thalam'? One of my friends is a good Tabla player, and he played and showed me a 11.5 (eleven and a half) beat. amazing!
thanx,
Naveen

Comment,
U need not call that standard IR beat coz 4/4 is used by all the MDs the most.right from MSV , RDB to ARR.
That's the most used beat structure in Indian Music.
U can rarely find different structures in other MDs but with IR it is not the case.
even in 4/4 u can see the variations in the songs from Tic Tic Tic,
Illaya nilas BGMs
Kannan Vandhu paadugiran
one song with drastic change between pallavi and anu pallavi is poomalaiyae thol serava... i dont know the movie.the song starts with the bango beats 4/4 with a fast pallavi and shifts to 4/4 tabla in the anu pallavis.

poomAlaiyE is from pagal nilavu. It also some sort of vocal 'counterpoint'. recording, tabla in IR songs..too fav a topic of mine !! Now..now I've got to get to work..

Arun - This one is just for you,
I appreciate your passion for music, and sometimes you tend to say things beyond your knowledge(of what is true) - and say you have been playing mirudangam..whatever. Please dont misinform people stressing your association with music from the age of 4. Try reading a lot / asking people if you have limited knowledge on things u dunno. Earlier you mentioned anjali anjali has a rock and roll rythm...do u ever think before you claim that what u say is right? Why dont you ask questions before you say something yourself? I am sure that will help you a lot.
(My point is - you need not gain strength by saying you have been playing reggae, mirudangam blah blah blah....just accept if you dunno - simple right?)

Mr. Swamiji
its not for gaining strength.......
i said that coz it was a topic related to the thalam what we were dicussing....
I did ask questions if I dint know.....
U misread my posting and concluded that i was calling anjali anjali a rock and roll ...
i just mentioned the beat was rock and roll type and i did mention clearly that rumbum bum was a pure one of that kind.....
please tell me what was the mis information I gave so far other than what u misunderstood from the posting.
Comment also thought I was discussing Illaya Nila type of songs as Raggae......
when I was actually discussing enaikanavillaiyae types.....
Further y did u mention that u do sequencing kind of things when we were discussing was that to gain strength????
are we fighting to find who is stronger????
I do know my limitations and I dont get into the topics that are outside my scope of my music knowledge....
Please dont post such kind of comments on someone in the public discussions....
Try to mature and act educated!!!!
Dont repeat such postings in future.....

kiru,
yeah, its got a good vocal counter print but u know what this concept was tested bt MSV in andru vandhadhum adhae Nila song........
IR had two voices one running on high pitch and one going on the base equivalent of the same....
Few songs are
April Mayilae,
Va Va manjal Malarae....
Raja Rajadhi Raja.....

Arun,
Dont worry, you will be alone in this thread. You just revealed to junta that you know nothing
Bye bye...
BTW enaikanavillaye is not a reggae...
When u start playing mirudangam from 4, the thaalam wont change.... Truth is a truth whether u started realizing it from the age of 4 or not...
He hehe

Arun, its not counter print, but counter point. Its an art of writing parallel melodies, and both sound independent...Like I said, LEARN FOR HEAVENS SAKE...IF U DUNNO, DONT POST

Arun,
You mean.. 123 1234 (7/8 beat)?
I've heard that this beat is very common in carnatic music (saabu thaalam right?).. correct me if I'm wrong. Sridhar Seetharaman has composed a song in this beat. Nice tune.
Hello Swamiji,
ippa ellaam yaara paathaalum erinji vizhuringa..! kalyaanam aayiricho? ;)

Naveen,
The problem is I have very low tolerance for stupidity. No kalyanam man, I am still swamiji...
Sorry about that... I have seen threads where VERY VERY sensible people discuss...and people dont post if they dunno. Why is that IR and ARR fans have misconceptions and darn stick to their claim that they are right? Is our music written and discussed in some high level intellectual talk? Did you hear that Enai kaanavillaye is a reggae? Now where can I go and publicly say this? HUH!
Jai Ram!

Arun,
Here is Sridhar's mp3 page http://www.mp3.com/sridhar
check for "Why Not (Instrumental)"
In lot of phrases you'll find polytonal arrangement. Looks like Sridhar wanted to achieve some complex task and he has proved that. It is very difficult to find anyone in Tamilnadu doing this kind of orchestration..
When my brother wrote 3rd grade piano exam I remember a piece he played (I guess it is Stravinsky's). It was very interesting. He played E minor with his Left hand and D minor in right hand. It sounded horrible when he was practising. I could not even digest. but later I realized the beauty. My ears got tuned to polytonal arrangement. These pieces sound wonderful only if you play correctly.
We'll talk more about this in "A Request to Amateur Composers who visit this page" thread.
