Hi friends,
This page I believe is devoted to raga based film songs only. Why then there are lot of digressions?Thyagarja kritis and Venkatamakhi nomenclature or sankyai need not find a place here. If that is the case go to classical music pages. Let us discuss songs of MKT, PUC, MS, MLV Papanasam Sivan, G.Ramanathan, S.V.Venkataraman, Thuraiyur Rajagopala Sarma, etc. More creativity is there only in film music, defintely not in classical music. Agree?

Mr. Ragaravaham Sundar,
When did we say that classical music is more creative than film...I have been visiting this thread for abt more than a yr and we have been discussing abt film music only for most of the time...only occasionally we go out of film music...if we get informative news outside film music y shud we neglect that???

:-) Hey Sundar
Just see the title of the thread. "Raga of song please" and not 'raga of film song please'.
Though u r right when u say we can always go to classical music threads for such needs, you shud also understand that this ROS thread has a 'well set peer group (kupps, myself, ram, sundar, sindhuja) with nice mentors (guess who!!), while the threads u mention might have complete strangers, which wud stiffle communication. Let us not create such boundaries, please. What do you think ?
[P.S: Anyway, ain't this getting to be another heck of a digression btw. Lets get on with 'ragas', be it film song or keerthanais :-))]

Hi Vel,
Pl. don't tell me that. See the title once again.
The last line says Raga based film songs database.Okay? Pl confine yourselves to raga based film songs. Do you know a person who has got a collection of more that 2500 raga-based film songs in more than 200 ragas?

tnx.! :-)
this was precisely why i didn't want to post all this in some "concert reviews" thread in the classical music forum in forumhub.
bending rules once a way is fine,I guess!

Sindhuja - pls do not abstain from posting wonderful information just because a few people have rigid preferences - right from the inception of this thread - we have been discussing ragas of film songs and relevant raga information (including a little bit of carnatic music related information) - it is very useful to a lot of ppl - others who do not wish to contribute/read may very well stay away or ignore "irrelevant" postings.

Are there any TFM songs in Bhairavi other than
1. Unnai kaNdu mayangAtha pErgaLundo (MKT-Shivakavi)
2. ThiruppAR kadalil paLLikondAye (Swami Ayyappan)
3. and the last charaNam of Adhisaya rAgam (Apoorva RAgangaL)?
Is it a very difficult raga to handle?

Going by the theory u stated,Hindolam shud be janyam of 8-melakartha Thodi...then y there is a controversy in listing it under Natabairavi or Thodi?

Classical Ilaiyaraaja articles by Lakshminarayanan Srirangam Ramakrishnan:
"Bhairavi is a major 'gana' ragam. It is a sarwaswara bashangam. Thus the aroganam is that of karaharapriya and the avarohanam - nadabhairavi! Hence you could call it as the janyam of either karaharapriya or nadabhairavi. However, since it is more closely related to karaharapriya (sanchara-wise), it might be appropriate to call it a janyam of karaharapriya, with a reduced daivatham in the avarohanam (from Da2 to Da1). The movements of bhairavi have got a very powerful quality to evoke a gloomy mood. It is much worse than subhapanthuvarali (the raga which is oft used in the cinema for sad situations - a very 'light' one when compared to bhairavi).
For a guy who daringly ventures into the bermuda triangle of classical music, that is, the rare vivadhi ragas such as kanakangi, bhaavani etc, it is a kind of surprise why Ilaiyaraaja so far did not bother to touch upon the greatest of all the janya ragas, BHAIRAVI, in atleast one of his songs. Even in his classical music albums like the 'how to name it', I don't remember there is any bhairavi piece. On the contrast, MSV has tried bhairavi twice (as far as I know) in cine-music. Both of them are excellent. They are 'oru puram parthal midhilayin mydhili' (the second charanam in the song 'adhisaya ragam' in the movie aboorva ragam. MSV says that the rest of the song is set in some vague ragam called as mahathi); The second bhairavi that MSV gave was 'thirupaarkadalil pallikondayae' (swamy iyyappan). What a lovely song! What an unbelievable classical presentation of the essence of bhairavi! What a marvelous rendition by K.J.Yesudoss! You have to enjoy this song atom by atom (anu anuvai rasikanum!) There is no doubt that the ultimate classicism in carnatic music lies with few ragas like bhairavi, thodi, sankarabharanam, begada, karaharapriya and kalyani etc. The ascendency in the scale of knowledge and performance of even the classical musicians would be evaluated by the critics according to the mastery and proficiency that they show in handling these ragas. Such is the weightage that a ragam like bhairavi deems from the purely classical people. Ilaiyaraaja miserably failed in this aspect.
There was a wonderful opportunity recently for him to handle bhairavi. That is, in the movie 'moga mull'. The author of that book Thi.Janakiraman, writes pages about this great ragam. In the novel, he actually writes few paragraphs of just bhairavi swaras alone, and about the beauty of those swaras. This he writes in the context when the hero Babu and his friend Rajam sit in the kumbakonam public park and listen to the bhairavi ragam broadcasted in the park radio. Since so much emphasis was given to this ragam in the story, I was lead to believe that the director Gnana might have told Ilaiyaraaja and got a superb bhairavi song. But, alas! There was just a small piece of re-recording in bhairavi alone, that too, bhairavi varnam, when Babu's music master Ranganna teaches music to his disciples. Thats all. "

tnx. to all.Actually,I decided to post all this thinking that I wud gain a lot of info. ABOUT THE RAGAM ITSELF,but today's concert was a li'l boring too.Kharaharapriya by Sanjay Subramanyam. He didn't say NEthing abt. NE of the rAgAs.But the person abt. whom I've told yesterday(the organiser)as usual gave some very interesting info.-kharaharapriya was earlier known as "Harapriya"(as many wud be knowing)meaning liked by Hara or Shiva. It's a very ancient rAgA in the sAmagAnA.Then to assign the no. 22 acc. to the katapayadi formula,"Khara" was added(kha-2,ra-2).
It seems this rAgA and all it's janyas bring out a sense of mangaLam/shAnti/sukha.Also,they have the power of bringing abt. a "parihAram".That is y,one sings madhyamAvati,a janyam of this rAgA in the end; as a parihAram for all the mistakes commited during the course of his/her singing.
1 more thing-the shri rAgA was 1st considered to be the mELakarthA rAgam, later it was changed to kharaharapriyA.
Since Sundar Atre asked for the songs the other day, lemme write them-1)varNam in reethigowLai,2)tApakane in darbAr,3)rAgasudhArasa in AbdOlika,4)dArini telusukonti in Shuddha sAveri,5)yenna punniyam seydenO in huseni,6)nee bhajana gAna in nAyaki,7)rAgam tAnam pallavi in kharaharapriyA,along with kalpanA swaram in the same rAgA,foll. by swarams in kAnadA,sAlakabhairavi,darbAr,shivaranjani,8)nanda tanaya in bhAgeshri,10)kAnavendAmO in sriranajani,11)mangalam in Shri rAgam.
